There is a saying that when life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade. But what if you are in     1     town on the French Riviera and life gives you extraordinarily delicious lemons? You sell them at high prices, of course! Then you have a big festival. Well, that’s     2     the city of Menton does anyway.

During this celebration, there are parades of floats, interspersed (点缀) with marching bands and costumed     3     (entertainer), just like any other carnival parade. But there’s one big     4     (different) — all of the floats     5     (make) of lemons and oranges. It’s an all-natural and refreshing change. But the real show-stopper is the exhibition of huge fruit sculptures in the Biovès Gardens. Some of these figures can be up to 10 metres tall.

First held in Menton, France in 1934, the festival is held every year     6     (celebrate) the coming of spring. It is spread over a couple of weeks,     7     (typical) near the end of February. During the festival, about 300 designers and builders spend several weeks     8     (create) structures with lemons and oranges     9     (base) on a particular theme. During COVID-19 lockdown, my husband, Peter and I needed something     1     (brighten) up our day. Peter found some flower pots,     2     (hope) flowers would attract some birds.

Saving food     3     (mean) saving money, but look at the bigger picture, too.     4     (reduce) food waste is good for the planet, as it helps slow down     5     (globe) warming. By using up every edible bit of your food, you’re doing your bit to look after the environment.

The average family of four can save just over £60 per month by reducing their food waste.     6     you’re doing the food shop or ordering a meal at a restaurant, every     7     (decide) is an opportunity to save food from the bin. If you don’t want a side salad, ask for your meal     8     it. If you won’t make good use of the extra portion, don’t be tempted by it. And if you can’t finish your main, ask for a doggy bag! Food is made to be loved, so that’s     9     we should do.

We believe that every person has a part     10     (play) in reducing food waste and looking after the planet. The time is now, and the answer is simple: love food, hate waste.

An Oklahoma boy, 11, saved a woman from a house fire on     1     same day he saved a classmate’s life.

Davyon Johnson     2    (perform) the Heimlich manoeuvre (海姆立克急救法) on a classmate choking on a water bottle cap on December 9. He said he learned the Heimlich manoeuvre from watching YouTube videos. “Just     3     case you’re in the situation I was in, you can know     4     you will do,” he said.

He also helped rescue a woman     5    (use) a walker to escape from a house fire that day. “I thought, ‘Oh, she’s not moving fast enough.’ So, I ran across the street and helped her to her truck. It was a disabled lady and she was walking out of her house,” Johnson said. “I thought, being one of the good     6    (citizen), I would help her get into her truck and leave.”

The president of Johnson’s school called     7    (he) a “great hero” and a “kind soul”. “He says that he wants to be an EMT (emergency medical technician). So, he got to put that wish into     8    (act),” he said.

Lying in the west of Henan Province, the northwest of Dengfeng City, Mount Song is one of the Five Famous Mountains in China, and it is also called as Zhongyue, which     1    (mean) middle mountain (among the five mountains). Why does one person get selected for a promotion while others with equal skills, education and experience get passed over? In my opinion, a person’s proven willingness to behave     1     (responsible) is one of the major     2     (reason). In fact, responsibility influences how the leader behaves with subordinates, and it also influences the relationship with an immediate boss and with other departments in the organization.
