Unlike most of her fellow postgraduates, who found jobs in big cities, Zhang Xiaoyang, after graduation from Zhejiang University three years ago, chose to go to DunHuang Academy,     1     (land) a job as an archaeologist.

Despite being the world’s largest treasure of Buddhist art, living conditions in Dunhuang, which sits in the Gobi Desert in Northwest China’s Gansu province,     2     (be) tougher than in China’s big cities. People working here have to battle with sand and wind and suffer from     3     (lonely).

Zhang,     4     her late 20s, has an intense routine. Assigned two stressful tasks, she spends most of the day       5     (absorb) in her world with the excavation team in Tianwangtang. At night, she writes academic reports on the discoveries in Cave 254, which     6     (create) during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534).

“Dunhuang is a place of magic. For those who once planned to work here     7     (temporary), maybe it will be a few years     8     they move to bigger cities. But I’m totally fascinated by the site and amazed at     9     the ancient people lived in the desert around then. So I have decided to stay for decades,” said Zhang Xiaoyang.

Her story is featured in The Master of Dunhuang,     10     three—episode documentary, currently available on the streaming site Tencent Video, which has gained a lot of attention online.

Nature has always fascinated me. To brighten up the urban environment, there is nothing better     1     some attractive plants and flowers.

Growing up, I was always fortunate to be around well-tended gardens. My grandfather could actually have been considered to be quite “green-fingered”, as there were always impressive flowers in his garden. I had been a passive     2    (admire) of the work done by him and gardeners generally until quite recently,     3     I decided to turn my hand to cultivating some plants.     4     my grandfather, I only have a small balcony on which to conduct my activities, but that has not discouraged me in the slightest. It’s possible to make a nice “garden” even in the most     5    (limit) space, but one must also limit one’s ambitions to a certain extent. I decided to take the seeds of one humble little tomato and plant them in a number of pots. After several weeks, I     6    (amaze) by the results. I now have about 15 tomato plants on my balcony in different stages of     7    (grow).

It’s     8     rewarding sight to see this greenery on my balcony. I keep my fingers crossed that one day this little bit of nature will give me something very practical: some nice     9    (taste) tomatoes. It’s also very rewarding to be engaging in a practice which is as old as time itself, as plant life is     10    (essential) the most basic and oldest technology on our planet.

Yang Jiang was a well-known Chinese playwright, translator, and author. She belonged to     1     unique and beautiful existence in Chinese literature. She was the first Chinese academic     2    (translate) Miguel de Cervantes’ Spanish novel Don Quixote to Chinese and at that time, her translation     3     (honor) as the recreation of the original work       4     the basis of loyalty.

Yang was born into a rich family in 1911,     5    (original)named Yang Jikang. After eventually     6     (graduate) from Soochow University, she enrolled at the graduate school of Tsinghua University. She met her husband there, Qian Zhongshu, another acclaimed writer in China.

Other than translations, Yang     7     (author) many plays, novels, and essays during her writing career. Her short novel Mr. Wang,     8    (write) in 1984, was selected as an article in the textbook. In 1986, she got the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise, a famous Spanish civil order, for her     9     (achieve) in Don Quixote. Her bestseller was We Three in 2003,     10     sales exceeded 180,000 copies in two months. Yang passed away in 2016, at the age of 105.

A new branch of the Palace Museum is expected to rise on Beijing outskirts over the next few years to better showcase the     1     (museum) cultural relics.

After nearly a decade of preparation, construction of the new branch     2     (begin) last December. Located in Xiyehe, a village in Haidian District, the new branch will cover more than 100, 000 square meters, including     3     exhibition space of over 60, 000 square meters for cultural relics and more than 35, 000 square meters for relic     4     (restore).

At present, over 1. 86 million cultural relics     5     (house) in the museum. However, only about 10, 000 pieces are able to be displayed every year due to limited exhibition spaces     6     outdated offices.

Du Haijiang, deputy director of the Palace Museum, briefed the public on the project in an interview with CCTV on January 26th,     7     (explain) that calligraphy works and paintings couldn’t be put on display during rainy seasons, in winter or summer, because of strict temperature and humidity requirements. Some silk and cotton artworks     8    (current) cannot be exhibited at all for lack of the necessary environment.
