1 . International Literacy (读写能力) Day, also called World Literacy Day, was set in 1966 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The purpose was to help improve the world’s ability to read and give people better opportunities in life.    1

Kids in some poor communities might have difficulty getting chances to read the books they need to improve their skills and become better readers.    2    . Keep an eye out for books that can be donated.

3 . A dictionary is very useful for the people who are learning English. People will use a dictionary for help when they have difficulty in reading a passage or doing English exercises. You will make more progress if you know how to use a dictionary efficiently (有效地)     1    

Choose a suitable (合适的)dictionary.     2     You can choose a dictionary which is suitable for your English level, needs and interests. For a middle school student in Grade 9, you can choose OXFORD INTERMEDIATE LEANER’SENGLISH-CHINESE DICTIONARY.

Try to guess the meaning of a new word before you use a dictionary. You may have had such an experience when you are reading a passage：there are some new words in it and you have difficulty in understanding the full passage. What will you do in this situation?    3    Learn culture from a dictionary. You don’t just learn a new word’s pronunciation, meaning, part of speech and other usages.     4    

A dictionary is a good friend for learning English. It’ s a waste for you not to use a dictionary in your study. But don’t think the more you use a dictionary, the better result you can get.     5     If you can do as I have told you, I think you will improve your English soon.

4 . It is imporant for you to think about a plan for your gowth.    1    . Don’t worry. All you need is just a rough (粗略的) one. Here is some advice for you.

    2    Understand what you like, what you value and what you want to be. In studying yourself, you check your strength and weakness. Find out what you need to prepare for your dream job.

Secondly, write down your plan. When writing, you can try using Mind Maps (思维导图).     3    And you may find a proper way to work out your plan.

Thirdly, go over your plan with your teachers, parents or friends.     4    . Think carefully about their advice and make some changes to your plan if necessary. Then you can go on with it.

Finally, work hard to realize your dream. For example, if you want to be an English teacher, you should learn more alout Engish culture and practice your listening and speaking from now on.     5    .

We found that only fifteen percent of our students exercise every day.Forty-five percent exercise four to six times a week.Twenty percent exercise only one to three times a week.

We all know that many students often go online,but we were surprised that ninety percent of them use the Internet every day.The other ten percent use it at least three or four times a week.Most students use it for fun and not for homework.

    3     Only two percent of the students watch TV one to three times a week.Thirteen percent watch TV four to six times a week.And eighty-five percent watch TV every day!Although many students like to watch sports,game shows are the most popular.

7 . What Makes a Book a Classic?

People usually confuse “classical” with “classic” when it comes to literature.     1    . A work of classical literature refers only to ancient works, while classic works are great literature throughout the ages. For example, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea has long been believed to be a classic piece of literature. What features do classic books have?

They have artistic quality

    2    . Some literature elements, such as metaphor and poetic language, combine together to form the artistic beauty.

A classic is usually considered to be a representative of the period in which it was written, and it deserves lasting recognition. A classic may look “old” due to pacing and dated language, but you can learn from and be inspired by it even today.

8 . The art of being a good adviser

Think back to the last time you were discussing a problem at work and someone broke in to offer their opinion.     1     Probably not. Every time we rush in to give advice, we are releasing our inner “advice monster”. Sometimes it needs to be stopped, because in our hurry we are likely to give the wrong advice. So try the following steps when you have strong desire to say something.

·Be aware of its coming. The first step toward controlling the “advice monster” is to pay attention to just how quickly it appears.     2     So please think twice before your action.

·    3     Leader as you are, you can’t be the expert in everything. It's stressful to put that pressure on yourself. The answer to the problem is coaching. It involves helping others think out their own solutions to the problems, which means asking questions rather than offering advice only.

·Know something about the art of expressing. If you do decide to go ahead to ask questions or speak out answers, express them in a more acceptable way.     4    

Offering advice in the right way, you can help people acquire smarter solutions.     5     Being a better adviser, you’ll extend your influence and learn from the people who come to you for guidance.

9 . Graffiti is writings, drawings or marks made on walls in public places. In most cases, it is created with paint or spray paint. Sometimes it is just a person’s name or a rude word. Sometimes it is regarded as a public protest. Today, graffiti is often a mixture of writing and pictures, usually signed with a tag, which is a signature unique to an artist or group. Graffiti is now popular all over the world, and even art museums and galleries are collecting the works of street artists. However, there are many controversies over graffiti.     1    , while others see this as a rich form of non-traditional cultural expression.

It is believed that graffiti in its modern form first became popular in the United States in the 1960s. Young adults in cities like New York would use paint in special cans to spray their tag on walls around the city.     2    . Some graffiti murals and paintings were signs marking the territories of city gangs or illegal crime groups.

New Yorkers used to see the graffiti on the walls of poor neighbourhoods and subway trains as something threatening and as an example of urban decay.     3    , the work of vandals seeking to express themselves or even to make a political point. Up to the 1970s, most people hated graffiti, considering it disgusting. It was illegal and punishable by fines.

Later, the image of graffiti and graffiti artists changed a lot and graffiti was no longer only found in the subways and the poor areas of cities.     4    . The popularity of hip-hop music in the late 1980s helped further spread the culture of graffiti, first in the United States and then internationally.

10 . Reading Enlightens Teens

    1     First, they want to entertain readers. They would like to think that their stories will attract their young readers. Second, they also know that they have a moral responsibility to young people, as they recognize that their young readers are in one of the most important stages of life: the change from childhood to adulthood.     2    

Of course, not all books for the young are of a high quality.     3     The writers aim to copy the success of another book, which makes their stories less interesting instead. Sometimes writers are out of touch they actually know less about the world than their readers do. In a world that changes so quickly, keeping up with the times can be really difficult.

The other is with the writers’ “responsibility”. A story that enlightens the reader is welcome, but no one wants to read a book written by someone who thinks that they know better, just because they are an adult and a writer.

One advantage that writers of teens books have is that they have been there themselves: they know what it is like to feel bored with the challenges of schoolwork, or to find it hard to get along with their parents. They use this to their advantage when it comes to making them understand the young.     4    

When choosing books to read, we should wisely pick books from a range of different cultures and times. Some books are funny, while some are serious, or even tragic. This classification exists in all of world literature.     5     The subject matter of these books is the lives of the young, particularly while they struggle to come of age, showing that they deal with problems relating to parents and friends, and the growing awareness of the responsibilities of adult life.
