In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel of how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easygoing work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but studying and training were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

As the daughter of a truck driver and a secretary, I grew up knowing my mother far better than my father. I was a rebellious teenager. When my mother attempted to guide me, of course I fought every inch of the way. But she never let go, and finally I got rid of those raging hormones and improper behaviors. It was during this time that I learned an important lesson from my father.
One evening on his way home he saw a woman opening her trunk to take out a spare tire. He stopped, introduced himself and began to take over the task of changing the blown-out tire. When Dad finished changing the tire and returning all of the equipment to the trunk of her car, she offered him a $20 bill for his help. He smiled at her and said, “No need. I have a wife and a daughter who just started driving, and my only hope is that if ever one of them breaks down on the side of the road, someone honest and friendly will stop and do for them what I just did for you.” He said good-bye and left.
This was a side of my father I didn’t see often. Instead, throughout my life, my father taught me the rules of the road and life through loud funny stories. I was 24 years old before I realized how much I had really learned from him.
In 1992, as a volunteer I headed to western Kansas to join the “Walk Across America for Mother Earth.” We were almost halfway there when the left back tire blew out. Quite upset, I maintained control of the car and pulled off of I-70 onto the shoulder of the road. As I went into the trunk for the spare tire and the jack, an 18-wheeler went flying past us at top speed. I was positioning the jack when I heard the loud, harsh sound of air brakes across the road.

At four o'clock, I knocked on the Josephs' front door, greeted the kids, and received detailed instructions from their mother. A few minutes later, the girls and I were alone. We played hide-and-seek, did some finger painting together, and I fixed them scrambled eggs (炒鸡蛋) and toast soldiers for dinner. Then, at about eight p, m., I gathered the two kids beside me on the sofa and began to read them a story.
I heard a soft click, as if the front door had been opened, and I stopped. “Go on,” said Melanie, the four-year-old. “Keep reading.” “Wait.” I put my finger to my lips, “I thought I heard someone come in.” I heard the click again, and the lamp beside me switched on. All three of us jumped. Then the drapes (帘子) closed across the big window.
I screamed, put a little girl under each of my arms, and ran upstairs to the bathroom. As I locked the door behind us, I heard music begin to play from a radio somewhere downstairs. The three of us sat on the floor, ears pressed to the wooden door ... listening. Even two-year-old Tricia was very quiet. Then he lowered his massive head and began moving across the field toward the red sweater he saw swinging back and forth beneath the tall tree.
Meanwhile, David was in the barnyard (仓院), feeding the chickens. He looked out and saw his little sister on the swing. “Sisters are a pain in the neck,” he thought. Then suddenly he saw the bull rushing across the field, heading straight for his sister. Without a second thought, David screamed as loudly as he could, “Look out behind you! Get out of there! Run!”

Many organ transplants (器官移植) come from those who are blood relatives or close friends. It’s rare for a person to make a living organ donation to a stranger. Not surprising when you consider the operative risks and other potential problems.
That’s what Paul Wagner thought until he read an article about matchingdonors.com, a website that connects people who need transplants with those willing to be donors (捐赠者), Paul grew up in a poor family and admits to making many mistakes in his youth, including using drugs. “But I always got another chance,” he said. Paul said help came when he needed it most, and because of that, he wanted to give someone else a chance.
That someone turned out to be former opera singer Gail Tomas, who was suffering from kidney (肾) failure and badly needed a new kidney. But her hopes for a donor were so slight because of her O+ blood type. Paul, also type O+, emailed Gail, offering to donate his kidney to her. He said, “It would be wrong of me not to help.” That attitude, however, was not shared by most surgeons, who refused to participate. The surgeon who agreed only did so after long interviews with Paul to be certain about his motivation. The transplant finally took place on National Donor Day.
Afraid that Gail and her family would feel tied to him merely out of appreciation, Paul made it clear to Gail that he didn’t want to get to know her. But Gail insisted on making friends with him and was trying to find an opportunity to break down the barriers to their friendship.

My section leaders had graduated or been forced to drop music classes, leaving me with young, inexperienced kids who couldn’t read music, couldn’t hold their parts, and could sing only a simple melody.
“Maybe we could enter Class B this year,” I suggested, knowing even that would be a near-impossible mission.
“No!” the kids screamed. “Class A!”
I shook my head, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a couple of weeks.
Finally one morning I entered the classroom. “Look at the clock!” I demanded. “We’ve wasted two full minutes because some of you don’t have your music ready. If we are entering the contest in Class A…” The rest of my sentence was lost in screams of delight and applause.
“From now on,” I continued when the noise faded away, “you will find the day’s lesson plan on the board. Be in your seats with your music folders on the desk when the bell rings and sit at attention, ready for warm-ups the instant I’m ready to begin. When I’m working with one section, there will be no talking from the others. You will listen, and you will learn. You will work harder than you’ve ever worked in any class before. A narrow escape
A holiday in Penang is an annual affair for my family. My parents grew up in Penang and are very fond of Penang food. In December every year, we drive up to the island to spend three days visiting their favorite food spots.
This year, we started our journey up north on a Friday morning. The drive was interrupted by stops at Bidor Town and Kampar so it took us six hours to reach our destination. We stayed at one of the hotels in Batu Ferringhi. The beach was just a short walk from the hotel entrance and our rooms had a lovely view of the sea. We spent our first evening playing on the beach. After dinner, we returned to our rooms to play Monopoly. My parents have a rule for our holidays which is that we should spend time doing things together. There was to be no TV and no Internet.
The next morning, we went to Bukit Bendera and then spent the rest of the afternoon in town visiting our favorite hawker stalls (小贩摊位). As we were having tea at a shop, we overheard people talking about an earthquake near Sumatera, an island in Indonesia. But we didn’t care too much. Afterwards we headed back to the hotel and then went to the beach. We took a walk along the beach, picking up seashells along the way. Suddenly, I noticed a strange thing. The sea seemed to be retreating (后退) from the shore. I felt a little uneasy, so I asked my father to look at the curious occurrence. My father took one look and went pale. We saw a grey line in the distance moving towards the shore. It seemed to grow taller by the second. It was a tsunami (海啸)!
