文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了学习汉语的重要性、汉语的特点以及学习汉语的困难之处。

1 . Learning Chinese could be one of the most important decisions you ever made. Chinese is becoming the language to learn in the 21st century. With the world’s largest population and a rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine of the world’s economy in the coming years. This will make learning Chinese very important to people in many industries, or to those of us who wish to visit China or learn about its culture and history.

There is an ongoing effort to modernize the writing system and standardize(使标准化) the language. An increasing number of people learning Chinese are learning Mandarin, so unless you absolutely need to learn another dialect (such as Cantonese), be sure to study Mandarin.

For native English speakers Chinese is one of the most difficult and most different languages to learn. The vocabulary is wholly unfamiliar and unlike anything we know. In addition, in the Chinese tone system, words are said in rising or falling tones, which helps to distinguish them. Furthermore, there is the Chinese writing system—a collection of thousands of individual ideograms (表意文字), or symbols, which represent a word or an idea. These ideograms have no phonetic value—that is to say, we can’t tell how the word is pronounced by how it is written. There is a way to present written Chinese in a phonetic script called pinyin. If you are learning Chinese, you'll be working with this pinyin system, but the beauty of the traditional writing system shouldn’t be passed up(放弃). All these factors make learning Chinese difficult for us. Yet, for a determined learner, there’s always a way to overcome them.

1. Why is learning Chinese becoming more and more important?
A.Chinese engines are very welcome.
B.China has the world’s largest population.
C.There are more and more rich people in China.
D.China has become important to the world economy.
2. What can we learn from the text?
A.The author thinks Chinese is as difficult as English.
B.The author is interested in the Chinese language and culture.
C.Foreign languages can play a great role in industrial development.
D.As long as the pinyin system is learned well, one can learn Chinese well.
3. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The difficulties of learning Chinese.
B.The advantages of learning Chinese.
C.The Chinese tone system.
D.The Chinese writing system.
4. What would probably be written following this text?
A.The sources of Chinese characters.

C.The advice on how to learn Chinese.
D.The difficulties of learning other languages.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。短文报道了11岁的聋哑儿童参加乐全国拼写比赛的故事。

2 . Making it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee (a spelling competition) is an amazing achievement for any kid, but for 11-year-old Neil Maes, being born deaf made his journey especially unlikely.

After receiving cochlear implants (人工耳蜗) in both ears as a baby, he had to train his brain to understand spoken words. It took countless hours of speech therapy (疗法).

“We didn’t even know that he’d be able to talk,” said his mother, Christy Maes.

Now the soft-spoken kid from Belton, South Carolina is officially one of the nation’s top young spellers. He earned the right to take the stage in the final rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Neil’s parents have always given him a tip, coaching him to always ask the pronouncer for the meaning of a word, so that he can be sure he heard it correctly. Most contestants do this anyway.

“He’s able to spell very difficult words. You tell him, ‘Spell this word,’ and he’s able to actually imagine what that sounds like in his head and spell the word. It’s actually quite impressive,” said Dr. Michael Hoa, who performed Neil’s cochlear implantation. “There’s a lot that goes into training your brain to do that.”

Neil’s parents didn’t know he was taking part in a spelling bee with his third-grade class until he came home and told them he had won. He made it all the way to his regional (地区的) bee that year, finishing second. Now a naturally shy fifth-grader, Neil is already worn out from the busy bee-week schedule, but he seems happy.

“Our main hope out of all of this was to encourage people that are going to be facing what we had to face,” Christy said.

But Neil said coming to the bee has motivated (激发) him to study even harder, so he can return next year.

“It’s just fun and I want to do it again,” Neil said.

1. What makes it difficult for Neil to enter the competition?
A.He is naturally shy.B.He is unable to talk.
C.He has a hearing disability.D.He is undergoing medical treatment.
2. What does the underlined word “it” (in Para. 5) refer to?
A.The tip from Neil’s parents.B.The coach’s pronunciation.
C.The meaning.D.The word.
3. What did Michael think of Neil?
A.He’s amazing.B.He’s very lucky.
C.He should study harder.D.He should use his imagination.
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.Hard training will finally pay offB.We can do more for disabled children
C.Spelling bees are becoming more popularD.Deaf 11-year-old competes in National Spelling Bee

6 . Although most games have winners and losers, the goal of sports is not to win every game. The real goals include getting exercise, having fun, and learning important social skills, like sportsmanship.

Good sportsmanship is all about respect. Good sports (有体育精神的人) respect their teammates and also their opponents. They respect their coaches, and they also respect the referees or other officials involved in their games.     1     They shout at their teammates and they talk back to coaches or referees.

Kids usually learn sportsmanship good and bad from the adults in their lives.     2     If parents and coaches show disrespect for other fans, referees, or each other, kids will likely act the same way on the field.

3     Some of them are very basic and easy to do, like shaking hands with other players before a game. Other examples may take a little more courage, such as acknowledging a great play made by the opposing team.

Learning good sportsmanship is important because it helps you develop an attitude of graciousness (礼貌) and respect that will carry over into all the other areas of your life.     4     Being a good sport in the classroom will eventually lead to being a good sport in the workplace.

So be a good sport in whatever you do!     5     When others see you acting in a way that makes it clear that winning isn’t the most important thing, you can move on to focusing on the important things, like having fum, getting exercise, and improving your skills!

A.Good sportsmanship can be shown in many ways.
B.However, bad sportsmanship is all about disrespect.
C.Players’ parents and coaches set examples that kids tend to follow.
D.We can be good sports by encouraging others but not laughing at them.
E.Starting as a good sport earlier will help you be a good sport as you get old.
F.If you’re a good sport on the field, you’ll also likely be a good sport in the classroom.
G.The example you set can be a powerful teaching tool for others.

7 . Future football stars

Football academies were set up by leading football clubs so their coaches could run trials to discover and train talented boys from as young as eight as potential players for their first team.

This means that in Britain there are at least 9,000 boys at any one time attending academies after school who think they are going to be a famous footballer.     1     One eight-year-old was selected for Chelsea Academy and he went from being top of his class at school to being the boy who was messing around at the back. His mother asked him why he wasn’t trying hard at school any more. His reply was that he was going to be a footballer and be rich, so he didn’t need to. In the end, he only lasted a year in the academy.     2     And he wasn’t so discouraged that he never played football again.

3     Any sport where only a few can get to the top has many talented failures. These people are very good and do their best but finally it will not pay off because they are just not outstanding enough. In football, this effect is big because the number of players chosen by academies is so huge.     4

This doesn’t put off all the boys who are spotted by the big football clubs and are desperate to join the academies.     5     They get to play as much football as possible. The skills become part of them, as they are with professional players, so they are automatic and the boys don’t have to think about them when they’re on the football field.

A.Unfortunately, for most this isn’t the case.
B.The benefits are still there for them of course.
C.All the big football clubs have a football academy.
D.But, luckily for him, he was still young enough to get over it.
E.But football is not alone when it comes to this kind of thing.
F.Most of these won’t get into a team and most won’t become professionals.
G.And footballers are much more likely to get injured when they play games.

8 . This year’s flu season is shaping up to be a bad one. The new type of flu virus is more severe than most. In addition many people find the vaccine this year to be less effective, and others are wondering if they should still get a flu shot. The answer is yes.

Each summer, scientists try to make a best guess on which variants (变体) are going to be more common in the coming year. They look at data from other countries, and then they make the shot to match.

Sometimes a vaccine doesn’t work well because some variants change too much. That’s why in any year, even when you’re vaccinated, you can get the flu. The shot is about reducing your risk, not getting rid of it.

“Less” and “more” effective are relative terms, so we need to focus more on absolute risks. In 2010, researchers published an in-depth analysis of all flu shot studies. They showed that when a vaccine was considered effective, 1.2% of vaccinated people had the flu, while 3.9% of unvaccinated people had the flu. That’s an absolute risk reduction (ARR) of 2.7 percentage points. In studies in which the flu shot was considered ineffective, 1.1% of vaccinated people had the flu compared with 2.4% of unvaccinated people. The ARR was 1.3% points.

Let’s say this year’s flu vaccine is even worse than we think. Maybe the ARR will be as low as 1 percentage point. That’s still not that bad. Given the millions who are likely to suffer from flu and the thousands of deaths each year, this is a big payoff in public health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that 9 million to 36 million people become ill with the flu each year in the United States. Somewhere between 140,000 and 710,000 of them require hospitalization, and 12,000 to 56,000 die each year.

No vaccine is perfectly protective in any year. But to minimize your chances of illness, yes, you should still get the flu shot this year, and any year.

1. What is the paragraph2 mainly about?
A.Why some vaccines are ineffective.B.Why people should get vaccines.
C.How a new vaccine is developed.D.How people survive flu in summer.
2. What can the ARR tell us according to the text?
A.How dangerous flu could be.
B.The risk of a vaccine.
C.How flu spreads.
D.The effectiveness of a flu vaccine.
3. Why does the author provide the CDC’s figures?
A.To show many people suffer from serious diseases each year.
B.To show flu vaccines are sometimes ineffective.
C.To show flu is a major cause of human death.
D.To show vaccines can still save many people.
4. What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To report a threatening type of flu virus.
B.To persuade people to receive flu vaccines.
C.To explain the spread of flu viruses.
D.To give an introduction to this year’s vaccine.

10 . Only a few people in Toronto have the luck to live within walking distance from their workplace. For the rest of us, commuting (乘车上下班) is a rather unpleasant daily necessity.

So how do you avoid a traffic jam in Toronto? You can do it in the old way and listen to one of the radio stations that give regular updates about the traffic situation in Toronto’s streets.Seeing the big picture of Toronto’s traffic and knowing when and where heavy traffic occurs is a must. From my own experience, there are situations where a quick decision can help you make it in time for an event or a meeting. That’s why we prepared three short videos showing the overall traffic situation in Toronto from dawn to night. You can click them and watch.

With the help of “Google Maps”, where you can watch the live traffic density all over the world and average traffic data based on past conditions, we were able to provide you with traffic maps for a typical (平常的) Friday.
