There are various reasons why people compose poetry. Some poems tell a story or describe a certain image in the readers’ mind. Others try to convey certain f    1     such as joy and sorrow. The distinctive characteristics of poetry often include economic use of words, descriptive and v    2     language, integrated imagery, l    3     devices such as similes and metaphors, and arrangements of words, lines, rhemes, and rhythm. Poets use many different forms of poetry to e    4     themselves. Now we will look at a few of the simpler forms.

Some of the first poems a young child learns in English are nursery r    5    . They are usually the traditional poems or f    6     songs. The language of these rhymes, like Poem A, is to the p    7     but has a storyline. Many children enjoy nursery rhymes because they rhyme, have a strong rhythm, and often repeat the same words. The poems may not make s    8     and even seem contradictory, but they are easy to learn and r    9    . By playing with the words in nursery rhymes children learned about language.

When you think of a fearsome hunter, images of lions and sharks may spring to mind. Recent research by     1     scientists, however, shows that in fact, humans are the most fearsome hunters who have the greatest impact on animal populations. Human activities have brought many animals close to     2    . In the last 500 years, over 300 species of animals have gone extinct. Some activities, such as hunting and fishing, directly harm animals,     3     other activities, such as development in towns and cities, impact indirectly on animal populations.

Hunting and fishing have directly influenced the world’s animal populations. Some people hunt animals for food: whale meat is     4     in some parts of the world. Some people hunt animals for fashion: animal skin is used to make coats and bags. Still others hunt animals just for fun: deer are     5     and shot by people who enjoy the     6     of the sport.

Human activities that have indirect effects on animals can be just as     7    . When we build farms or factories, we destroy animal habitats and leave many animals with    8     to live, or no food to eat. We can also put animals in danger without ever entering their habitats. Air, water, noise and light pollution can all have a deep and     9     influence quite far from their source. Partly due to pollution caused by ship traffic and other human activities, the dolphin population has     10     greatly. As the human population continues to grow, so does the effect we have on animals.

For example, making eye contact — looking into someone’s eyes — in some countries is a way to display interest. In other countries, by c    4    , eye contact is not always approved of. For example, in many Middle Eastern countries, men and women are not socially permitted to make eye contact. In Japan, it may demonstrate r    5     to look down when talking to an older person.

The gesture for “OK” has different meanings in different c    6    . In Japan, someone who w    7     another person employing the gesture might think it means money. In France, a person encountering an i    8     gesture may interpret it as meaning zero. H    9    , you should avoid making this gesture in Brazil and Germany, as it is not considered p    10    .

It can be a big headache to balance your developing     1     (精神需求) too. You enter a strange middle ground — no longer a small child but not quite an adult. You have both a new desire for independence and a continued need for your parents’ love and support. You feel ready to be more responsible and make decisions    2     (自行).
