文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了Joan Molinsky想要成为喜剧明星,并且为了自己的梦想不懈努力的故事。

1 . Like many young women, Joan Molinsky dreamed of a career on stage, entertaining the masses. However, her parents were skeptical; despite their daughter’s success in a number of local talent contests. Eager to see her perform in a club setting, Dr. Molinsky had his comedian-wanna-be daughter booked at the family’s beach club, which is Joan’s first dinner engagement.

Miss Molinsky started her act with a funny song, but the audiences’ attention span lasted only as long as it took the dessert carts to visit their tables. In a matter of no time, the 300 people in attendance had resumed any and all conversations they’d had prior to the pretty’s introduction on stage.

Heartbroken and ignored, Joan grounded her way through and uttered a polite “thank you” at the end of her final song. She burst into the nearby kitchen, teary-eyed with embarrassment. Her parents were also embarrassed and reinforced their belief that Joan had no future in entertainment.

Dr. Molinsky told Joan to give up her dream of comedy and pursue a more realistic career choice. His daughter went ballistic.

“I don’t care what you say!” She screamed at her father. “I do have talent. It’s my life. It’s my choice how I live it.”

The fight eventually resulted in Joan moving out of her family’s home and taking up a temporary work, while pursuing her dreams with a variety of troupes (剧团) and shows. Her dedication eventually led to a job in California as a writer and on-air “bait girl” for Candid Camera (隐蔽摄像机).

Despite her growing role on the show, host Allen Funt never could remember her first name, calling her everything from Jeri to Jeannie to Jackie. It was during her time with Candid Camera that Joan received a call from The Tonight Show, whom she had longed for over a year for a guest shot. They wanted her to appear with Johnny Carson.

Once on stage, Joan and Carson hit it off immediately. In the end, Carson wiped tears of laughter from his eyes and said aloud to his millions of viewers, “God, you’re funny. You’re going to be a star.”

The next day, dozens of appearance offers flooded in from all over the country, putting. Joan on comedy’s A-list. She also resigned from Candid Camera that day, much to the regret of an angry Funt. From that point on, no one would ever misidentify or underestimate Joan Rivers again.

2 . Many people are told that certain activities are out of the question for them, but a new invention proves that where there is a will, there is a way.

Dr. Zacharias Vamvakousis has come up with a creative way to improve the quality of life for countless people through the power of music. His invention is called EyeHarp, which enables individuals to make music using their gaze (注视) instead of their hands.

“EyeHarp is the first musical application that allows people with disabilities to play music with eyes or head movements,” Zacharias explains. “Using an eye tracker, you can make melodies by looking at the notes on the screen.”

EyeHarp uses the same type of digital eye-tracking technology used in some computer games. But instead of using it to aim weapons at digital opponents, EyeHarp uses it to track your eyes as they stay on different musical notes on a colorful circle on your computer screen.

The application allows you to play three to four notes every second. However, users have to be careful not to move their eyes too quickly from one musical note to the next. So, much like any other instrument, playing a tune takes practice and concentration.

Zacharias was inspired to create the magical application after a musician friend was badly hurt in a motorcycle accident. His friend was worried he’d never be able to play his guitar again, so Zacharias decided to find a new way to make music available to him. While his friend didn’t end up needing EyeHarp, Zacharias was on a mission to help others who thought music was forever lost to them. These are people who are so disabled that they don’t have the opportunity to do many things and learning music through EyeHarp gives them happiness, the purpose and the opportunity to play music.

Zacharias agreed, saying that music builds social connections and raises self-esteem. He’s currently training music teachers to use EyeHarp so they can reach even more people with disabilities. This invention has the potential for changing so many lives. Hundreds of people with disabilities have used EyeHarp.

“There wasn’t any instrument they could play. But now, they’re able to make their own music,” says Zacharias. “I hope it will light up the lives of more people like them.”

1. What is EyeHarp?
A.A musical instrument played with disabled minds.
B.A device that helps people play music with their eyes.
C.A musical game using eye-tracking technology.
D.A medical tool for improving ones’eyesight.
2. For what reason did Zacharias create the appliance?
A.His love for music and technology.
B.A need for a new form of musical therapy.
C.A desire to help his musician friend.
D.A sympathy towards people with disabilities.
3. How does EyeHarp work according to the passage?
A.By tracking the movement of players’ hands.
B.By detecting the sound of a music note.
C.By following the stay of the gaze on the screen.
D.By recognizing the face of a disabled user.
4. What can we infer about EyeHarp from the passage?
A.It is very difficult to play.
B.It can be used by anyone easily.
C.It has limited musical notes.
D.It brings hope to many disabled people.

Eradajere Oleita Thinks she may have a partial solution for two of our country’s persistent problems: garbage and poverty. It’s called the Chip Bag Project. The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from. Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Rather than toss (抛,扔) your empty chip bags into the trash, donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless. Chip eaters drop off their empty bags from Doritos, Lay’s, and other favorites at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store, where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them.

After they sanitize the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use padding (填料) and liners from old coats to line the insides. It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag, and each takes around150 to 300 chip bags, depending on whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof, lightweight, and easy to carry around,” Oleita told the Detroit News.

Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and, as of last December, created 110 sleeping bags. Sure, it would be simpler to raise the money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for Oleita, whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a better life—and her fellow volunteers. “We are dedicated to making an impact not only socially, but environmentally,” she says.

And, of course, there’s the symbolism of salvaging (废物利用) bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless. It’s a powerful reminder that environmental injustice and poverty often go hand in hand. As Oleita told hourdetroit.com: “I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues.”

4 . Animals and people have been living together for thousands of years, but the past 100 years have been extraordinary in the amount of change in those relationships. In the last 100 years, people have markedly changed their perceptions (认知), their relationships, and their uses of animals and animal products. Many of these changes have occurred in our lifetimes.

Some of us grew up on farms and had considerable contact with livestock and wildlife. We knew that dairy cows were kept to provide milk and meat. Beef cattle and pigs were slaughtered (屠宰) to provide food, and chickens provided eggs as well as meat. Wildlife, living on the farm or nearby, was often hunted by farm families to provide meat and skins. Even though we understood, or perhaps because we understood the primary role of animals in our lives, we were often in a close relationship that gave us a perspective of our interdependence and the nature of life and death in our ecosystem. Today, less than 1% of families in the US are engaged in raising livestock; few children have seen or experienced the cycle of life and death of livestock or plants; few know first-hand where their milk, cheese, eggs, meat, vegetables and fruit actually come from.

One hundred years ago, nearly all dogs were kept for herding, pulling power, hunting, tracking, or protection and were seldom allowed in the house, almost never in the bedroom. Today most dogs in the US are kept in the house for companionship and only occasionally kept for work. Current studies also show that 60 to 80% of dogs sleep with their owners at night in the bedroom, either in or on the bed. This indicates the closeness of a relationship and is a major change in our attitudes towards treating pets as family. Today the media and most people consider pets as part of their families.

Today we have multinational and multicultural ‘recognition of the mutual benefits of the human-animal bond to health and spirit. Animals offer companionship—someone to talk to who will not criticize. They are living responding beings to touch or hug with emotion. Animals keep us alert and help fulfill our need to nurture and comfort others.

1. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a factor contributing to the changes in people’s attitude towards animals?
A.The decline in the number of farming families.
B.The increased use of technology in animal breeding.
C.The lack of children’s exposure to animal life cycles.
D.The changes in the use of animals in daily lives.
2. According to paragraph 3, what can be learned about dogs?
A.In the past, dogs can be kept as a companion.
B.Dogs are good helpers to hunt for small animals.
C.Dogs can be trained to work as a safety guard.
D.Nowadays dogs are not as helpful as before.
3. Based on the passage, what benefits do animals provide to humans nowadays?
A.Animals provide food and clothing for human beings.
B.Animals offer companionship and emotional support.
C.Animals are primarily used for entertainment purposes.
D.Animals help fulfill human desires for power and control.
4. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A.The Changing Status of human-animal Bond.
B.Hunting for Food: the nature of life and death.
C.The process of domesticating dogs as pets.
D.Livestock farming: a thing of the past.

7 . 阅读下列短文并回答问题。

Jake was a young software developer living in a busy city. Despite his success at work, he felt unsatisfied and often questioned the purpose of his efforts.

One evening, feeling particularly lost, he decided to take a break and visit a small coastal town where his old friend, Sam, lived. Upon arriving, eke was struck by the town’s calmness. Sam greeted him warmly and suggested they take a hike to a nearby lighthouse. The path was tough, but Sam assured Jake that the view from the top was worth it.

As they climbed, Jake voiced his doubts. “Sam, I’ve been working hard, but I feel stuck. What’s the point?” Sam paused and looked at the path ahead. “Life isn’t always easy, Jake. Sometimes it feels like we’re making no progress, but every step counts, even the hard ones.” Their conversation was interrupted when they reached a particularly rocky section. Jake fell, hurting his knee. Frustrated, he almost gave up and suggested turning back. He felt a mix of anger and disappointment, thinking all his effort was for nothing. But Sam extended a hand, helping him to his feet. “Life’s challenges can knock us down, but we learn and grow by facing them.” Finally, after much effort, they reached the lighthouse. The view was amazing—the vast ocean stretched endlessly, with the setting sun casting golden colors over the water. Jake felt a deep sense of peace and accomplishment. Sam turned to him and said, “See this view, Jake? It shows the big picture of life. The tough journey was worth it. Your work is the same—each challenge and effort leads to something greater.” Jake nodded, realizing his struggles had value.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章讲述了积累的重要性。

8 . One of the most beneficial skills you can learn in life is how to consistently put yourself in a good position. But not everyone knows how we can create that foundation. Actually, the position you find yourself in today is the accumulation of the small choices that you’ve been making for years.

If that’s the case, why doesn’t everyone make choices that will put them in a good position in the future? The ordinary choices that guarantee a strong future go unnoticed. Eating a chocolate bar right now won’t make you unhealthy, just as not eating it won’t make you healthy. Saving money today won’t make you rich, just as not saving it won’t make you poor. Reading a chapter of a great book today won’t solve your problems just as not reading it won’t make them worse.

Not doing the obvious things that position you for future success— rarely hurts you right away. The small choices we make on a daily basis either work for us or go against us. Time strengthens what you feed it. On the first day, the difference between the choices that help us and the choices that hurt us isn’t noticeable. But as days turn into weeks, weeks into years, and years into decades, the small choices do create massively different results.

Whenever this idea is brought up, people are quick to object, “But ... I do these things and I don’t get the results I want.” And it’s true; most of us make the right choices most of the time. But “most of the time” isn’t the same as “all of the time”. In the absence of immediate rewards, we can keep up the intensity for a while but most of us fail to last it long. It’s like we’re Sisyphus rolling a large rock up the hill, only to throw our hands halfway in the air due to tiredness and go home. When we showed up the next day, we saw the rock at the bottom of the hill and repeated the work. Not only did this spoil the progress but it made getting started even harder.

When you look below the surface, giant leaps aren’t really giant leaps at all. They’re a series of ordinary choices that finally become obvious. If you look for the magic moment, you’ll miss how ordinary choices become extraordinary.

1. Why do ordinary choices tend to be overlooked according to Paragraph 2?
A.They may harm people’s health.
B.They only produce insignificant success.
C.They fail to give immediate consequences.
D.They are unable to guarantee a strong future.
2. What does the author mainly stress in Paragraph 3?
A.The power of time.
B.The difficulty in achieving success.
C.The necessity of setting clear goals.
D.The importance of thoughtful planning.
3. What may lead to some people’s failure according to Sisyphus’s story?
A.A lack of perseverance.B.Insufficient preparations.
C.Simply blind confidence.D.A shortage of cooperation.
4. What lesson does the text intend to show?
A.No pains, no gains.B.Time heals everything.
C.It’s never too late to act.D.Rome was not built in a day.
5. How is the text developed?
A.In time order.B.In spatial(空间) order.
C.By analyzing data.D.By giving examples.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了一款名为“Zhi An Qi”的智能书包的研发过程及其功能特点。

9 . The moment the alarm goes off in the morning, the battle between children and parents begins. “Pack your bag quickly!” “Have you gathered all your books?” “Hurry up or you will be late!” The sounds of anxiety and impatience keep ringing in our cars. It’s fair to say that being too slow to pack a schoolbag or forgetting books is a common problem for primary and secondary school students. To solve this issue, we invented a smart schoolbag called “Zhi An Qi”, which means “intelligent, reassuring and complete”. It’s equipped with powerful functions.

We wanted to make our schoolbag easy to use. With a click, it can automatically display which books are inside and which ones are missing according to your daily schedule.

To scan several books at a time, we researched available technologies. However, we found that these technologies didn’t meet our needs. Disappointed, we went to a library to explore more options. What the librarian was doing interested us. Using a machine to scan a cart of books, he could see the returned books on the computer right away. After looking through the Internet, we soon discovered what he was using: radio frequency identification (RFTD, 射频识别). This technology provided the solution that could work for our schoolbag. We quickly made a plan and distributed the tasks. Some members began programming with MicroPython, while others created the circuit (电路) using a universal board (通用插件板). With our combined efforts, we designed the basic functions of the smart schoolbag and successfully applied for a patent (专利).

Creating just a model didn’t satisfy us. What we wanted was to turn it into a real product. To this end, we began commercial operations, such as writing a business plan and contacting producers. In the next stage, we will continue to upgrade the scan panel, making it removable and presenting it as a scanning accessory (附件).

“Of course, the process was quite difficult, as it was our first time developing a product,” said one teams member. “But if you stay determined, you will find that all the storms will pass, and eventually all the efforts will bring you victory.”

1. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 1?
A.Stress the importance of being organized.
B.Introduce the topic of a smart schoolbag.
C.Highlight the problem of packing up a schoolbag.
D.Complain about anxiety and impatience from parents.
2. Where did the team get their inspiration according to Paragraph 3?
A.The popular bags.B.The existing AI technology.
C.The librarian’s scanning technology.D.The roar of anxiety and impatience.
3. What does the author plan to do in the future?
A.Contact manufacturers with a business plan.
B.Apply for a patent and make a more satisfied model.
C.Update the panel into a removable scanning accessory.
D.Improve the panel to make it more advanced and independent.
4. What is probably the author’s attitude toward the development of the new schoolbag?
A.Worried.B.Unconcerned.C.Uncertain.D.Positive.
5. What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Smart SchoolbagB.Efficient Packing
C.The Challenges of InventionD.Technology in Education

10 . We grow up with a mixed message: making mistakes is a necessary learning tool, but we should avoid them. And that’s a real shame. Because when we tell kids that learning is all about the results, we teach them that mistakes are something to be feared and avoided. We stifle (压制) their interest in experimenting because experimenting means you’re going to make a mess and fail. And that’s too big a risk.

Here’s a fascinating experiment that shows how children absorb what we say about effort vs. results. One of professor Carol Dweck’s experiments asked 400 5th graders in New York City schools to take an easy short test, on which almost all performed well. Half the children were praised for “being really smart”. The other half were complimented for “having worked really hard”. Then the students were asked to take a second test and given the option of either choosing one that was pretty simple and that they would do well on, or one that was more challenging, but on which they might make mistakes. Of those students praised for effort, 90 percent chose the harder test. Of those praised for being smart, the majority chose the easy test. Professor Dweck told me: “One thing I’ve learned is that kids are exquisitely (敏锐地) familiar to the real message, and the real message is ‘Be smart’. It’s not’ We love it when you struggle or when you learn and make mistakes.’”

One way we can fix this is by understanding the concepts of “fixed mindsets” and “growth mindsets”. Those with fixed mindsets believe either we’re good at something—whether it’s math or music or baseball—or we’re not. When we have this fixed mindset, mistakes serve no purpose but to highlight failure. Those with growth mindsets are much more likely to be able to accept mistakes because they know that they’re part of learning. And it’s been shown that when kids are taught about growth mindsets, their motivation to learn improves.
