4 . Zhangye Danxia Landform, also known as Zhangye Danxia Geological Park or Rainbow Mountains, is a fantastic geological wonder located in the province of Gansu, China. It is world-famous for its unique and vibrant rock formations, which display a magnificent range of colors, looking like a vivid palette (调色板) of a painter’s masterpiece.
This extraordinary landscape stretches across an area of approximately 510 square kilometers and is part of the larger Zhangye National Geopark. The Danxia Landform is characterized by its towering cliffs, deep valleys, and steep, multicolored rock formations, which have been shaped by millions of years of geological processes.
The distinct coloring of the rocks is the result of various mineral deposits (沉淀物) that have been exposed through erosion over time. Layers of different colored sandstone and minerals, such as iron and trace minerals, create an amazing visual display of intense reds, oranges, yellows, greens, and blues. The interplay of light and shadows on these majestic formations adds to their surreal beauty, especially during sunrise and sunset.
Zhangye Danxia Landform has gained global recognition and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its awe-inspiring beauty attracts tourists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts from around the world, who come to witness this geological phenomenon and immerse themselves in the wonderful natural surroundings. Beyond its scenic charm, the landform also holds significant scientific value. Geologists and researchers are drawn to the site to study its unique geological formations and solve the mysteries of its creation. It serves as a living laboratory, providing valuable insights into the Earth’s geological history and the forces that shape our planet.

6 . Chinese scientists have successfully transplanted the liver of a gene-edited pig into a brain-dead human subject to imitate treatment for a patient with liver failure, indicating the potential for gene-edited pig livers to replace human livers. It was the world’s first-ever reported case of pig-to-human liver xenotransplantation (异种器官移植).
The successful progress of this research marks a significant breakthrough in the field of xenotransplantation and a crucial step forward for xenogeneic liver transplantation clinical research, providing a theoretical basis and data support for future clinical applications.
The research explored for the first time the probability of xenotransplantation of a genetically edited pig liver into a human body, achieving breakthroughs in originality in terms of scientific theory innovation, core technological challenges, and military medical applications. It will play an irreplaceable role in treatment and repair, functional reconstruction, and transplantation substitution (代替物), especially in vital organ transplantation.
China has nearly 400 million liver disease patients, including over 7 million with cirrhosis (肝硬化), and the number of patients with liver failure is 300,000 to 500,000 every year. In cases of liver failure, liver transplantation is the only effective cure. However, the number of organs donated by humans is far smaller than the demand, so carrying out xenotransplantation research is of great importance and is expected to benefit more patients with end-stage liver disease.
The gene-edited pig used in the liver transplant was provided by Chengdu-based Clonorgan Biotechnology. The researchers used gene-editing technology to remove three pig antigens (抗原) that cause rejection (排斥) and replaced them with three human proteins.
The receiver was a patient with a serious head injury who was proved to be brain dead after three assessments. The family agreed to participate in the scientific research free of charge, contributing to the advancement of medical science. The team led by Dou and Tao has been experimenting with xenotransplantation for 11 years. It had previously completed multiple organ transplants from pigs to monkeys.
1. Why did xenotransplantation mark a significant breakthrough for China?A.It introduced new medicines to prevent organ rejection. |
B.It proved the potential for organs from various animals. |
C.It guaranteed a sufficient supply of pigs for transplants. |
D.It offered a prospect (前景) of replacement organs through gene editing. |
A.Removing pig antigens. |
B.Carrying out scientific research. |
C.Treating for patients with diseases. |
D.Completing multiple organ transplants from pigs to monkeys. |
A.Doubtful. | B.Favourable. | C.Unconcerned. | D.Negative. |
A.The data won’t benefit future clinical applications. |
B.The number of organs donated by humans can meet the demands. |
C.The research is uncertainty to patients with end-stage liver disease. |
D.The breakthrough lies in an experienced team and advanced technologies. |
