1 . Interaction is an important part of any course experience. Students who share their ideas with the others are preferred in the class, because this assists other students in the learning and activate their thinking.
If you have a question. or you have something you want to say, don’t just shout it out or direct it at your classmates. Raise your hand and wait to be called on.
Have something specific and brief to say, so you’re not wasting class time. The most appropriate time to raise your hand and speak is when you have a question that other students might have as well. “How do you find the lowest common denominator (分母)?” is an appropriate question in class.
Loud talkers will always stand out, but that doesn’t mean these students are the best partners you could interact with. Look at the quiet and thoughtful kids or sit with someone you don’t normally talk to during the rest to find out if you can get along well with him.

2 . There’s another universe where there are no buildings, trees, cars, cellphones or the Internet. You don’t have to travel a great distance to discover it. At 10 miles offshore, you’re already there. At 100 miles, the effect is complete: Civilization disappears, along with any sign of humanity. It’s the closest to the isolation of outer space. And it is why I’m really into sailing.
I was always more intrigued, though, by wind-driven boats than any relying on engines. As a kid, I was interested by the adventures of Robin Lee Graham, the teenage global traveler. However, it wasn’t until about 20 years ago that I took sailing seriously, and I quickly learned the art of monitoring the sails. I’ve made voyages in fair weather.
Still, I’ve made lots of mistakes. While living in Asia, a friend and I set off across the South China Sea destined for Thailand, only to be stopped by a typhoon that forced us to make landfall in Vietnam. Along the way, however, I also learned the essentials-navigation and maintaining a boat’s system. Years later, my wife and I lived aboard our Symbiosis. We visited many places nearly accessible to reach on a small boat. Far from shore, it’s the responsibility of the crew to keep the water out, the people in, the boat on course and everything working, which adds to the excitement of the voyages.
It appeals to me, so does the company or fellow sailors. But boats are expensive and time-consuming. After returning from the Caribbean, we decided to sell Symbiosis, deciding to sail only other people’s boats, but it wasn’t eight months before we found a good deal on a smaller boat—easier to maintain but still capable of some offshore voyages. I think we’ll name her Talisman.

Paper was first made in China about 2,000 years ago. In Egypt and the West, paper was not very commonly used before the year 1400. Paper was made in southern Europe after about the year 1100. After that, the forestry countries of Canada, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the United States became the most important in paper-making. Today Finland makes the best paper in the world. And it has the biggest paper industry in the world.

Being bullied is a frustrating and painful experience. Online bullying can really hurt others, and it can have serious consequences.
Don’t blame yourself.
Stay away from bullies. Bullies hope you interact with them so that they have an excuse to keep picking on you. When the bully starts orally attacking you, remove yourself from the situation if you can, simply by walking away.

8 . “I hate school, and I’m not going back!” Have you ever had that thought? Lots of kids have had.Usually this feeling doesn’t last long. But what if you feel this way too much?
A kid who feels stressed about school might have headaches or stomachaches. Having trouble sleeping is also a sign of stress. And if you’re not getting enough sleep, you probably feel tired during the day. Feeling tired can make your school day even worse.
Sometimes it’s a problem with your classes and schoolwork. Maybe the work is too easy and you get bored. Or maybe the work is too hard, or you don’t feel as clever as the other kids. Reading may be difficult for you, but you are asked to do a lot of it. You may be getting farther and farther behind, and it may seem that you will never catch up with others. When you know why you don’t like school, you can start taking steps to make things better.
It’s a good idea to talk to someone about your problems at school. Your mom, dad, friends, teachers, or even classmates will be able to help you.
Another good idea is to write down your feeling about school. For instance, keep a diary or just write in a notebook. It’s a great way to let out emotion that may be stuck inside you. And you don’t have to share what you have written with others.
The next time you find yourself disliking school, this will also help you: Make a list of everything you dislike or enjoy—even there is only one thing. See what you can change on “don’t like” list. Could you find a way to show off your special interests and talents on what you like? Which activities could you try that would help you solve these “don’t like” problems? Focus on what you can change and you might be able to put the good feeling back in school!

9 . When I was little, I was really little. But my dream was big. I dreamed of being a basketball player. I tried out for the teams at school, but I was never given a chance.
As I got older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot bigger. On my 12th birthday, I decided to try a new sport: running. I told Grandpa. “I’m going to be an athlete.”
“Dave.” Grandpa began gently, “if you can’t be big, you can do something big.”
I ran 12 miles on my 12th birthday. On my 13th birthday, I did it again, but I added an extra mile. On my 14th birthday, I ran 14 miles. 15 on my 15th, 16 on my 16th, and you guessed it—17 miles on my 17th birthday.
All this running inspired (激发) another big dream. Someday, I’d run the Boston Marathon (波士顿马拉松赛). I told Grandpa about my decision.
“But, Dave, you haven’t trained for the marathon. Are you sure you’re ready?” Grandpa asked. But he still promised to walk over and cheer me on.
I ran fast that day. But I fell at Mile 18 and was driven to the hospital. Later that night, I called Grandpa and told him I failed.
“No,” he said calmly, “you didn’t fail. You discovered something.”
“I did?” I asked.
“Yes, you discovered that big dreams don’t just come true. They take work. If you train and work hard, I promise to wait for you next year and cheer you on.”
I trained every day, running miles and miles. Sadly, just two months into my training, Grandpa died. He wouldn’t be waiting for my second Boston Marathon. I decided I’d run for him.
That day, I ran fast. “Keep going! You can do it!” His words filled my head as I forced my legs to make each painful step. As I crossed the finish line, I threw my arms in the air and cried, “Grandpa, we did it!”

10 . Only two cities in the world are famous for their taxis: London and New York. New York’s taxis are usually yellow. London’s are black. But why black?
Many years ago, when London’s first motor taxis appeared, almost all cars were painted black. This was the age when in America, Henry Ford, who built Ford cars, famously said: “You can have any colour you like, as long as it’s black! ”. In Ford’s time, almost all cars were black. Everywhere!
Things are different today. Cars come in all colours, even London taxis. There are red ones and green ones, ones with pictures on them and ones with advertising all over them, but there are still plenty of “black taxis” too.
London’s traditional taxis are very special cars, and they are different from ordinary cars. They are specially built as taxis, with a section at the front for the driver, and a section at the back for passengers. They have lots of room for luggage, and they can tum 180 in a very small circle (about 8 metres).
However, London taxis are changing fast. Most taxis have diesel(柴油) engines, and they cause pollution.
Since November 2021 London taxis must all meet the Euro-6 emissions(排放)standard. Basically this means that there are no longer any taxis in London built before 2008. Many taxi-drivers are unhappy, because London taxis are built to last for 20 years or more!
Becoming electric will be the biggest change to London’s taxis in over 100 years. More changes are already coming. Before long all London taxis will have to be ZEVs (zero emission vehicles). They will have to run on electricity or on hydrogen (氢气)London’s biggest taxi company, which has 4, 000 taxis, plans to be all electric by 2023.
