Human activities that have     1     effects on animals can be just harmful. When we build farms or factories, we     2     animal habitats and leave many animals with nowhere to live, or no food to eat. We can also put animals in danger without ever entering their habitats. Air, water, noise and light pollution can all have a deep and     3     influence quite far from their source.     4     due to pollution caused by ship traffic and other human activities, the dolphin population has     5     greatly. As the human population continues to grow, so does the effect we have on animals.

“ .…. To a person nothing is more     1    than their life, and if they     2    me with that life, how could I refuse that …” These words of Dr Lin Qiaozhi give us a look into the heart of this amazing woman, and what     3    her through a life of hard options.

As a five-year-old girl, Lin Qiaozhi was deeply     4    by her mother’s death. At age 18, instead of following the traditional path of marriage like the     5    of girls, she chose to study medicine. “Why should girls learn so much? Finding a good husband should be their final goal!” her brother     6    , thinking of the high tuition fees. She responded, “I’d rather     7     single to study all my life!”

Eight years later, Lin graduated from Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) with the Wenhai Scholarship, the highest prize     8    to graduates. She immediately became the first woman ever to be hired as a resident physician in the OB-GYN department of the PUMC Hospital. Within six months, she was named a chief resident     9    , a position that usually took four years to achieve. After working for a few years, she was sent to study in Europe and then, in 1939, in the US. She greatly impressed her American colleagues, who invited her to stay. Dr Lin, however,     10    the offer. She wanted to serve the women and children at home.

Today was my first day back in San Francisco after camping in the Redwood Forest and visiting the wine country of Napa Valley.
