Popularity is the state of being liked, enjoyed or supported by others. Natural, we all desire to win popularity in one way or another. To enjoy popularity, we are supposed to regard the class as our big family and try our best to take active part in all our class activities. We should be responsible for the work and keep team spirit on mind.
To be a popular student, we must show our respect, concern and sympathy for other. As a result, we never hesitated to lend a hand to those in need. We ought to be strict with ourselves in everything we do it at school and make an effort to achieve all-round development, be good not only at our lessons but also at sports, music, painting, social services and so on. In time of success we remain modest, when in time of difficulty we keep strong-minded.
All in all, being a popular student among the classmates and teachers come to those who can overcome their shortcomings but keep improving their personal qualities.

3 . Resealable plastic bags — sometimes called by a brand name, such as Ziploc — are those little clear plastic bags you use to keep your sandwiches and chips fresh. They usually have some sort of sealing mechanism, like a plastic zipper, which allows you to seal the bag to keep air out.
Keeping air away from foods allows them to stay fresh longer.
The history of the resealable plastic bag started in 1951 at a company named Flexigrip, Inc. Flexigrip developed a plastic zipper from patents which were bought from an inventor, Borge Madsen.
Over time, however, plastic zipper bags were developed. Eventually, in 1968, Dow Chemical Company began to market its Ziploc brand of resealable plastic bags to grocery stores. They turned out to be very popular.
Today, these types of bags are available in many different sizes and styles, from snack and sandwich bags to craft and freezer bags.

4 . Understanding where you fall in the American economic class system isn't as simple as pulling out a calculator or looking at a pay stub(存根). Numerous forces shape individuals' economic class and their views on where they rank alongside other Americans. When asked how they identify their social class, 72% of Americans said they belonged to the middle or working classes, according to a 2020 survey from Gallup.
One objective way some researchers divide individuals into economic classes is by looking at their income. From that data, they split earners into different classes such as poor, lower-middle class, middle class, upper-middle class and wealthy. The income cutoffs that divide those income ranges can change from year to year and between methodologies, but here's a sense of where they stand, according to recent data. Another factor that individuals may use to determine class is educational attainment, with people who have postsecondary degrees linking their class placement to those degrees. Your location also has a major impact on how you feel you stack up class-wise. "Making $l20,00 per year is a lot different in small-town Indiana than it is in New York City," says Frank Newport, senior scientist at Gallup. Admittedly, larger economic trends may also impact how people view their class rank. In recent years, economic trends such as high rates of inflation, waves of employee resignations, struggling small businesses and other effects of the coronavirus pandemic have impacted how people view their class rank.
Unfortunately, recent class-related data, which is from 2019,don't take into consideration the economic damage caused by the pandemic, and we won't see the impact until 2022 or later. Whether you're considered middle class depends on more than just your income or the balance of your bank account. And where you fall in the American economic class system may not stay consistent throughout your life, or even from year to year, experts say. For example, a law student may earn a modest amount of $20,000 per year, currently placing her in the low-income class, but her educational attainment and future earnings will most likely push her income and class placement to a higher level down the road.
So where do you place in the American economic class system? You can look at income, education, marital status, location, family history, gut instinct and a host of other factors to find out where you fall. But the bottom line is this: Finding the answer is more complex than just looking at a number.

5 . No. A tiny, yet powerful word. To hear it can make us feel childlike; sheepish or in trouble. How does it make you feel to say “no”?
“We live in a society that does not glorify choosing yourself. It is not honored,” says relationship therapist Nedra Tawwab. “We are constantly living in others’ headspace and not our own heart space. We’re thinking about whether they’ll be angry, or whether setting a boundary will even end the relationship.”
It is normal to care, “but when your life is impacted by not having healthy boundaries for yourself, we need to pay attention”, says Tawwab.
When there is hierarchy of power-such as in the workplace-saying no can feel particularly difficult. But as the border between work and the rest of our lives has become increasingly unclear, it is even more vital. “Research tells us that people who proactively state their boundaries, such as leaving or stopping work on time, taking leave or prioritizing non-work-related activities, are much better at managing their mental health,” says Dr. Jo Yarker, an occupational psychologist.
Do we misuse the word “selfish” when people are clear about their needs? “I think we do, yes,” says Tawwab, “we need to think about what is actually being harmed when we use that word. If I am taking a day off work, that’s not the same as stealing someone’s credit.”
The key is practicing saying “no” or “enough” in conversations like we are learning a new skill. “We can start with little boundaries like: ‘I will call you back,’ if we aren’t ready to speak to someone at that time. With practice, confidence does build. It can become easy,” Tawwab adds.
1. According to Nedra Tawwab, we ________.A.will not be honored if we sound childlike |

9 . Critical reading is active reading. It involves more than just understanding what an author is saying. Critical reading involves questioning and evaluating what the author is saying and forming your own opinions.
● Consider the context of what is written.
You may be reading something that was written by an author from a different cultural context than yours. Or, you may be reading something written some time ago in a different time context than yours. In either case, you must recognize and take into account any differences between your values and attitudes and those represented by the author.
●
Don’t accept what is written at face value. Before accepting what is written, be certain that the author provides sufficient support for any statements made. Look for facts, examples, and statistics that provide support. Also, look to see if the author has integrated the work of authorities.
● Analyze assumptions made by the author.
Assumptions are whatever the author must believe is true in order to make statements.
●
In doing this, be certain that the sources are reliable. For example, Einstein is a reliable source if the author is writing about landmark achievements in physics.
A.Evaluate the sources the author uses. |
B.Question statements made by the author. |
C.Also be certain that the sources are relevant. |
D.Identify any possible prejudice the author has. |
E.Here are the things you should do to be a critical reader. |
F.The reasons why you should be a critical reader are as follows. |
G.In many cases, the author’s assumptions are not directly stated. |
10 . A mysterious killer has been destroying sea stars. Scientists had thought an infection was to blame. A new study does point to bacteria as the killer. But the bacteria appear to make those sea stars unable to breathe, not infect them.
In 2013, a disease known as sea-star wasting broke out off the U.S. Pacific Coast and the sea stars there died in massive numbers. “It is hard to figure out the complex disease,” says Ian Hewson, a marine biologist at Cornell University. First, Hewson and his group found a virus in unhealthy sea stars in 2014, but later studies found no connection between it and sea-star deaths. They then explored other factors, such as differences in water temperature. They also tried exposing the animals to bacteria. But nothing reliably caused the wasting disease.
However, when comparing bacteria living with healthy sea stars with those living with unhealthy animals, the scientists found higher levels of certain types of bacteria around sick sea stars. Some bacteria were copiotrophs, which grow rapidly in areas with lots of nutrients (营养). And some were the bacteria that survive only in environments with little to no oxygen.
To re-create these conditions in the lab, the researchers added nutrients to stimulate bacterial growth in the tubs with sea stars. Sure enough, the animals got sick. When they reduced the oxygen in the water, similarly, it caused wounds in three out of every four sea stars. However, no sea star getting normal oxygen levels got sick. The study shows that copiotrophs are stealing oxygen from the water, causing sea-star wasting. Dying sea stars produce more nutrients, which may help bacteria to grow on nearby animals. “It’s a bit of a snowball effect.” Hewson says.
“The problem may worsen with climate change, because warmer waters can hold less oxygen than colder waters. Bacteria such as copiotrophs also grow rapidly in warm water. But knowing the likely cause could help experts better treat sick sea stars,” Hewson says.
1. What can we learn about sea-star wasting disease?A.Bacteria are connected with the disease. | B.An infection is the cause of the disease. |
C.Higher temperature can help treat the disease. | D.Exposing starfish to bacteria can cure the disease. |
A.They put nutrients into the tubs to help bacteria to grow rapidly. |
B.They reduced the oxygen in the water to see what would happen. |
C.They compared copiotrophs with the bacteria living without oxygen. |
D.They observed the bacteria living with healthy and unhealthy sea stars. |
A.The disease can greatly affect the ocean environment. | B.Dying sea stars can help bacteria to cause more death. |
C.The death of sea stars makes climate change get worse. | D.The effect of sea star wasting is as small as a snowball. |
A.A mysterious virus is causing sea stars unable to breathe |
B.Bacteria are stealing oxygen from water and killing sea stars |
C.Dying sea stars become a big concern for marine biologists |
D.Climate change makes it more difficult for sea stars to survive |
