1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In the heart of Daventry, five-year-old Oliver always cherishes tender moments with his mother, Codi Pow, who was a dedicated student nurse in the hospital in the town.

Codi has suffered from high blood pressure since a young age, and grapples with persistent health issues, which could easily trigger potential stroke or heart problems. She still remembers in the winter when her son was three years old, she got an unexpected tooth infection, which worsened dramatically, leaving her in hospital for a week. That tooth infection almost brought an end to her life.

As a student nurse, Codi navigates her daily routine with enormous care. She knows clearly that she should attend to herself well, taking pills on time, curbing her emotions, reducing the -sodium input, and so on. Her doctor’s repeated warnings echo in her mind, emphasizing the need to avoid infection that could lead to severe complications(并发症).

Oliver lives a life no different from other kids in the neighborhood, filled with playful activities, joyous singing, and the routine trips to kindergarten. What sets him apart is that he stands out for his unique passion: health and safety. During playtime, he eagerly absorbs himself in a toy first aid kit and asks his mum about medical things. Oliver has collected a surprising amount of knowledge on health and safety, despite being just five.

One quiet Sunday morning, while preparing breakfast for Oliver, Codi felt it a bit difficult to breathe. She went to the hospital with chest pain, swelling to her neck and a lump in the same area. She had a blood test, chest X-Ray and ECG before being sent home and advised to see her doctor later after she got the test reports.

By 1: 30 in the afternoon, Codi was doing washing in the kitchen while chatting with Oliver when her condition drastically worsened. She felt a high fever, the sign of a possible infection. All of a sudden, she had a blackout, and her legs gave out. She fell onto the kitchen floor like a sack of sand.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

For as long as her parents can remember, 11-year-old Breana Carsey has had this crazy dream. She has always wanted a mommy horse who would give birth to a baby horse, who would then grow up to become a racing champion.

“Absolutely, this was a fairy tale for her from day one. We put it off for five years because we don’t have a farm,” said her father, Brian Carsey, who explained that his daughter has “me wrapped around her finger”.

Her horse was born in the spring of 2013. Breana named it MJB Got Faith for the faith she instantly had in him.

“I really loved him. He’s super soft too,” she said.

But that quick bond posed a real problem for this Dad. See, for whatever reason, Brian thought once he explained to his daughter that her horse could never run in a race—that it was a runt from poor breeding stock—she would just agree to sell it.

“She thought her horse was priceless,” he said. “So I had a chat with my wife and we really got ourselves in a mess here. And I didn’t know how we were going to get out of this. So we took him to the races, the horse that I thought we should have got rid of already.”

Brian was stuck, committed to boarding and training this long shot to end all long shots. And this is not a wealthy family. Brian runs a small company. And Ohio racing, which is harness style racing, is a $900 millionayear industry.

MJB Got Faith was so slow that it was barely even qualified to compete but then somehow won his first race, then his second, third and fourth qualifying him for the state championship held in Columbus, Ohio.

“And I said to my daughter, ‘If you finish third, you should be so thankful,’” Brian remembered. “She said, ‘Daddy, if he finishes last, I’m going to be thankful. But he’s going to win.’”

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea: the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.

Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.

Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake (地震) had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

For weeks, Eva Hachey had fancied adopting a golden Chihuahua with a white spot on its forehead. As a chiropractic(脊椎按摩疗法)assistant, she always believed that there would be a bond between them as strong as one’s spine. “Animals will pick us. ” she often said, “They will come to us. That’s the drive of nature.”

And there he was, at. her local Society for the. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(SPCA), in Fredericton; New Brunswick. The small aninat had been abused severely by his previous owners and was timid. “He’d come to me, then back away and growl, then come back to me again, ” Hachey said. “After 15 minutes, the attendant picked him up and put him in my lap. He started giving me kisses. He stole my heart in that moment.” She adopted the ten-month-old puppy on the spot and named him Bruno.

Bruno lived happily with Hachey and her 28-year-old daughter, Angel Hutchinson, for five months. The two women loved him so dearly that they officially regarded him as a family member. They fed him, walked him and bathed him, who, at an incredible rate, grew bigger and rounder, with joy sparkling in his eyes. But to Bruno, the best part of living with the two women was the “action-and-response” game played between them. Whenever Hachey or Angel made a movement or sign1, Bruno would immediately know what that meant and responded happily, and it always worked.

Then one evening, Hachey, 52, returned home at 8 p. m. from her job. And as usual, she ate supper in front of the TV in the living room. Around 10:30, a friend called just as Bruno went to huddle in his customary spot next to Hachey’s feet, ready to sleep for the night. Hachey and her friend chatted a bit, and then Hachey felt dizzy and had difficulty breathing. A sharp pain struck from her heart and she lost her consciousness.

Obviously sensing something odd, Bruno felt alarmed. His ears standing up, his eyes wide, he rose to his feet.

On the last day before Christmas, I hurried to the stores to buy the remaining gifts I didn’t manage to buy earlier.

Seeing all the people crawling along in the queue there, I started to complain about this annoying Christmas. Nonetheless, I made my way to the toys section. Once I was there, I started to curse at the prices as I wonder if all kids really play with such expensive toys.

While looking in the toys section, I noticed a small boy of about five years old, pressing a doll against his chest. He kept on touching the hair of the doll lovingly and looking at the pricetag. His eyes looked so sad.

Before I knew it, I found myself bending over and asked who he wanted to give the doll to. “It is the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much for this Christmas. She was so sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her.” Still holding the doll in his hands, the boy continued, “but I don’t have enough money.”

I told him that maybe Santa Claus would bring it to her after all and not to worry. However, he replied sadly, “My sister and I are living with Granny. She is a cleaner in a big building and she is working very hard. She tries her best to give food to us.”

My heart nearly stopped. “I told Granny and my little sister that Santa Claus will send gifts to them,” the little boy looked up at me and said, “I prayed to God to help me and I started to save every coin in my pocket half a year ago, so that I could have enough money to buy them each a small gift for Christmas. But now I don’t even have enough for the doll.” He looked at the doll again quietly with sad eyes.

Tears welling up in my eyes, I quickly reached for my wallet and took a few dollars out.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was a cold December, at the tail end of the Great Depression, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community. My father had died five years earlier, leaving us worse off; we relied on social assistance to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were secondhand, we thought they were beautiful.

Looking back, I realized what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. Our rent was $25 a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would move out right after Christmas on the first of January.

The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to $25 for Christmas from social services. It was four days before Christmas. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our back rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while longer.

Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.

What Mom didn’t know was that I had been selling Christmas trees, sweeping snow and doing part-time jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots —boots that weren’t patched; boots with no cardboard in it. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, Pierre Paris boots, and they cost $23.

The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the shopping center for it. On the way, I noticed a grocery store.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My twin sister, Mary, and I lived together for eighteen years before we went to college. We’d known each other so much and always enjoyed shared time. We happily sang and danced together, had dinner and went to bed together, and discussed the maths problems and recited the poems together.

But one small thing couldn’t be shared smoothly and that’s the trouble with toothpaste.

Crest(佳洁士)made us give in and demanded to know what we were made of. You see, Mary likes to carefully fold and roll the toothpaste tube. I like to grab it in the middle and squeeze(挤). I might call her folding a bit too careful. She might consider my squeezing careless and rude. This difference in style may seem mild, but it caused the big trouble in the later days.

At first, it was a little joke. I’d squeeze. She’d roll. Ha, ha. I’d squeeze again. She’d roll again. Annoying. I’d squeeze even when I wasn’t brushing my teeth. She’d slip in to roll, roll, roll.

After slipping and squeezing, tip-toeing and rolling for two weeks, it was unavoidable that we finally met face to face in our tiny pink bathroom with our hands on the toothpaste. We actually yelled at each other. I may have even cried. Why was she so obsessive(过分的)? Why was I so vindictive(报复性的)? Why couldn’t she loosen up? Why couldn’t I calm down? Were we still talking about the toothpaste?

The toothpaste had become more than something to brush our teeth with; it had become a symbol for aspects of our individual personalities that we did not always care to reveal. Maybe I was being a little vindictive. Maybe she was being a bit obsessive. Maybe it really didn’t matter how we dealt with the toothpaste. But maybe it did.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As a little boy, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stonewalls, the house and barn provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me. I was used to the city’s bright and neat living rooms which always seemed to whisper, “Not to be touched!”

I can still remember one afternoon when I was eight years old. Since my first visit to the farm, I’d wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stonewalls surrounding the property. My parents would never approve. The walls were old: some stones were missing, others loose and crumbling (倒塌). Still, my desire to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally, one spring afternoon, I picked up all my courage and entered the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.

“I, uh, I want to climb the stonewalls,” I said hesitantly. Everyone looked up. “Can I climb the stonewalls?” Instantly a sound went up from the women in the room. “Oh, no!” they cried in shock. “Fred, you’ll hurt yourself!” I wasn’t too disappointed; the response was just as I’d expected. But before I could leave the room, I was stopped by my grandfather’s booming voice. “Now hold on just a minute,” I heard him say, “Let the boy climb the stone-walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”
