1 . Did you know that the color of uniforms can influence the performance of an athlete? It may sound strange, but a study suggests this might be true.

Two British scientists studied the results of four sports in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games where the athletes had been given either a red or a blue uniform. They discovered that when there was a big difference in the score, color had no influence on the result. But if it was a close match, the athlete in a red uniform was more likely to win. Then they looked at the uniforms of the soccer teams at the Euro 2004 tournament. Again, teams wearing red won more games.

The two scientists got their idea from earlier studies of wild animals. It had been discovered that when a male show red on its body, it sends a signal of its power and strength. For example, in many kinds of monkey, the more the male shows off its red scars, the more females it can attract.

Based on this fact, the British scientists thought that the idea might work for humans, too. According to them, when an athlete sees a competitor in a red uniform, he gets a feeling that his competitor could be stronger than him. And that kind of feeling may have a bad influence on the player’s performance in the actual game.

Although the idea is Interesting, most people don’t accept that color signals in the animals world can really be useful to humans in sports. They think that it is unreasonable to develop an idea based on such a small number of examples. Much more research has to be done to prove the influence of uniform colors on the performance of athletes.

A.Athletes played equally well in four sports.
B.Game results had a big influence on the athletes.
C.Athletes dressed in red scored more in a close match.
D.There was a big difference in red and blue team’s scores.
2. What may the red scars of a male animal suggest?
A.It is quite strong.B.It is a failure.
C.It has power over other males.D.It has attracted a lot of females.
3. The underlined part “that kind of feeling” in the text refers to a feeling of ________.
A.weaknessB.prideC.dangerD.shame
4. What is most people’s opinion to the scientists’ idea?
A.Interested.B.Satisfied.C.Doubtful.D.Thankful.

2 . Sportsmen in the running races of the Olympics are great athletes, but even the slow runners of the running world — joggers in the park — have good health. A study out this week in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology finds that even 5 to 10 minutes a day of slow running is enough to extend life by several years, compared with not running at all.

The new study focused on a group of more than 55, 000 men and women aged 18 to 100. About a quarter of them were runners. Over 15 years, those who ran just 50 minutes a week or fewer at a slow speed were less likely to die from either cardiovascular (心血管的) disease or other causes, compared with those who didn’t run at all.

The study suggests relatively low efforts are necessary to benefit from jogging, but it can be better to exercise more often. “A little bit is good but a little more is probably better,” says Dr. Aaron Baggish. A 2013 study in Denmark suggested that the secret of maximum longevity is up to 2. 5 hours of running a week.

Although running can make you less likely to have cardiovascular disease, it doesn’t entirely take the risk away from you. “There is no question that the healthier you are and the more exercise you do, the longer you’ll live and the better your quality of life will be,” Dr. Baggish says. “But it doesn’t mean you’ll never get sick.”

“Many long-term runners do not run because they want to live longer,” Dr. Baggish notes. “They run because it makes them feel better every day.”

For these runners, the cost of feeling good can be injuries, so Dr. Baggish supports the value of what he calls “active rest.” His belief, not supported by any recent research, is that it’s a good idea to spend 25% of exercise time over the course of a year running at a slow speed or doing other activities like swimming or biking.

1. What does the new study mainly show us?
A.The best way to run.B.The best time to run.
C.The importance of running.D.The popularity of running.
2. What does Dr. Baggish say about cardiovascular disease?
A.It can result from running often.B.It’s not completely preventable.
C.It’s not so serious as most people think.D.It can be treated by some kind of exercise.
3. What’s Dr. Baggish’s suggestion for someone doing exercise?
A.Staying active all the time.B.Swimming more, run less.
C.Having a big rest after doing sports.D.Taking a little light exercise.
4. In which part of a newspaper can you most probably find this text?
A.Health.B.Business.C.Society.D.Medicine.

4 . Sometimes people come into your life and you know at once that they were sure to be there. They serve some certain purpose, teach you a lesson or help find out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be: your classmate, neighbor, teacher, long-lost friend or even a real stranger. But you know that every moment they will influence your life in some serious way.

Sometimes things happen to you. At the time they may seem terrible, painful and unfair. But later you realize that without overcoming those difficulties, you would have never realized your further ability and advantages. Everything happens for a reason and nothing happens by chance or with good or bad luck.

The people you meet influence your life, and the success and failure you experience create who you are. Even the bad experience can be learned from. In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones.

Enjoy every day even every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can, for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people whom you have never talked to before, and really listen. You should set your goals high, hold your head up, tell yourself you are a great one and believe in yourself.

You can make your life anything you wish. Create your own life and then go out and live it.

5 . I went to the Tsavo National Park in northern Kenya for a film. We set off early for a distant water hole. A huge elephant covered with dry mud, drank calmly and deeply. He might have traveled 50 km to reach the water. He wasn’t going to hurry now. He’d drink a while and rest in the shade, and then drink again or so we thought. What actually happened was that he drank deeply and stepped away. Then he suddenly fell down. Within minutes he was dead.

We called animal doctor Jeremiah Poghon immediately. He removed the head of a poisoned arrow from the elephant’s body, and let out over 100 liters of pus (胺)-the result of the elephant’s meeting with a poacher(偷猎者)months before.

Today's poacher shoots from a blind. He fires an arrow, covered with poison, into the body of an elephant. If the poacher is lucky, the elephant might die in an hour or two; if not, he might have to follow the elephant for days before it dies. Often the arrow head fails to kill the elephant at once-it doesn't mean the poison won't finally kill the ele- phant, but it will be a slow death.

Living in Tsavo through these times, I could see the results of poaching from time to time. When I think about the death of that elephant, what stays with me is the extra- ordinary silence after the shocking sound of his body hitting the ground. I took some comfort from the knowledge that as the dead body returned to the soil, some animals would benefit-but I couldn't escape the feeling that with the death of such a large animal, the world seemed to be a poorer and emptier place.

A.had suffered an hour or two
B.was killed by a poisonous needle
C.had suffered a lot
D.had had a good fight with a poacher
4. How does the author feel when thinking about the elephant s death?

6 . Today, an increasing number of people are always looking at their mobile phones with their heads down. These people are called the “Heads-down Tribe (低头族)”. Are you a heads-down tribe member? Heads-down tribe members now can be seen everywhere.

Another fact is that we can often see people in the restaurant eating face to face but looking at their own mobile phones. It’s strange that they don’t talk to the ones who sit opposite to them during the meal. Some of them even have fun communicating with others on the phone.

7 . Chinese buyers used to prize foreign brands, thinking that products made by American or European companies are of higher quality (质量) than Chinese ones. Increasingly, that’s no longer the case.

Chinese people born before 1985 generally think that foreign brands are better than Chinese ones, billionaire William Li told Business Insider during a recent interview on CCTV 9. But for those who were born after 1985, it is a different picture.

“When I first went to the United Kingdom in 1997, I thought that the difference between China and Europe was quite big,” Li said. “But for those born in the 1990s, when they visit Europe or the US, they do not think there is a big difference.”

The change in thinking among Chinese buyers is showing up in many markets in China where western companies used to control. A study by Credit Suisse published in March found that young Chinese buyers are increasingly showing a “home brand bias”.

More than 90% of young Chinese buyers would prefer to buy home appliance brands, according to the study. Meanwhile, home companies producing food, drinks, or personal care products increased their share of the market by 3.3% over the last ten years to nearly 70%.

“Chinese buyers, especially the younger ones, don’t just believe that foreign brands are better. Right now, Chinese buyers think China is good and ‘Made in China’ is not bad at all,” Charlie Chen, head of China buyer research at Credit Suisse, told South China Morning Post in March.

The Chinese smartphone market is controlled by home companies- Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Apple is the only foreign brand in the top five, but it has lost large ground to the home brands in recent years. Its market share is believed to be down to 37% from a 2015 high of 54%.

1. What is this passage mainly about?
A.The quality of “Made in China”.
B.The change in Chinese buyers’ thinking.
C.Chinese products in the eye of foreigners.
D.The difference between older and younger Chinese buyers.
2. Which of the following is true according to the text?
A.More and more foreigners go to buy Chinese products.
B.Foreign products are more expensive than Chinese ones.

D.Older Chinese people don’t like foreign products any more.
3. Which fact best explains “home brand bias”?
A.Apple had a market share of 54% in 2015.
B.More than 90% of young Chinese buyers prefer home brands.
C.Chinese people born before 1985 think that foreign brands are better.
D.William Li found a big difference between China and Europe in 1997.
4. Who did most of the research for this report?
A.Credit Suisse.

8 . GE Money has recently done a study. It shows that women spend over 8 years of their life shopping. According to the study, women spend about 400 hours each year shopping. Almost a quarter of that time is spent doing some shopping for food.

Luckily, Million Looks magazine says that shopping can be a good thing, and they give some interesting facts about women and shopping. The magazine also says that women who shop more often look and feel much younger than those who dislike shopping. Finally, they say that most women who enjoy shopping are more confident and happier.

9 . Peggy, a nine-year-old border collie (柯利牧羊犬), was signed over to the RSPCA (皇家防止虐待动物协会) after her handler could no longer communicate with her. He thought she could no longer work because she was not able to hear whistles or voice commands.

However, after being handed to the RSPCA, Peggy was taken in by Chloe Shorten, an animal welfare manager from the organization’s mid-Norfolk and north Suffolk branch.

Shorten, 28, and her husband Jason, 34, a shepherd, taught Peggy to understand hand signals and body language. The couple trained Peggy with the help of a sheepdog trainer and their two other working dogs, Sid and Nora.

Shorten said, “We completely fell in love with Peggy almost immediately, and it soon became clear that she wouldn’t be going anywhere. We knew Peggy wanted to be working, so we started the long process of teaching her how to herd and work with a shepherd without relying on voice commands.”

The couple began by training Peggy to look at them to receive hand signals. “We used repetitive and positive reinforcement (加强) and instead of pairing a verbal command with an action we’d use a hand gesture. She reads our hand signals and body language as a way of telling what we’re asking for. For example, thumbs up means ‘good girl’. A flat, outstretched palm means ‘stop’.”

Shorten and her husband point in a certain direction to indicate where they want Peggy to go and pat their knees to summon her back to them. To ask her to slow down, Shorten said she does a waving gesture.

Peggy is not working full-time but enjoys helping out in the fields. “It can be difficult with a deaf dog, because you have to wave at her to get her attention, and sometimes she doesn’t realize straight away,” she said. “But she’s such a happy little dog. She’s no spring chicken, and she is generally retired, but she loves going out to work with us and running around in the fields.”

1. What do we learn about Peggy from the passage?
A.Peggy was transferred from her former owner to RSPCA for her old age.
B.Peggy was trained without the aid of other dogs.
C.Peggy was adopted by the couple shortly after the couple met her.
D.Peggy is full of energy and now is working all day long.
2. How did the couple train Peggy to understand their hand signals and body language?
A.By applying repeated and positive reinforcement.
B.By paring a verbal command with an action.
C.By patting their knees.
D.By doing a waving gesture.
3. What is the meaning of the underlined part in Paragraph 7?
A.not deafB.not youngC.not energeticD.not positive
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Sign language is of importance to training dogs to herd.
B.How RSPCA rescues the abandoned dogs and sends them to some families.
C.How Shorten and Jason teach deaf dogs to herd and work with a shepherd.
D.An elderly deaf sheepdog is now working again after learning sign language.
