文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要从科学和历史两方面分析了人们喜欢吃辣的原因。

1 . You know the feeling — your ears start to warm up, your tongue goes numb, you start sweating and taking deep breaths. You know eating something spicy would be painful, but you choose to do it anyway. Are humans just masochistic (受虐狂的), or is there something else going on? The answer lies in both science and history.

Let’s start with the science. Spicy isn’t actually a taste like salty, sweet, sour and bitter — it’s a sensation(感觉). This sensation is caused by a chemical compound in chili peppers called capsaicin (辣椒素). When we eat foods containing capsaicin, our bodies are tricked into thinking the temperature is rising. In trying to temper the burning sensation, our bodies release endorphins, which control pain and, at the same time, give a feeling of pleasure.

This is what is happening chemically, but there is also a conscious side to choosing spicy food. Dr. Tamara Rosenbaum, a cognitive neuroscientist, explains that this is because we are rational beings — we know that the burning sensation of chili does not physically harm us. Furthermore, we get pleasure from the other ingredients(成分) chili is generally cooked and eaten with — including fat, sugar and salt.

This masochistic relationship with capsaicin has been long, starting in the Andes of South America, where chili peppers originate. Humans were among the few mammals on Earth that developed a taste for capsaicin. Archeological evidence suggests that humans started cultivating chili peppers about six thousand years ago. Human intervention(介入) changed the chili pepper to suit human tastes and needs — including the pepper’s color, size and capsaicin content — helping to explain the many different types of chili peppers now available.

Fast-forward to today, and our love affair with the chili pepper is going strong. We eat around 57.3 million tons of peppers globally each year, and chili is a key ingredient in traditional dishes from Mexico to Korea. Maybe we are masochistic, after all.

1. What does science say about people eating spicy food?
A.People can get necessary nutrients from it.
B.People are unaware of the potential harm.
C.People are addicted to capsaicin in chilies.
D.People can take pleasure from the pain.
2. What do people think of spicy food, according to Rosenbaum?
A.It cannot be digested easily.B.It is more delicious than others.
C.It doesn’t really hurt the body.D.It isn’t fit for human consumption.
3. What can we know about people’s love for chili peppers from the last two paragraphs?
A.It is common worldwide.B.It is long-standing and deep.
C.It impacts food culture greatly.D.It distinguishes people from animals.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Why Do We Eat Spicy Food?
B.What Makes Chili Peppers Hot?
C.How Do Chili Peppers Conquer the World?
D.Does Eating Spicy Food Have Health Benefits?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文探讨了英国科学家探索北极冰层再冻结方法,通过抽水结冰和反射阳光减缓融化,虽需大量努力但有望减缓海平面上升。

2 . Scientists from the UK recently visited the Arctic, the northernmost region of Earth, to test out a method of “refreezing” its ice. The Arctic is extremely cold, but the ice is melting due to global warming. Over the past 30 years, the oldest and thickest parts have shrunk by as much as 95%. This is a concern because the melting ice causes sea levels to rise.     1    , whereas the white ice reflects it back into space.

In January, a research team traveled to Cambridge Bay, in Arctic Canada.     2    . This water spread out across the ice and froze, replacing the snow that usually lies there. Having a layer of fresh ice rather than snow on top reduces the temperature of the ice.     3    , making the ice thicker by natural means too.

The plan is for people who live in the region to measure the thickness of the ice over several weeks.     4    . Even if the idea works and the ice gets thicker, it could still take about 10 million pumps to reverse the melting ice all over the Arctic. “That’s a lot of pumps ... but it’s not absolutely out of this world,” said Shaun Fitzgerald from the University of Cambridge, which is involved in the expedition.

5    . One involves sprinkling powder over the ice to reflect the Sun’s rays back, which could reduce heat and the rate of melting. Another project would install underwater curtains in front of glaciers to protect them from being melted by warm seawater.

A.Experts are exploring other ideas too
B.It also causes the seawater under it to freeze faster
C.This also limits the environmental impact of the study
D.It also makes the planet warmer because the dark water absorbs the Sun’s heat
E.They cut a hole in the ice and used a pump to bring seawater from under the ice up to the surface
F.The pump used by the scientists is powered by green hydrogen, a gas produced using renewable energy
G.The team hopes to add about three feet of ice in order to stop it from melting completely during the summer

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。研究发现,听鸟叫声和水声可以减轻压力,改善情绪。研究人员早就知道置身于大自然中有好处,但一项新的研究发现,自然的声音也对健康有益。

3 . Listening to birds and water can lower stress and improve mood, study finds. Researchers have long known there are benefits from being in nature. Living around trees can help you live longer. Walking in the woods is good for your mood. Being near water can have positive effects on your well-being.

A new study finds that natural sounds offer health benefits too. There is plenty of evidence that spending time in natural areas is good for our health — but typically this research is done from a visual perspective, but we are curious what the role is of sounds we hear in these spaces.

Some examples they found reported in those studies included decreased pain, lowered stress, improved mood, and better cognitive (认知的) function. With these results in hand, they then listened to audio recordings from 251 sites in 68 national parks across the United States.

The sites with the most natural sounds and the lowest man-made sounds were located in Alaska, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest and were far from urban areas. Only three locations with high natural sounds and low noise pollution were within 100 kilometers (62 miles) of urban areas.

However, despite human-made noises being heard most of the time at sites in urban locations, birds were still heard about 60% of the time and geophysical sounds like wind and rain heard about 19% of the time.

Not all natural sounds deliver the same benefits, the researchers found. For example, they discovered that the sounds of water had the largest impact on improving positive emotions and health outcomes, while bird sounds ease stress and annoyance. And the sounds of both birds and water were heard more than 23% of the time in the national park recording sites.

Interestingly, there was also some evidence that natural sounds have benefits over silence. There was also evidence that more different types of natural sounds — more types of birds singing rather than just one type of bird— have benefits over fewer sounds.

1. What does the new study focus on?
A.The effect natural sounds have on health.
B.The harm man-made sounds do to health.
C.The benefits natural sounds bring to the environment.
D.The effect nature has on people from visual perspective.
2. What is an ideal site according to paragraph 4?
A.It is away from cities.
B.It has no noise pollution.
C.It has bird songs most of the time.
D.It is within 62 miles of urban areas.
3. What brings more benefits to people?
A.The silence of nature.
B.The sounds of water.
C.The diversity of natural sounds.
D.Natural sounds mixed with noises.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.It Is Beneficial to Live Close to Water
B.We Are Surrounded by All Kinds of Sounds
C.The Sounds of Nature Affect Your Well-being
D.Man-made Noise Pollution Is Harmful to Our Health

8 . There are all electric cars, boats, trains, and small planes that are a sustainable way to travel. Larger airplanes have not been able to make the transition because the lithium-ion (锂离子的) batteries are too heavy and not strong enough to provide the power for the airplane to take-off.

NASA is working on a new innovative solid-state battery that can be used by the aviation (航空) industry. The batteries, called Solid-state Architecture Batteries for Enhanced Recharge ability and Safety (SABERS) do not suffer from any of the limitations of lithium-ion batteries and can outperform the batteries that are available now.

The solid-state batteries that NASA researchers are working on carry more energy, and are considerably lighter, and much safer to use. That’s because solid-state batteries do not contain liquids which can lead to overheating, fires, and charge loss.

Battery performance is the key to making aviation sustainable and practical. The batteries must be able to store large amounts of energy without being too heavy. And the battery must be able to rapidly release that energy. That’s where solid-state technology comes in.

Liquid batteries require each cell to be inside its own steel casing. Solid-state batteries can be stacked in a single casing and that reduces the weight. The battery can also run at much higher temperatures that require much less cooling. All of this makes NASA’s new battery very promising.

Now that NASA has demonstrated the new battery’s properties, the agency is looking at all its potential uses. SABERS is cooperating with researchers from Georgia Tech. “Georgia Tech has a big focus on micro mechanics of how the cell changes during operation. That helped us look at the pressures inside the battery, which then helped us improve the battery even more,” Viggiano said in the news release. “It also led us to understand from a practical standpoint how to make a cell like this.”

He added that SABERS has grown from an idea discussed around a lunch table to a possible solution for sustainable aeronautics (航空学). A fully electric airplane is more likely to appear on the market.

1. Which of the following statement is true according to the first two paragraphs?
A.Larger airplanes have been using lithium- ion batteries widely.

2. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Advantageous features of the new battery.
B.Current main tasks of NASA researchers.
C.Potential problems of traditional batteries.
D.Working principles of lithium-ion batteries.
3. What can be inferred from Rocco Viggiano’s words in the sixth paragraph?
A.SABERS appears too optimistic about its future.
B.The stability of SABERS has been proved perfect.
C.Further research is being done to improve ASBERS.
D.Georgia Tech is in charge of producing the cells for ASBERS.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?

9 . Have you ever seen your cat or dog eating grass? They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called “zoo pharmacognosy” or, more commonly, animal self-medication.

Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of these daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a species of cabreuva, which is well known for its medical properties.

Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it. Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites (寄生虫).

While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-medication, the use of it suggests that cabreuva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species maintain their magnitude by improving their health.

This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.

1. Why do tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree?
A.They are trying to cure diseases.
B.They would like to digest what they eat.
C.They are attracting companions’ attention.
D.They regards the tree as part of their territory.
2. What do researchers find through camera- traps?
A.Many animals copy monkeys’ behaviors.
B.Animals can help each other clean the fur.
C.The cabreduva is the habitat of tamarin monkeys.
D.Resin may possibly used as medicine by some species.
3. What does the author think about animals using the resin as medicine?
A.It helps the species bond more firmly.
B.It’s an strange but impressive animal behavior.
C.It benefits both the individuals and the whole species group.
D.They need much practice before mastering this survival skill.
4. What is the possible significance of the discovery according to the passage?
A.Promoting evolution of creatures.B.Contributing to forest conservation.
C.Developing new medicine from resinD.Motivating the study of monkeys’ health

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了中国唐代著名诗人杜甫。

10 . “We have Dante, Shakespeare and Du Fu. These poets create the very values by which poetry is judged,” remarked Harvard professor Stephen Owen. Even though scholars studying Chinese history and culture often compare Du Fu to Dante and Shakespeare, this famous Chinese poet and thinker, who is also greatly respected in East Asian cultures, is still not very well-known in the West.

However, with the screening of Du Fu, China’s Greatest Poet, the first English-language documentary feature about the poet, the days of Du Fu as China’s best-kept literary secret seem to come to an end.

From the Yellow River to the Yangtze Gorges and down to the forested hills of Hunan Province, Michael Wood, the documentary presenter, traveled to various places, including the poet’s birthplace in Gongyi, Henan Province, the Tang Dynasty capital Chang’an (now Xi’an), and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage in Chengdu, Southwest China.

Along the way, he met and talked to ordinary people, dancers and musicians. They helped to tell the interesting story of the poet whose writings have been heard for many centuries, speaking for the pain of ordinary people caught in war, starvation (饥饿), and natural disasters.

“Chinese people really value the recording of history, and Du Fu is better than anyone at reflecting history in his poetry. That’s because historical events are reflected in his own life and spiritual journey,” noted Zeng Xiangbo, a professor of ancient Chinese literature at Renmin University of China.

“Du’s poetry reflects the experience and transforms it, so it becomes a part of the emotional vocabulary of the Chinese culture,” said Stephen Owen, who in 2016 completed an eight-year-long project to translate Du Fu’s 1,400 poems into English.

1. What can we know about Du Fu’s poetry from the passage?
A.It is only popular in China.B.It focuses on the joy of life.
C.It is not well-known in the West.D.It is simple and easy to understand.
2. What did Michael Wood do to explore for the documentary?
A.Discussed with modern poets and scholars.
B.Visited historical sites significant to Du Fu’s life.
C.Analyzed Du Fu’s influence in Western literature.
D.Compared Western poetic styles with Eastern ones.
3. What does Stephen Owen’s eight-year-long project involve?
A.Publishing a book about Du Fu.
B.Translating Du Fu’s poems into English.
C.Studying the development of Chinese poetry.
D.Evaluating the effects of history on Du Fu’s creation.
4. What is the purpose of this passage?
A.To highlight the importance of Du Fu’s poetry.
B.To show some little-known facts about Du Fu.
C.To discuss the link between culture and literature.
D.To introduce the English documentary about poetry.
