3 . Did you hear about the rose that grew from the concrete? You know the one that shone in the middle of darkness and blossomed in times of misfortune?
It was December of 2000 and my dad had been in a coma (昏迷) for two weeks. Mom only had about $20 left because the rest of the money had been used to pay the hospital bills. She bought twenty bags of bananas with that money and sat on the roadside for eight hours until she sold them all. Since Mom had to sell bananas for a living, I had to stop going to school in order to take care of my four-year-old brother — at the time I was only in the third grade. I was too young to understand the whole situation. I was just glad that I didn’t have to go to school anymore so I could play soccer until mom came home at one in the morning.
A few weeks passed and I started expecting the nights when we would eat dinner together, as a family. Before this misfortune I had always complained about the food, but now I did not have any food and I had no one to complain to. For six months every day was the same: wake up in the morning, stomach hurting from hunger, ask the neighbors for food, feed my brother, play soccer until dark, and stare at the stars until mom got home. The day when dad left hospital was the first day when I came face to face with appreciation, although I was totally unaware of what the feeling was.
Now I’m eighteen years old and I believe that I’m the rose that learned how to grow from the crack in the concrete, the rose that blossomed in the dark when no one was around.

4 . If you had to name just one person on earth who is living his or her best life, David Copperfield would have to be among the finalists.
From his childhood in Metuchen, New Jersey, he has spent his whole life in the world of magic. When Copperfield was 10, he began practicing magic as “Davino the Boy Magician” in his neighborhood. By the age of 16, he was teaching a course in magic at New York University. As a teenager, Copperfield became fascinated with Broadway shows.
But it was hard to turn that interest into a career. Even his mother told him that he couldn’t do it. His father was the one who told him to live the impossible. His father’s dream was to be an actor but he ended up running a clothing store so he hoped that Copperfield could be different.
At first he lived beyond his means. He had his first TV special at 19, moved to California, rented a songwriter’s house and bought big cars. And then all of his hard-earned money disappeared. But it was the best thing in the world that happened, because that fear of losing everything has stuck with him ever since. He learned that it is OK to pursue his dreams, but he has to do it in a thoughtful way.
In his spare time, he often takes part in a program called Project Magic, which teaches magic in hospitals as a form of treatment. It helps patients regain dexterity(敏捷) and gives them new skills. As for donations, he keeps them very quiet as it makes him happier.

7 . Anyone in the world, big or small, fat or thin, black or white, can feel somewhat inferior (自卑的) to someone else at times during their lives.
Stop wanting to be like others. Inferiority is rooted in the desire to be just like someone else. If you try to be someone else, you aren’t being true to yourself.
Try not to worry about what others think. Inferiority arises from your constant concern about what others think about you. You often find problems with yourselves based on if others find you good enough. This isn’t healthy thinking.
Build self-confidence. As you work through your inferiority, you need to start building self-confidence. Start by fixing your mental image of yourself. Inferiority is based on false ideas about oneself. Try to remind yourself that this image is false and doesn’t reflect the reality. Remove labels you have attached to yourself. Don’t think of yourself as a stupid, ugly, unsuccessful man, a failure, or anything else.
A.Just don’t try to be someone else. |
B.But you can get inspired by people. |
C.Surround yourself with positive people. |

8 . We all dream of reaching a certain success someday. Because of this we all are afraid of the very same thing- failure. But we should understand that we all have to experience some sort of failure in our lives. It is part of growing up and it is part of life itself. Failure doesn't have to always be seen as something negative. When you get to see failure in a different perspective, you will see that it has the power to help you get to your goal.
Don't be so hard on yourself whenever you make a mistake or fail a task. Everyone makes mistakes. Whenever you face one failure, remember to accept your fault and do something to make things right. Whenever you fail something, you just have to get up and keep trying. You will get to your goal eventually.
Every mistake is a lesson you have to learn from. As the saying goes, “If you do something wrong for the first time, it is a mistake. But if it happens again, then it becomes a choice.” Your mistakes and failure make you wiser.
You should be smart enough to know and avoid the causes that lead you to them once more. No dream or goal is ever easy. With every great success, there are some failures along the way that lead to something great. Don't give up and don't be afraid to make mistakes. It is all part of the game of life.
Life is not a bed of roses. The journey to success will have its ups and downs and have its share of joy and suffering. You will encounter failure once in a while. But pain is part of the learning process. Failures and mistakes are experiences that will make you wiser and stronger as you climb the ladder of success.

9 . National Poetry Month is to bring about awareness and appreciation of poetry. Some of the goals include reading poems, writing poems and helping teachers bring poetry into the classroom. Here are some activities in National Poetry Month.
Recite Poetry to a Pet
We’ve come up with some fun exercises to get you into the spirit of creative expression. You can recite poetry to a pet by changing the sound or speaking loudly and clearly enough to communicate without explanations. Doing this can not only help strengthen public speaking ability but also deepen your understanding of a particular piece.
Become a Romantic
Do you ever notice how beautiful the nature is? There are so many wonderful poems which have been inspired by the seasons, celebrating the beauty of a snowflake or the spring sunshine awakening the plants and animals. Why not become a poet yourself and share the beauty you saw in the nature with others?
Act out a Poem
Many poets find it hard to share their words because what they write about are personal subjects. But not all poetry is about emotions. Poetry is a living force that can be very powerful when it is shown both as a performance and as words on social media.
Poetry by Heart
We take pleasure in reading or hearing something that reflects what is in our minds or in our hearts. We experience relief if it expresses feelings we’ve kept bottled up. Similarly, reciting a poem to yourself or to someone else can be very rewarding. Sometimes it’s easier to say how we feel with someone else’s words than our own, especially if they’re put together beautifully.
