Ling’s eyes shone brightly as she picked up the mail and spotted a letter with familiar handwriting-her grandmother’s. She eagerly tore open the envelope and unfolded the letter, “Dear Ling,” the letter began, “I miss you a lot after you left. How’s the school life? I hope you are finding joy in your studies and making new friends. Remember, my dear, no matter how challenging things may seem, you can always find a way to deal with them well. Take care and know that you are much loved.” As Ling read through the letter, each word seemed to remind her of the golden days spent in her grandmother’s comfortable village home, surrounded by green fields and rolling hills. Now, living in a big city with her parents, she entered a new school and left her former teachers and classmates. Everything in the city was so unfamiliar that she felt it was difficult for her to adapt to the new life.

The next morning, as Ling struggled through another day of feeling disconnected and alone, she made a decision. She approached her parents with a heartfelt request. “I miss Grandma and our village,” she said. “Could we visit her this weekend?” Her parents, understanding her feelings, agreed and planned a surprise visit for the upcoming weekend. Finally, the happy weekend came. As Ling boarded the bus back to her beloved village, the familiar landscape rolling past her window relaxed her anxious heart.

Ling’s grandmother was initially surprised to see Ling appear at her doorstep suddenly, and embraced her with open arms, quickly putting on a pot of Ling’s favorite tea as they settled into the familiar rhythm of heartfelt conversation. As they drank the tea, the pleasant smell of the tea brought back a flood of precious memories, and Ling shared the details of her new life in the city. Her grandmother listened attentively, her eyes filled with warmth and understanding. Happy time is always so short. Ling and her parents embarked on the journey back. Before going back. Ling saw her father and grandmother whisper something.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Running has always been a big part of my life. It was an easy and cheap way to stay healthy when I was a teenager and at university. As I got older, I kept running though I took on the responsibilities of being a mom, having a job and other hobbies. Running was a fun activity that I could do quickly and then get back to my busy day.

When I moved to a new city, I was excited about trying new foods, visiting new places, meeting new people and having new experiences. But, I also felt lonely and really wanted to make new friends. I joined a book club and a dinner group. But after a few months, I still felt like I hadn’t made any close friends.

One day, someone asked me if I wanted to run in a half marathon. Without thinking, I said, “Sure, count me in!” A half marathon is 13.1 miles, which is a lot longer than the three miles I usually ran. I was a bit scared, but also excited.

After the shock wore off, I started to learn everything about running a half marathon. I even bought my first pair of really good running shoes. They were the most expensive shoes I’d ever owned. I was ready to start training with them.

My new running friends picked me up at my house, and we started to jog together. I took it slow at first, running one mile, then two. They taught me how to run properly and how to drink enough water. I learned new words like chafing, carb loading, strides, and electrolytes. I slowly built up to running three, four and five miles. Running seven miles straight felt like climbing a really high mountain, and I started to love the feeling I got after a long run.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Jeremy was born with a twisted body and a slow mind. At the age of 12 he was still in second grade, seemingly unable to learn. His teacher, Doris Miller, often became extremely angry with him. He would squirm (来回扭动) in his seat and make a lot of noises. At other times, he spoke clearly and distinctly. Most of the time, however, Jeremy just annoyed his teacher.

One day Doris called his parents and asked them to come in for a talk. As the Forresters entered the empty classroom, Doris said to them, “Jeremy really belongs to a special school. It isn’t fair to him to be with younger children who don’t have learning problems.”

Mrs. Forrester cried softly into a tissue, while her husband spoke. “Miss Miller,” he said, “there is no school of that kind nearby. It would be a terrible shock for Jeremy if we had to take him out of this school. We know he really likes it here.” Doris sat for a long time after they had left, staring at the snow outside the window. Its coldness seemed to flow into her soul. She wanted to sympathize with the Forresters. After all, their only child had a serious illness. But it wasn’t fair to keep him in her class. She had 18 other youngsters to teach, and Jeremy was a distraction.

As she thought over the situation, guilt washed over her. Here I am complaining when my problems are nothing compared to that poor family, she thought. From that day on, she tried hard to ignore Jeremy’s noises and his blank stares.

Spring came, and the children talked excitedly about the coming of Easter. Doris told them the story of Jesus (耶稣), and then to highlight the idea of new life, she gave each of the children a large plastic egg. “Now, I want you to take this home and bring it back tomorrow with something inside that shows new life. Do you understand?”

“Yes. Miss Miller,” the children responded enthusiastically — all except for Jeremy. He listened carefully; his eyes never left her face. He did not even make his usual nose.

The next morning, 19 children placed their eggs in the large basket on Miss Miller’s desk.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In a misty morning, Robert was hiking high in the mountains with Lucky, his tiny but energetic dog. Every weekend, the two would go together on a hiking to climb nearby mountains. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After an hour, they reached the top, touched by the beautiful view there. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, Robert felt refreshed. When he looked at the loyal friend beside him, the memory of meeting Lucky for the first time flooded into his mind.

It had been about two years since Robert got Lucky. She was small and a ball of energy. “The day when my mother let me choose a dog from the doghouse, she was playfully jumping around and licking (舔) me, barking (犬吠) loudly to show how much she wanted to be my family,” thought Robert. “She looked quite small, but from the moment I threw my eyes on her, I knew she was the perfect dog for me. And, for some reasons, that active energy was something that I needed in my life,” Robert kept thinking.

Time flew, dark night drawing near. Having got enough rest, Robert decided it was time to go home. Suddenly, Robert lost his balance, rolled down a rocky hill, hit his head really hard, and finally stopped upside down.

One of his leg was in between two rocks, so he couldn’t move. But that was the least of his worries. What Robert was really scared of was that he was going to sleep with a serious head injury. He tried to cry for help, but he was so weak that he was going to become unconscious (昏迷的). “If only there had been someone else,” Robert thought, sad and hopeless. As darkness fell further, the weather turned cold and windy and he was about to lose consciousness. What’s worse, Robert noticed something like a snake approaching him before he finally fell unconscious.

Grace’s father, Mike, couldn’t get out of bed for weeks after her mother died and when he finally did, he had lost his job. As the money ran out, the debt couldn’t be paid. It seemed like some wild beast had jumped onto her dad’s back and was killing him. So Mike sold the house and the beast on his back seemed to go with it.

Luckily, Miss Fay, who was an rich artist, was happy to give her abandoned caravan(大篷车)to them. In return, Mike had to tidy up Fay’s garden and look after her house when she was away.

Mike had once been a famous violin player. He had won competitions and been on television shows. Grace loved to watch how her father played the violin, which made her heart sing. Since her mother had died, however, the violin had stayed still and silent in its case. But now, after moving to the caravan, her father played the violin every day. He even taught Grace to play.

One day, the teacher announced that a talent scout(星探)would come to the school to look for someone to play the violin in the musical Mr Spy. Grace kept quiet because she thought she was not good enough to play for an audience. However, her friend told the teacher she had a violin and could play it.

“Get prepared for it, the talent scout will come next month,” the teacher sad. “And oh, if you are selected, the pay is good!”

After school, Grace kicked at the pebbles angrily along the way. She hated being the centre of attention. There was no way she would play the violin. No amount of money would persuade her.

As soon as she arrived at Fay’s house, Grace saw police officers outside the house. Fay and her dad were talking in low voices and they didn’t look very happy.

“What happened?” asked Grace.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Outside the back of the supermarket, an elderly lady stood in the cold holding a basket of flowers. “Would you like some flowers? They cost $3 a bunch,” she asked me when I was walking past and I politely responded, “No, thank you.” Then I walked away and went inside the supermarket.

I walked around the supermarket searching for the things I needed. I couldn’t help thinking of that lady standing in the cold holding her basket of flowers. I wondered about her unknown story of standing in the cold with her basket.

Then I had my own personal struggles. As a poor blogger (博主), I had to budget for everything and even $3 was a lot for me and probably for her too. But it wasn’t my first thought when she asked me about buying her flowers. My first thought was that I didn’t have the cash but not as an excuse. I’d not carried cash with me for a few years.

When I went to the checkout counter to pay with my card, I asked for $3 cash out. With a sigh of relief, I was glad that the staff member handed me $3. I walked away and I found the lady around the corner of the supermarket.

“Sorry, I didn’t have cash on me just now. But I’d like to buy some of your flowers.”

As I had a closer look in her basket I saw the bunch of flowers I had admired briefly during our first encounter. I also saw two small pots of plants that were beautiful and healthy. Although I didn’t have a green thumb, I loved them deeply. She told me their names and some details about them. I chose the bunch of flowers I had first sighted. I gave her $3 as she handed me the flowers. She said thank you to me.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a cold winter evening, I was terrified that my mom would find out that I had lost the beautiful silver flute (长笛) she bought me. I felt very sad and I thought that she had given me a big lecture about how valuable it was and that I had to take good care of it. Now it was missing! And I felt very upset. I was only ten at the time, so it felt like a huge responsibility. So I didn’t dare tell my mum about it, I didn’t think my mum would pay attention to my flute.

Mum was a soft-spoken woman who never yelled at me, but she would surely have docked (扣除) my allowance (零花钱) for a year or two in order to pay for it if I couldn’t find it and she discovered that my flute was lost. The worst punishment, though, would have been disappointing her and being forever regarded as an unreliable person.

As I was in the band, I would take the flute to school twice and bring it home after practice. That day, I normally remembered collecting it after school and then I rushed through the school gate, I even said bye to the guard. But when I returned home and wanted to take my flute for practice, it was nowhere to be found.

Being afraid to tell anyone, I kept thinking to myself   “I’d be in big trouble if I lost it. What should I do?”

Just then, I heard my mum’s calling, “Sweetie, dinner is ready!”

“Okay, wait a minute, I…am …coming…” I replied as I slowly stepped out of my bed-room, my mind was still back in the state of searching for my flute.

When having dinner, I could hardly focus with my eyes. Although I tried to pretend to be calm, my mum still noticed it.

“What is the matter with you, sweetie?” my mum asked.

Hearing what she said, I had to tell her the truth.

One day, Gina received a smartphone. But she didn’t know how to use it. So Gina went to her daughter’s house to ask her grandson, Josh, for help.

When seeing Josh, Gina asked him for help. “Sorry Grandma. I have to leave for baseball now,” Josh answered from the sofa, his eyes locked on his own phone. Then he stood up, took his baseball bag, and left. Over the next few days, Gina went to see Josh several times. However, Josh always had something to do, giving excuses such as going to the movies.

Gina finally understood Josh actually didn’t want to help her. She stopped asking him. She turned to some friends for help. Before long, she learned how to use her phone to read stories, communicate with friends, etc.

Later, on a Monday evening, Gina visited her daughter, Oona. They happily talked when Josh was making dinner. Suddenly, they heard Josh crying out. Oona rushed towards the kitchen. Gina followed and found Josh’s hands burned by hot water by accident. “Mom, I think we need to go to the hospital,” Oona said. “Yes, I’ll drive,” Gina said.

At last, the doctor said Josh would be fine after a few days, but his hands would be bandaged (用绷带包扎). Josh was also advised not to go to school for some days so he could rest and get better soon. Oona asked Josh’s best friend to tell him his homework.

On Wednesday, Josh was alone at home. His grandma came to help make lunch for him, because he couldn’t use his hands. While Gina was cooking, Josh wanted to check his homework. His friend had sent his homework assignment to his phone through emails and text messages. But Josh couldn’t operate his phone. He realized he had to ask his grandma to help him out.

And he suddenly remembered he had refused to help his grandma when she asked for help with her phone. He was regretful and afraid she wouldn’t help him. But he decided to have a try.
