Chilis (辣椒) weren’t always in China, says Brian Dott, a history professor at Whitman College and author of The Chile Pepper in China: A Cultural Biography.    1     (originate) in Central and South America, Capsicum plants were unknown in China until around the 16th Century, when a boom in     2     (explore) and trade brought chilis to the Chinese mainland.

Gao Lian, a playwright who lived near    5    is now Shanghai, wasn’t “all that excited about it as a condiment (调味品) or a medicine,” Dott says of his account. Instead, he used it as a decorative plant.

But while elite Chinese enjoyed chili peppers in their decorative gardens, the masses began eating and enjoying the hot plants. By 1765, local historians noted that chi is were used    6     (flavor) sauces, vinegar, savory oils, and preserved vegetables in Hunan. There’s even a recipe for a condiment reminding people of chili crisp in The Harmonious Cauldron, the    7     (early) Chinese culinary book to include chili peppers.

    8     (like) other spices, chili peppers weren’t farmed and traded as commodities. Instead, they    9     (pass) from person to person and cultivated in small crops, says Dott, falling into the hands of skilled farmers who bred even better chilis overtime. These peppers—and the condiment made by frying them in oil—became must-have ingredients all over China, eventually filtering (渗透) to every level of society and becoming so universal    10    they were considered part of the nation’s identity.

For years I     1     (ask) why I volunteer, and my answer remains the same. I volunteer because it makes     2     difference.

Growing up in Hawaii, I saw Dad taking my family downtown to pass out cheeseburgers to the     3     (home), and my passion grew from there. Over the years, I placed my focus     4     food insecurity and that led me to found the first food pantry (食物分发处) on the campus of Indiana University. I will never forget the day when I opened the pantry. A student walked in the door and he said, “I was in class with you     5     (early). Thank you for doing this because I was trying to figure out what I was going to eat this week.” The food pantry     6     (actual) helped many a student on the campus,     7    , for some reason, had difficulty     8     (get) everyday meals. Those who got food from there came back to support our food pantry, making it a place to pass on kindness.

Imagine a place where, as a nature lover, you have a chance to see 17 species of animals, 94 different kinds of birds and 230 types of plants in just four days.

It might seem like an impossible task, especially for someone who is not a     1     (profession) scientific researcher. But that’s exactly     2     those who took part in the Nangqen International Wildlife Watch Festival did,     3     many of their sightings recorded in their cameras.

The event,     4     (hold) between July 20 and 23 this year in Nangqen county, Qinghai province, was organized by the county government and Shanshui Conservation Center, a nonprofit organization based in Beijing,     5     (celebrate) the rich biodiversity of this unique part of China.

It also helped the evolution of Chinese culture by enhancing communication     6     the south and the north.

It is widely acknowledged     7     the Grand Canal is precious heritage passed down to us by our ancestors and is flowable culture that should     8     (preserve). China will continue to carry out     9     (integrate) regional development strategies for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the Yangtze River Delta region, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and draw up a new national policy for environmental protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River basin. Mount Emei,    1    (locate) in the southwest of Sichuan Province, is an ancient and famous attraction in China.

Three million years ago, the main part of Mount Emei    2    (rise) sharply along a fault line here. Due to a complex combination of erosion (侵蚀) and weathering，a massive    3     (high) difference of over 2,600 meters was formed between today’s mountain top and the Emei Plain. The Summit of Ten Thousand Buddhas,    4    an altitude of 3,099 meters, is the highest peak of Mount Emei. In a commanding position, The Golden Summit with the biggest concentration of temples and scenic spots on Mount Emei    5    (call) the largest and highest place of worship of Chinese Buddhism in the world.

The Buddha statue of Samantabhadra,    6    (measure) 48 meters high, is the highest golden Buddha in the world. The ten heads of the Buddha statue are divided into three layers, each with different expressions,    7    represent the ten mentalities of ordinary people. The Golden Summit is also the most suitable place    8    (appreciate) the impressive Mount Emei “Sea of Clouds.”

Three Chinese astronauts of theShenzhou-13manned spaceship,    1    completed their six-month space station mission, returned to the Earth safely on April 16.

“The mission marks that China has completed the    2    (confirm) of key technologies of its space station and also    3    (set) a record for Chinese astronauts’ duration in orbit,” said the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).

Shenzhou-13’s return capsule,    4    (carry) astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu, touched down at the Dongfeng landing site in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. TheShenzhou-13manned mission was    5    complete success, the CMSA announced.

After the return capsule landed successfully, the ground search team arrived at the landing site. The medical staff confirmed that the astronauts were    6    good health.

Three astronauts    7    (lift) one by one by ground workers and placed onto chairs in front of the capsule. They looked    8    (relax) and waved to the ground crew.
