文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述的是人生中有很多的失败,但有时候,只有失败才能给我们带来更好的机会或更大的成功。

1 . “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade (柠檬水).” It is a good saying, but life throws at us more serious problems than lemons, doesn’t it? What do we do when we lose a family member? What do we do when we have been through events that leave us feelings? Can any failure be turned into success?

Most of us realize we can learn one or two things from failure. When we fail, we think, “Well, I won’t try that again! ”or “I won’t trust anyone again! ”But this is not useful learning. It is suggested that we ask challenging questions. For example, “How could I try that again?” There are a lot we can learn and get from failure if we keep asking good questions on how to do better next time.

Failure or pain can be good for developing our character if we choose to face it in a positive way. Our own suffering often makes us understand others better. It can give us wisdom or knowledge to share with others, which can prevent them from similar failure. If we have been hurt by others because of another person’s poor character, it may improve us to be better persons.

Failures can make us experience many things that we didn’t experience before. If you lose your job, it doesn’t mean you lose everything and probably you may get more. As we know, no job often leads to self employment; no job has been the beginning of many highly successful businesses. It is common that we don’t like changing, but change, even unfortunate change, brings new opportunities. Sometimes only failure brings us better opportunities or greater success.

A.any lemons can be made into lemonade

2. The 2nd paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A.We should learn more when we fail
B.We must be careful to trust anyone
C.We must ask questions when we fail

A.avoid hurting others in the same way
B.find a better way to hurt him bravely
C.try to prevent him from hurting others
D.thank him for making you more perfect

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是如何给暴风和飓风命名。

3 . For more than two days in September 1974, the people of Honduras shut their windows, locked their doors, and stayed inside their homes because hurricane (飓风) Fifi was outside. By the time Fifi had left, about 8,000 people were dead. Fifi wasn’t a pet dog as the name suggests. It was one of the worst hurricanes that year.

Hurricanes were first given names so that people could differentiate between different storms (风暴) in the same area. At first, the names were all female (女性) names (like Fifi), but after some protest from Women’s Organisations, both male (男性) and female names were used, alternating (交替) between genders (性别) storm by storm, giving the names out in the alphabetical (字母表的) order. There are six sets of names for storms and hurricanes that are used over six years and then reused. Each year list consists of 21 names, starting with every letter but Q, U, X, Y, and Z. However, the 126 names on the lists are used only for storms forming off the Atlantic coast of the US. There are separate lists for hurricanes that take place in the Pacific.

Max Mayfield is the director of the National Hurricane Centre and it is his responsibility to pick new names for storms off the Atlantic coast. He doesn’t do it alone, though. Hurricane experts from several countries in the Caribbean, Central America, and North America vote on what names will replace the old ones.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了我们应该需要多少锻炼来抵消我们久坐所造成的负面影响,从而鼓励人们多参加锻炼。

9 . We know that spending lots of time sitting down isn’t good for us, but just how much exercise is needed to match the negative health effects of sitting down all day? Research suggests about 30—40 minutes per day of building up a sweat should do it.

Up to 40 minutes of“moderate(温和的)to vigorous(有力的)intensity physical activity” every day is about the right amount to balance out 10 hours of sitting still, the research says—although any amount of exercise or even just standing up helps to some extent.

That’s based on a study published in 2020 analyzing nine previous studies, involving a total of 44, 370 people in four different countries who were wearing some form of fitness tracker. The analysis found the risk of death among those with a more sedentary(久坐的)lifestyle went up as time spent engaging in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity went down. In other words, putting in some reasonably intensive activities—cycling, brisk walking, gardening—can lower your risk of an earlier death.

While analyses like this one always require some detailed dot-joining across separate studies with different volunteers, timescales and conditions, the benefit of this particular piece of research is that it relied on relatively objective data from wearables—not data self-reported by the participants.

The research based on fitness trackers is broadly in line with the 2020 WHO guidelines, which recommend 150—300 mins of moderate intensity or 75—150 mins of vigorous intensity physical activity every week to balance out sedentary behaviour.

Walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift, playing with children and pets, taking part in yoga or dancing, doing household chores, walking, and cycling are all put forward as ways in which people can be more active—and if you can’t manage the 30—40 minutes right away, the researchers say, start off small.

1. How does the author start the text?
A.By telling stories.B.By listing numbers.
C.By giving examples.D.By raising questions.
2. What did the research find?
A.The longer you sit still, the earlier you will die.
B.The more you exercise, the healthier you will be.
C.Productivity can be improved through physical activities.
D.Proper intensive activities help reduce the risk of earlier death.
3. Why is the research reliable?
A.It’s based on previous studies.
B.Its data is relatively objective.
C.It’s carried out in different countries.
D.Its data is from the participants’reports.
4. What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To analyze the risk of sitting still.
B.To recommend a healthy lifestyle.
C.To inspire people to do more exercise.
D.To show benefits of physical activities.
