Reading is a unique human experience. Just by skimming our eyes over some words, we can     1     (mental) travel across time and space. Hunters used dogs to help track and kill pandas in China until the country declared     1     law to protect the species. But dogs are still threatening the safety of this species.

Researchers     2    (begin) their investigation when two captive-born(圈养出生的) pandas, which had been released into Liziping Nature Reserve, were attacked by dogs.

There are dogs in panda reserves because there are villagers     3    (live) near the reserves and people have dogs. An adult panda is quite able to defend     4    (it) against one dog. However,     5     is hard to beat a pack of dogs.

In the study     6    (publish) in Scientific Reports, the researchers found dogs can wander more than 10 kilometers a night, some of     7     even live in the reserves. Earlier research found that pandas need a habitat of     8    (rough) 114 square kilometers to thrive (茁壮成长). Although most of the nature reserves for the pandas are large enough     9    (maintain) their populations, the panda’s territory could become smaller if dogs become part of it.

“The Chinese government has vaccinated(给……接种疫苗) the dogs and helped the villagers either remove the dogs or control them all the time. So things are getting much     10    (good),” James Spotila said.
