1 . You will have an opportunity to meet your new neighbors after you move into the neighborhood. And getting to know your neighbors will help you feel like you're at home and settle into your new space.     1

Careful observation.     2     Note those who seem to have kids» those who are elderly, those who seem to be always in the garden, or even those who only seem to come out at night. If you can find some common interest, this will make it much easier to approach the person.

3     A great way to meet your new neighbors is to spend time outdoors, in your garden or by raking a walk around the block. You'll be surprised how easy it is to meet people when they approach you first. Make sure you spend time outside after work hours or on weekends.

What if you have nothing in common? No problem. There's absolutely nothing wrong with just walking up to the from door, and introducing yourself or inviting them to a small get-together. Let them know you just moved in and where you moved from. If that still feels uncomfortable, then ask about garbage pick-up or recycling centers in the neighborhood. Remember that you live on the same street, in the same neighborhood.     4

Host a get-together. Though it might be the last thing you warn to do while you're still unpacking, hosting a casual get-together is a great way to meet your neighbors all at the same time.     5     Ask people to bring snacks or drinks or chairs or all three. Everyone knows you've just moved in and don't expect much, plus they'll want to help out.

A.Meet neighbors outdoors.
B.Spend more time walking.
C.Check out your neighborhood.
D.If the weather is nice, host it outside.
E.That's enough to start any conversation.
F.If they're interested, they'll say so or even invite you in.
G.The following suggestions do necessarily make it easier to do.

2 . Some people, regardless of what they lack—money, looks, or social connections—always show with energy and confidence. Even the most doubting individuals find themselves attracted with these lovely personalities. These people are the ones you turn to for help, advice, and companionship. You just can’t get enough of them, and they leave you asking yourself, “What do they have that I don’t? What makes them so attractive?”

The difference? Their sense of self-worth comes from within. Attractive people aren’t constantly searching for value, because they’re confident enough to find it in themselves. There are certain habits they pursue every day to keep this healthy view. Since being attractive isn’t the result of dumb luck, it’s time to study the habits of attractive people so that you can use them to your benefit.

Get ready to say “hello” to a new, more attractive you. Attractive people treat everyone with respect. Whether interacting with their biggest shoppers or a server taking their drink order, attractive people are unfailingly polite and respectful. They treat every one with respect because they believe they’re no belief than anyone else.

They follow the golden rule. One person loves public recognition, while another hates being the center of attention. The golden rule is to treat others as they want to be treated. Attractive people are great at reading other people, and they adjust their behaviors and styles to make others fell comfortable.

Bringing it all together, attractive people have simply perfected certain appealing qualities and habits that anyone can adopt as their own. They think about other people more than they think about themselves, and they make other people feel liked, respected, understood and seen. Just remember: the more you focus on others, the more attractive you’ll be.

3 . Engineers at Deakin University have developed a new smart generation schoolbag that will end the days when students end up forgetting their homework, particularly since the smart schoolbag is capable of completing its own morning checklist.

According to a recent press release, the smart schoolbag comes with built-in hardware and software that works to ensure it is packed correctly for each day’s timetable, including lunch and sports equipment.

The bag was designed by Dr Hamid Abdi alongside Masters students at Deakin University. It uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags (标签) to detect items in the bag and Internet of Things (IOT) technology, which extends Internet connectivity to everyday objects. “RFID technology allows any user to detect items in the bag in a contactless way,” Dr Abdi says. The Internet of Things (IOT) technology is employed to check its contents against the daily school plan. Schools or parents can enter data about the activities of each day to the system’s IOT server. The server then links these activities to the RFID tags placed on the items needed. The smart school-bag can tell what items are not required, ensuring that the bag is no heavier than it needs to be.

The smart schoolbag will save a lot of time and stress that occurs when homework, hats or lunches are left home by mistake, especially if that requires parents to quickly race home to collect the missing item.

While the system can be fitted to any schoolbag, the team have designed a sample of the smart schoolbag that includes the smartphone application. Dr Abdi and his team are looking for commercial partners to take the project to the next level.

1. Why do the engineers develop the smart schoolbag?
A.To give a morning call.B.To help homework correcting.
C.To reduce study pressure.D.To remind pupils of school items.
2. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the smart schoolbag?
A.Its application.B.Its working principle.
C.Its advantage.D.Its characteristics.
3. What does Dr Abdi expect of the smart schoolbag?
A.I’ll replace parental duties.B.I’ll ensure academic progress.
C.I’ll reach consumers soon.D.I’ll be environment-friendly.
4. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.A Smart Schoolbag Saves Time and Stress
B.A Smart Schoolbag Will Replace an Ordinary Bag
C.The Latest System of Detecting Missing Items
D.The First Generation of a Smart Schoolbag

4 . Reading is good for more than just entertainment.    1    . And the positive effects can be felt at any age: Even before they’ve fully developed their reading skills, kids can benefit from having access to materials and being read to on a regular basis.

Reading can boost intelligence

People who exhibit strong reading skills early in life grow up to be more intelligent. That was the finding of a study published in 2014 that measured the cognitive development of 1, 890 sets of identical twins. When two twins shared the same genes and home environments, early reading skills appeared to be the factor that decided which twin would be better at both verbal tests (like vocabulary( and non-verbal (like reasoning tests).     2    , the study authors concluded that more emphasis should be placed on teaching strong reading skills to young children.

Reading helps increase empathy

3    — it can make you a kinder person as well. According to a study published in 2013, people who consume literary fiction have an easier time sensing and relating to emotions in other people. This effect likely has something to do with the way such books are written: Great literature forces readers to steps outside themselves and empathize with the characters they’re reading about. Reading can lower stress

Feel stressed at the end of a long day?    4    . A 2009 study found that reading for just 30 minutes has similar stress-reducing effects to doing 30 minutes of yoga.

    5

Even after you put down a book, the effects of reading it are still present in your brain. A 2013 study discovered that when people read books, their brains continue to behave differently hours and even days later. The brains of readers show increased connectivity in the left temporal cortex — the region responsible for language receptivity — even hours after they’ve stopped reading. This suggests that reading can train the mind and boost neural function through a process that’s similar to muscle memory.

A.Reading improves your passion
B.Reading may change your brain
C.Since reading is of significance
D.Reading books doesn’t just make you smarter
E.Opening a book is a good way to wind down
F.Because reading ability is something that’s learned
G.Committing part of every day to reading books can make you smarter, kinder, and more relaxed

It was a Sunday and the heavy storm lasted all night. The morning before the storm, though, was beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea touching the shore gently.

My father realized it was a good day for fishing and invites my sister and me to go with him. I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, and I decided to go all the same. I'm so glad I did.

On the road to the harbor we could see the terribly destruction on the coast, but the harbor itself was in fairly good shape. After all, it protected by the arms of a bay that had only one tiny channel to the sea. As we got on the board, we noticed two big humps(脊背)in the distance.

On approached them, we saw it was a mother whale with his baby. We couldn't believe it—there aren't any whales along the coast here. The storm must have driven them across the ocean into the bay, in that the still water was such badly polluted that nothing could survive.

6 . The Amazon rain forest is on fire. There are more fires burning there than ever before. That's according to Brazil's National Institute for Space Research. Using satellites to track deforestation and wildfires, the agency has counted 74,155 fires in the Amazon this year. That's roughly an 84% increase over last year at this time. The effects of the fires are being felt across Brazil. Parts of the country are covered in smoke. In the state of Sao Paulo, heavy smoke caused the sky to go black and blocked the sun on Monday. Other Brazilian states have declared the situation an emergency. One state has been put on “environmental alert.”

Some people think the policies of Brazil's president, Jair Bolsonaro, have led to the increase in fires. He wants to change laws that protect the Amazon so businesses can clear more land for commercial use. Bolsonaro says the fires are blazing simply because “it is the season of the queimada."(Queimada means "burned" in Portuguese. Portuguese is the official language of Brazil.)

But experts say Bolsonaro is wrong. They don't blame the increase in fires on the season. They point to deforestation and a worldwide increase in temperatures. “Trees, if they're stressed out by heat repeatedly, are more susceptible toother kinds of damage,” such as fires, says Deborah Lawrence. She's an environmental sciences professor at the University of Virginia.

Carlos Nobre is a Brazilian climate scientist. He's also an expert in tropical forests. The situation is “very sad,” according to Nobres. “We usually would see this surge of fire in very, very exceptionally dry years,” he says. “The fact that this record—breaking figure comes out in a relatively un—dry dry season shows that deforestation is increasing.”

1. What is the result of this fire?
A.Many people died in this fire.
B.Most of the states in Brazil feel the effects of the fire.
C.Many trees and animals are destroyed.
D.Brazil declared the situation an emergency.

A.The Amazon rain forest has few fires this year.
B.Some people think the president should take responsibility for the fire.
C.Some experts say the fire is caused because of the season.
D.Carlos Nobre thinks fires should happen in a very exceptionally dry year.
3. What can be inferred from Deborah Lawrence's words?
A.Trees are sensitive to some kinds of damage.
B.Fires are caused because of the season.
C.Deforestation is increasing in the world.
D.Fires happened in exceptionally dry year.
4. What is the main idea of this passage?
A.We should take measures to stop fires.B.What we can do for the fires.
C.Fire happens in The Amazon rain forest.D.Fires cause much damage.

10 . Food waste is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and fruits and vegetables are particularly problematic, as an estimated 52% of harvests go bad before reaching consumers. But one Malaysian company claims to have come up with a simple and effective solution to this problem—a tiny sticker (粘贴标签) that stops fruits spoiling for two weeks.

You’ve probably seen stickers on fruits before, but not like the ones created by Stixfresh. Those common stickers are used only to provide consumers with information about the grower and how the fruit was grown, but Stixfresh has a different purpose. It contains a special, all- natural way that slows down the ripening process, keeping the fruit fresh and juicy for much longer.

Stixfresh are made with 100% organic materials and contain a mixture of ionized (电离) Sodium Chloride and beeswax, which helps slow down the bacterial activity in the fruit, thus delaying the ripening process. The company insists that the stickers are so safe that you can actually eat them.

Stixfresh founder Zhafri Zainudin says that he came up with the idea for the stickers four years ago, after visiting a friend who sold fruit. The man complained about losing money every day due to spoiled fruits, but seemed resigned (顺从的), as he knew there was no way to stop nature taking its course. However, the Malaysian entrepreneur had another idea.

“It got me to thinking. Maybe I couldn’t stop nature, but could I slow it down?” Zainudin writes on his company’s website.

The Malaysian businessman partnered with Selangor University to develop and test his stickers. It took him three years to perfect the manufacturing process and effect of his innovative product.

Originally, Stixfresh stickers were only used to prolong the shelf-life of mangos, but the company later realized that they also worked on other fruits of the same size and with similar texture, like dragon fruit and pears.
