The London Book Fair, one of the world’s     1     (large), kicked off on March, 12, 2024 with industry insiders calling for greater collaboration between Chinese and international publishers.     2     (speak) to Xinhua after the launch of the “China Perspective” Series, managing director for book publishing at Taylor & Francis Jeremy North said that people need books not only     3     (write) by Western scholars but also those coming directly from China.

“Our partnerships with our Chinese publishing partners are a wonderful example of how, whatever else is going on in the world, you can work together and do     4     (real) creative things,” North said. “There’s a large benefit because good publishing, good scholarship and good information help a lot of people.”

This year, around 50 Chinese publishers are showcasing more than 3,200     5     (type) of China-themed books at the event. These cover a wide range of areas including politics, culture, academic works, and trending topics such     6     low-carbon and artificial intelligence (AI). One third of these titles are foreign language editions.

Wang Xubin,     7     is president of Zhejiang Ancient Books Publishing House, told Xinhua that collaborations between publishers from different countries are crucial. During     8    event, the company launched a new book entitled “Masterpieces from Dunhuang in the British Museum’s Collection.” Wang said that international publishing cooperation not only facilitates academic research, but also     9     (improve) cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world.

This year’s book fair     10     (expect) to attract over 30,000 publishing professionals and 1,000 companies from around the globe.

For some, cloning (克隆) is a problem, since it means that the awkward day     1     somebody proposes cloning people is unavoidable. For others, it will help medical researchers mass-produce animals for     2     (they) experiments.

That sort of cloning is the goal of Dr Sun Qiang of the Chinese Academy of Science. In 2018, Dr Sun made headlines by     3     (raise) a crab-eating monkey. The following year, he performed     4     same trick with five crab-eaters. On January 16, 2024, he reported in Nature Communications that he has invented a better way to clone monkeys in quantity and that he has in his lab a healthy two-year-old male monkey     5     (produce) with the new method.

Cloning has become     6     (popularity) since it gave the world Dolly, a sheep that, in 1996, became the first animal to be cloned from an adult with this method. But success     7     (rate) are low. For most species only, 1—3% of implants produce a surviving new-born. Even for cattle, where the odds are better, they are still only 5—20%. At the moment, the only people making money from cloning are companies that clone pets and horses. If cloning animals is to become a     8     (scientific) useful technology, then better ways of doing it have to     9     (find).

“    10     we have just obtained one healthy baby monkey from 11 implants, it’s not a bad outcome for the first trial of a new technique,” said Dr Sun.

Many countries around Asia have unique ways of observing Lunar New Year. Some of these are famous, but Singapore has one special way,    1     you may not know about. Each year, cooks across the country prepare yu sheng, a salad made with raw fish. The salad is placed at the centre of a dinner table. Diners will gather around and use their chopsticks     2    (throw) the salad up into the air. This practice is known     3     Lo Hei.

Since its origins as     4     simple raw fish dish back in the 1930s，the recipe has undergone a series of transformations, and even until today, people are still finding innovative ways to present this dish. “Lo Hei”, in Cantonese (广东话)    6     (literal) translates to “tossing (掷) up good fortune”, and it refers to the ritual (仪式) adopted in Singapore that involves a group of people gathered around a     7    (mass) plate, tossing its contents violently while saying out lucky    8    (phrase) before eating it. For example, when the golden crackers (薄脆饼干) are added, everyone will say “bian di huang jin”. This     9    (mean) “the entire floor will be covered with gold”. A1so, it is popularly believed that the higher the toss, the     10    (good) your prospects and fortune in the year ahead.

For thousands of years, people have told fables (寓言)     1     (teach) a lesson or to pass on wisdom. Fables were part of the oral tradition of many early cultures, and the well-known Aesop’s fables date to the     2     (six) century, B. C. Yet, the form of the fable still has values today,     3     Rachel Carson says in “A Fable for Tomorrow.”

Carson uses a simple, direct style common to fable. In fact, her style and tone (口吻) are seemingly directed at children. “There was once a town in the heart of America,     4     all life seemed to enjoy peaceful existence with its surroundings,” her fable begins,     5     (borrow) some familiar words from many age-old fables. Behind the simple style, however, is a serious message     6     (intend) for everyone.

    7     (difference) from traditional fables, Carson’s story ends with an accusation instead of a moral. She warns of the environmental dangers facing society, and she teaches that people must take responsibility     8     saving their environment.

The themes of traditional fables often deal with simple truths about everyday life. However, Carson’s theme is a more weighty     9     (warn) about environmental destruction. Carson proves that a simple literal form that has been passed down through the ages can still     10     (employ) today to draw attention to important truths.

Friendships are very important during adolescence (青少年). Teen friendships help young people feel a sense of acceptance and belonging. We all know that having good friends makes us happier. Teenagers having good friendship have better mental health. Researchers from Australia’s Murdoch and Griffith universities     7    (survey) teens. They found when they were with peers rather than adults they dealt better after a stressful event. Sanfutie, or Sanfu medicinal patch, is a bandage with traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) believe that    1     (receive) Sanfutie during the hottest summer days is an effective way     2     (prevent) and treat diseases occurring or being worse in winter, such as coughs, asthma and arthritis.

The treatment is based on the TCM principle of yin and yang,     3     believes the balance of both elements in the body     4     (be) vital for good health. Sanfutie contains a paste of herbal     5     (extract) that are “hot” in nature, and when     6     (apply) to specific acupuncture points (穴位), usually on the lack and neck, they replenish (补充) the yang elements.

These patches     7     (use) in TCM since the earliest recorded times of Chinese history, as it is found in the Huangdi Neijing (The Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor),     8     must-learn textbook for TCM practitioners, compiled at least 2,000 years ago. Sanfutie treatment became     9     (extreme) popular in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and has enjoyed a revival in recent years as more patients turn     10     TCM treatment.

New research has found that fruit and vegetable consumption and exercise can increase levels     1     happiness.

While     2     link between lifestyle and well-being has been     3     (previous) documented and often used in public health campaigns to encourage healthier diets and exercise, new findings show that there is also positive causation(因果关系) from lifestyle to life satisfaction.

Findings show that the ability of individuals to delay satisfaction and apply self-control plays a major role in influencing lifestyle decisions,     4     in turn have a positive impact on well-being.

With it being well known that lifestyle diseases     5     (be) a leading cause of ill health and mortality (死亡率) worldwide, these findings could have significant implications for public-health-policy makers.

Dr. Gschwandtner from the University of Kent said, “Behaviors that enable the planning-self    6     (strengthen) long-term goals are likely to be especially helpful in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If a better lifestyle not only makes us healthier but also     7     (happy), then it is clear win-win situation.”

Professor Kambhampati from the University of Reading said. “There has been a bigger shift in recent     8     (year) for healthier lifestyle choices. Establishing that     9     (eat) more fruit and vegetables and exercising can increase happiness and offer health benefits is a major development. This may also prove     10     (use) for policy campaigns around environment and sustainability.”
