文章大意:这是一篇说明文。作者介绍了成为梵蒂冈城周围的瑞士卫队的各种条件。

1 . Imagine getting up each day and going to work back in the sixteenth century. That’s probably what it feels like for the Swiss Guards around the Vatican City, the people who are dressed in the amazing uniforms (制服) from the Renaissance. These people are part of a 500-year-old tradition. All the guards are Swiss and they are there to protect the Vatican and the Pope. They’re the oldest military (军事的) unit that is still active today.

2    They start by learning about the history of the Swiss Guards. At the same time, there is weapons (武器) training. Vatican Swiss Guards have to learn to use old-fashioned weapons such as swords (剑).

3     Guards often have to deal with difficult tourists, so their training includes both Italian and English lessons. Of course, sometimes they might need to use force to deal with a difficult situation.     4

In this day and age, it’s difficult to think of a job where you learn languages, martial arts and how to use a sword.     5    .

B.Those people go through very strict training.
C.They enjoy great popularity in the Vatican City.
D.Therefore, they are trained to protect themselves.
E.Swiss Guards know many key people around the Vatican.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了食物浪费严重的大背景下,越来越多的公司正在用传统上被认为是“废弃物”的食物生产食品和饮料,而消费者因为其环保的理念甚至更喜欢这类产品。

2 . A growing number of companies are making food and drink products out of things traditionally considered waste. And according to new research, consumers increasingly accept — and even prefer — such products.

“Consumers are actually willing to pay more for food made from surplus (剩余的) products,” says Professor Jonathan Deutsch, who led the study. Deutsch and his colleagues presented study participants with different food products. They had one of three labels “conventional”, “organic” or “value-added surplus”. The third was the study’s term for food normally seen as waste. Participants were not, as food companies have long assumed, disgusted by the idea of using “waste” in their food. Instead, they felt positively about the opportunity to help the environment.

The problem of food waste has been getting more attention in recent years. Globally, up to a third of all food is damaged or lost before it can be eaten. Waste can happen anywhere along the food chain. Farms fail to harvest crops due to bad weather. Food goes bad during transport. Companies throw out trimmings too small to use, and supermarkets reject produce for imperfect looks. Restaurants throw out food after its use-by date.

As consumers become increasingly aware of the problem, a number of companies are betting on surplus foods. Washington, D. C-based Misfit Juicery sells cold-pressed juices made from ugly fruits. Dutch company Barstensvol makes heat-and-eat soups from surplus vegetables. Some of these companies are meeting with major success.

Deutsch reminds that transparency (透明度) is key when using surplus food. Consumers like the idea of helping the environment. They don’t like feeling a company has something to hide. ABC News reported that meat companies often use beef trimmings in ground beef. The product is perfectly safe to eat. But its pink appearance, and the idea that the meat companies were hiding its presence from consumers, caused great anger.

1. Why are people willing to accept surplus foods?
A.The foods are cheap.
B.The foods taste good.
C.They consider it a creative idea.
D.They consider it an eco-friendly idea.
2. What can be concluded from Paragraph 3?
A.Food shortage is a global issue.
B.Food waste is caused unconsciously.
C.Food waste has done harm to the environment.
D.Food waste can happen in many different ways.
3. What do the examples of Misfit Juicery and Barstensvol show?
A.Using “waste!” to make food is available commercially.
B.Surplus foods can bring in more money for companies.
C.Soups from surplus vegetables are easy to make.
D.Juice made from ugly fruits tastes better.
4. What’s Deutsch’s main purpose in the last paragraph?
A.To stress the importance of food safety.
B.To offer a suggestion to food companies.
C.To explain the meaning of consumer needs.
D.To point out a major problem in the food industry.

3 . Dog owners who lived near Chicago’s Soldier Ficeld knew to watch out for the coyote(从林猴).

The’ wild, dog-like animal’ lived somewhere among the tall buildings near the football stadium. As the sun went down each evening, the coyote would lie in the grass next to a parking lot, waiting. Within his view, peopte walked their dogs along a bike trail. Each night, the soyote would assault the firstt dog to come along.

Dr. Stanley Gehrt, a scientist at the Ohio State University, led the team that solved the problem. Besides studying coyotes, he and his co-workers teach people ways to avoid problems with coyotes. In short, he says, Don’t feed them. and manage your pets.

The secret to the coyote’s success is intelligence. To survive in the wild, a coyote must hunt small animals, and avoid becoming a meal for wolves or bears.“This way of living creates a super-smart animal,Dr. Gehrt says. One of the smartest changes coyotes made was to hide during tbe day and come out mainly at night b the city.

Coyotes have also learned to avoid their biggest killer cars. One coyote has been seen sitting patiently at a busy crossroads. She may not know how traffic lights work, but she has learned that; the cars will soon stop long enough for her to cross the street.

The male that charge at passing dogs near Soldiet Field is another example. Dr.Gehrt and his co-workers had already been watching the coyote for months, and the animal had always avoided dogs. But now he and his mate had a home with young coyote on top of the parking lot nearby. He was charging at the dogs to protect his family.

The researchers solved the problem. When the coyote pair appeared in the evening, they ran toward them, shouting and shaking a noisemaker——a coffee can with coins rattling(格格作响) inside.“Usually, that’s all you have to do,’’ Dr. Gehrt says.“You do it once, and you’ll never see that coyote again. Finally, the coyote pair moved out of the parking lot.

1. What troubled dog owners living near Soldier Field?

文章大意:本文是夹叙夹议文。文章作者通过讲述自己的育儿经历介绍了一个人生哲理。

6 . As a father of four, I’m concerned about how to lead my children to be good young men and women in such an unstable time. I have studied philosophy, mysticism, and religion my entire life. They provide great lessons in responsibility and growth. However, I also recognize that, at least at this point in their lives, my children are not terribly interested in such subjects. While I was reflecting on this, I was reminded of a line in a song I had heard recently. It goes, “f you had only one chance to say something, what would it be?”

That night, I found my two oldest kids lounging on the couch watching a TV show that featured violence, cursing and even some “adult scenes”. I quietly sat on a chair next to them. I saw my boy straighten up, and my girl pretended to ignore me. I didn’t make any usual comments about the pointlessness of such programs. I didn’t even roll my eyes, although this took some effort. I simply asked:

Can you tell me how this will make you a better person?

Without a word, I got up and left the room. About ten minutes later, to my surprise, the children were in their rooms doing their homework and the television was silent. Remarkable.

This philosophy can change the way we live our lives. For example, whenever I feel angry and get the urge to lash out, I ask myself, “How does this acting or feeling the way I do right now make me a better person?“ I began to realize that rarely did my thoughts or actions result in self-improvement. so I made conscious efforts to change my mindset and behavior.

We all want to be better fathers, mothers, sons and daughters. Better workers, better leaders, better lovers... this list goes on. Sometimes succeeding in these roles can be tough. But one question connects us with all those duties we possess to society and ourselves, “Is this making me a better person?”

Whatever I said, it worked. My daughter has begun watching nature programs instead of violent TV shows, and she decided to go to school to become a counselor. My son told me he wants to be a police officer. I've since thrown away all those parenting magazines and books I've collected over the years because I made more progress with a single question than I did with hundreds of pages of "experts" advice.

1. When the writer found his kids watching inappropriate TV programs that night, he appeared ________
A.criticalB.indifferentC.anxiousD.calm
2. How can this philosophy change the way we live our lives?
A.By calming ourselves down when we are angry
B.By providing us with new mindset and behavior
C.By helping us realize our need for self-improvement
D.By raising a question about our current action and feling
3. Why did the writer throw away his parenting magazines and books?
A.Because they didn’t offer him any help.
B.Because his kids had grown out of them.
C.Because that single question was more useful.
D.Because the expert advice was too much to follow.
4. The writer wrote this passage to ________
A.introduce a life philosophy by telling a parenting story
B.convince teenagers of the downsides to watch TV
C.call on other parents to trust themselves instead of experts
D.inform the readers of how he helped his kids set good goals

文章大意:本文是说明文,介绍了中国的航天事业及天河核心舱。

7 . China, whose astronauts have long been deliberately prevented from the ISS (国际空间站), successfully launched the first core module (核心舱) of its planned space station on Thursday morning from the Wenchang launch site in the southern island of Hainan. The module, currently the largest spacecraft developed by China, was launched into low earth orbit by a Long March 5B rocket, marking the first step of China’s efforts to build its own station in two years. The space station won’t launch all at once: it will be assembled from several modules launching at different times and will be fully operational by the end of 2022.

The core module has a length of 16.6 meters and a living space of 50 cubic meters. It’s expected to operate for 10 to 15 years. Eleven launches are scheduled in the next two years. The first manned mission was launched in June of this year—sending three astronauts to orbit for about three months, during which the life support system and maintenance would be tested.

It won’t be as large as the ISS—about one fifth of its size and similar to the Russian Mir space station, which operated from 1986 to 2001. China launched its first manned space flight in 2003—more than 40 years after NASA. But as the nation has grown richer and more powerful in recent decades, its space program has sped up.

China’s space station-the core module is known as Tianhe, which means harmony of the heavens—will conduct a number of scientific experiments. Six projects have been fully accepted so far including one on the possible effects of spaceflight on cancer tumors (肿瘤) conducted by researchers from Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium and France. “International cooperation helps Chinn’s scientific community to learn from other nations and describe China as a cooperative world power,” said David Burbach, a professor at the US Naval War College.

The two countries established diplomatic (外交的) relations in 1979. However, there’s been very little cooperation between the US and China in space since 2011, when US Congress passed an act to prevent NASA from having any cooperation with individuals of the Chinese space program.

1. How did China successfully develop her core module?
A.By copying it from NASA.B.By planning it early.
C.By developing it on her own.D.By cooperating with US.
2. What is the purpose of the cancer tumors project?
A.To test if tumors can live in space.
B.To examine if tumors are influenced by spaceflight.
C.To boost international cooperation in space.
D.To establish good relations with other countries.
3. What impression does China’s space program give other countries?
A.It’s controversial.B.It’s confidentialC.It’s aggressive.D.It’s cooperative.
4. Why does China have little cooperation with NASA?
A.The US doesn’t allow the cooperation.
B.The US doesn’t trust China’s technology.
C.China’s space technology has been advanced enough.
D.China hasn’t established diplomatic relations with the US.

文章大意:本文是说明文。越来越多的老年人倾向于从事志愿者服务,以充实自身业余生活。

8 . Volunteering is one of the best ways for the elderly to get involved in their local communities, share a lifetime of experiences, develop new relationships, and help make the world a little bit better.

There are many good reasons to volunteer, and it’s important to understand that many of them involve meeting the older people’s needs. “That’s not being selfish,” says Tema Fishbein, director of external affairs for Experience Corp, a school mentoring nonprofit that places older people in schools in 22 communities around the country. “Most people do selfless things for personal reasons, and that’s not necessarily bad,” she says. Among the motives she sees in volunteers are a desire to give back to the community to improve one’s own life and health, to meet new peers (同龄人) and expand one’s social network, and to give purpose and meaning to life.

Will you be good at it? People who’ve functioned well in the home and workplace have picked up the skills needed to be productive volunteers. Life experiences count as much here as book smarts. Most volunteer work is people intensive, so the ability to work well with others is particularly useful. “Someone who has a good work ethic (职业道德) or commitment to what they want to do makes for a good volunteer,” Fishbein says. “They also need flexibility so they can fit themselves into an organization. And they all need empathy — the ability to put themselves in someone else’s shoes.”

Volunteers spend different amounts of time in their work, but the best matches are those where supply and demand are balanced. Do you want to make a commitment to tutor a young student, such as building a close relationship that may extend over several years? Or are you more interested in single shot opportunities that might engage you for a few weeks or months? You can find them all. “We want our volunteers to be renewable and to work with us for a number of years,” says Fishbein.

1. What is the benefit of the older people’s volunteering?
A.Getting more help from local communities.B.Sharing their own experiences with others.
C.Making others daily life easier.D.Keeping in touch with old friends.
2. What is the motivation of the older people volunteers?
A.To join the nonprofit organization.B.To make young friends.
C.To lead a meaningful life.D.To change their lifestyles.
3. What can we know from the third paragraph?
A.Learning new skills is required to become a volunteer.
B.Book smarts are more important than life experiences.
C.Working experience is required to become a volunteer.
D.A person who is flexible is welcome for the volunteer organization.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Volunteering is a rewarding way for the elderly
B.What does a great volunteer need
C.Seniors use their wisdom to help others
D.Volunteer services help build communities

文章大意:本文是记叙文。回顾往日,作者发现自己总在为别人的事忙碌,于是决心独自出国旅游。这次旅行让作者找回了自我,变得更加自信。

9 . My simple life consisted of books, a cat, and a glass of drink every evening. Occasional dinners with friends kept me from being a total shut-in. But a sense of unease settled over me. My mother used to say, “You don’t regret what you did but what you didn’t do. “Honoring her philosophy, I wouldn’t let fear win.

I couldn’t remember the last time I had done something just for myself. I needed to set personal boundaries. So I grabbed my laptop and began researching tours. A couple of clicks and glasses of drink later, I booked a tour. In a few months, I would fly to Greece all by myself.

The night before my big adventure, “what-ifs” crowded into my brain. All my friends and family were impressed with my bravery. Off I went excitedly with my suitcase. We flew across the Atlantic on a huge plane packed with vacationing families and senior citizens. After a long, sleepless flight, I stepped off the plane into the airport. Foreign languages filled my ears, but that couldn’t diminish my initial feeling. I was as excited as I set out. My Greek adventure began.

I spotted a driver holding a sign with my name on it. I pinched (捏) myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I was now one of those women seen in airport posters; an international world traveler.

Traveling alone empowered me to become a brave new woman—one who walked through fear to find a greater sense of self. I learned to focus on making time a priority. Now I confidently say “no” to an event or a project I don’t want to handle, I no longer make excuses or feel guilty.

1. What caused the author to travel to Greece?
A.The suggestion from friends.B.The motivation from her books.
C.The encouragement from her friends.D.The need to do something for herself.
