1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Shama was sitting in the bedroom which she shared with her sister Dolly, watching the goldfish Peepy in the glass bowl. The goldfish swam round and round. For a while Shama did nothing except stare at it. The fish looked sad, Shama thought. It seemed unhappy being in the small bowl.

Just then she heard her mother call her and her sister Dolly for breakfast. Shama said to her mother. “It’s Sunday today.I want to go to the lake. We go there on every Sunday.”

“We can’t go today, dear. A storm is coming. It’s dangerous.” Mom was always like that, concerned about safety of her kids. Shama made a face. Breakfast was over. Shama watched her mother washing the dishes. She loved the rushing sound of water. That was why she loved the lake too.

Mom said she didn’t feel well and wanted to have a sleep. She had gone to her bedroom.

“Shama,” Dolly whispered, leaning as close to Shama as possible. “Let’s go.”

“Where?”

“To the lake, where else?” This was a surprise for Shama. It was a daring suggestion.

“Mom doesn’t want us. There’s a storm coming.” Shama said in a whisper.

“No, there isn’t. Mom just doesn’t want us to go. Let her be fast asleep; then we’ll tiptoe out.” Hearing that, Shama’s face broke into a smile.

“Are you sure? Mom will be mad if we get caught.”

“We’ll come back in time. Mom ‘sleeps tight.” Dolly, gave a naughty smile.

It would be an adventure that both of them would slip out. It was a really exciting idea. Shama had never done such a thing. before.

But the fact was that the door was locked by Mom. Dolly ran towards the window. The window wasn’t locked. She smiled and said,“That’s great!”

Dolly got back into her room and a few minutes later, she came out, holding a plastic bag filled with water. Peepy the goldfish was in it.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Life never really turns out the way we expect it to. We have dreams and expectations. And dream-come-true stories are everywhere — except, it may seem, in our own lives.

As a child, Barbara never quite found the bond with her parents that all children need. Her father left the family early, and her mother did menial jobs.

“I couldn’t let my life keep me from caring about other people,” she says. “Maybe it’s unfair or just the way it turns out for people, but I still have a son.”

Barbara raised her son the best she knew how and “he turned out pretty well,” she says, smiling. And after the hard years of making ends meet and giving him a good start, she made a career change.

“I never thought I was supposed to feel sorry for myself,” she says. “And I like people.”

Barbara works as an in-home caregiver for elderly people in their last year of life. She spends 10-hour days, six days a week, with people who have Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, sometimes sleeping on their sofa when they are afraid to spend a night alone. Most don’t have families close by, and Barbara becomes the person they rely on for everything: meals, bathing, bathroom duties, daily walks if they can, mental exercises like crossword puzzles and re-learning family faces.

She only charges what the family can afford and only works with one client at a time. “They become the family I never had, over and over again,” she says, laughing.

The spaces left empty in Barbra’s childhood are filled with memories shared with her from lives fading away in the dusk. For 30 years, she has been making people feel good at a time when most would just be waiting to die, alone and unnoticed. When seeing their faces when they are with Barbara, you’d think the last years were the best.

“I’ve found something I never had,” Barbara says. “We make each other happy. So I try to give them what they want most.”

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Fifty years ago, we saw a house in the South Farmingdale, North Massapequa area. The house is located on the ground floor. It is not only well lit, but also has a small garden. My husband and I fell in love with the house. The price was within our reach. Without hesitation we made our decision to buy it.

But there was one problem. It was a corner property. We both agreed there had to be a fence. So after moving in, my husband put up a fence and I painted it white.

How times flies! There have been many changes in our lives since that fence went up. My four children often enjoyed themselves in the garden. Our family had a happy family life in the garden. Now my four children have grown up and moved out. Most of the old neighbours have been replaced with new ones. It was last week that a young couple moved in next door to me. They have three children. Some of them go to school. Sometimes they play in the yard. When I saw their happy family, I felt as if I had gone through decades ago.

However, the fence remains, and at the moment, so do I. The fence has been repaired more often than I can remember. Most times a broken board or two was suddenly repaired. During the past ten years, it has been repainted professionally.

But more seriously, the white fence had turned green with mildew (霉菌). The boards were too old to paint. So this spring I had it rebuilt and repainted. I was satisfied with the rebuilt and repainted fence because it brought me back to my happy memory.

In a week, however, I was shocked to discover that a part of it was destroyed. A post (桩) was broken and some boards were left lying on the ground.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One holiday, my cousins and I decided to play a trick on my grandma. We planned to do it —not because we didn't like her. She was the sweetest grandma a kid could ever have, and we really loved her. We decided to play the trick just wanting to have some fun. And at that time, to our mind, it was just a harmless little kids' trick.

Early in the evening of that holiday, we began our trick. We secretly walked up to her doorstep with a can of red paint. Grandma was hard of hearing. So we didn't have to worry about being very quiet. Every time we thought about how funny it would be to see Grandma try to pick up a gift that was just painted on her doorstep, we couldn't stop laughing. It didn't take long to finish painting the gift two red roses. It wasn't very artistic. But for us little farm kids and an old woman with poor eyesight, it would do.

As soon as we were satisfied with the painting, we knocked on the door and ran to hide behind bushes and trees to watch the fun. There was a lot of giggling going on as we waited for Grandma to open the door. When she finally appeared, she stood in the doorway for a minute. She looked into the darkness, with her gray hair pulled back tightly into her usual style, wiping her hands on her usual white apron. And she said, “Who could be knocking at my door this hour of the night?” Hearing it, my stomach and cheeks ached from trying to hold back the laughter. Then she looked down at her doorstep. Even from fifteen meters away, we could see the joy that shone in her eyes when she spotted the red gift at her feet.

“Oh, how wonderful!” she called out happily. “A holiday gift for Grandma! I thought I was going to be forgotten again this year!”

A Sepcial Christmas Gift

December 1st. Always on that day, Mom would softly announce, “It’s time.” When we heard those words, we all knew was time to write our letters to Santa. So, we began our special letters. Jimmy asked for a baseball. Wilbur like anything to do with art. This was my letter to Santa.

My Mom and Dad say I have been very good this year. I only want two toys this year. But what I want most is a dog. I have been asking for one all year. Mom and Dad say we can’t afford to feed an animal right now. It makes me sad, but it’s alright. Maybe next year Mom will say it’s OK. That’s all, Santa. Say hi to Mrs. Claus. And Merry Christmas.

Love, Sheila

The next morning we would walk three blocks to the large red, white and blue mailbox on the corner of Stimson and Forth. It was a special mailbox, only for letters children wrote to Santa.

Christmas Eve finally arrived. I was so excited that I found it difficult to fall asleep. But sleep finally came and so did Christmas morning. I woke up hearing my brothers down the hall shouting at my Mom and Dad. “Wake up! Wake up! Santa came! Come on! Come on!” Jimmy came running and jumping on my bed. “Santa’s been here! Come on! Let’s open presents!”

We all ran downstairs. Our eyes were shining like wildfire as we eyed over plenty of presents under the tree. Then Dad handed out the gifs one at a time. I kept watching as my brothers unwrapped gift after gift. Dad said, “This year you are going to be last to get your presents, because you are the oldest.” I didn’t think anything of it but nodded.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My aunt Sandy is a very kind-hearted woman. She loves animals so much that she found a job in an emergency vet clinic(兽医诊所)after graduating from college. There she could help a lot of injured pets.

One day, a rescue worker brought in a homeless cat. The cat had numerous injuries and needed immediate medical aid. No one in the vet clinic wanted to rescue the cat but Sandy. All the others didn't think the cat would survive. And they suggested putting the cat to death.

But Sandy didn't want to give up. She always believes that every animal deserves a chance. Holding the cat in her arms, she was determined to rescue her.

Sandy was good at treating injured animals. Thanks to her, the cat survived. She took good care of the cat and she gradually recovered. However, it wasn't the end of the story. Because of the operation performed on her face, the cat always wore a sad expression and looked really ugly. Those who came to the clinic to adopt pets didn't want her.

The staff at the vet clinic suggested getting rid of the cat. But Sandy didn't agree. She wanted to adopt the cat herself, but there was a problem—her husband was allergic(过敏)to cats. So Sandy couldn't take her home.

Thinking the cat might have to be homeless, Sandy was very sad. She had tried very hard to rescue her so she didn't want to lose her. She tried to persuade people around her to adopt the cat, but they didn't show any interest in such an ugly cat.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成篇完整的短文。

December 5, 2012, was a very special day for Josephine and Scott Lansing, as it marked the fourth adoption for the Lansings.

When they began the journey to adopt their first daughter, Cloe, years ago, Josephine and Scott Lansing never imagined they would eventually have a house full of girls. The couple later adopted Josie in 2011 and Annabelle in 2012. For the Lansing family, adoption is about giving every child the opportunity to grow healthily in a loving home. Scott and Josephine are great advocates for each of their daughters, and they make sure each child knows how special and loved they are.

In February of 2009, Bethany entered into the care of Child Protective Services due to her mother's inability to care for her and her brothers and sisters. Her experiences made it very difficult for her to trust adults, since she learned from an early age that she could only count on herself. She lived in a shelter for several months before moving into a foster home (寄养家庭). Still, Bethany struggled to understand why she had been taken away from the only family she had known. In May of 2010, Bethany was placed at Helping Hand Home for Children's Residential Treatment Center, where her journey to returning to normal finally began. With the patience, support, and guidance of the Helping Hand Home staff, Bethany developed healthy, appropriate ways to express her emotions. She was taught to respect herself, and she learned that it was okay to trust others.

When Bethany was introduced to the Lansing family in June of 2012, the meeting did not go as smoothly as everyone hoped. Bethany's insecurities resurfaced due to the suffering she experienced at such a young age, and she refused to talk or even look at the Lansings at their first meeting.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My dad doesn’t write me letters. And he doesn’t always remember my birthday or wedding anniversary -- or even how old I am sometimes.

But I only need to look around me to be reminded of his love. He restored a 100-year-old rocking chair after I told him how much I wanted one. When I moved into my first apartment, he spent his weekends in a small space replacing pipes. And when I lost a blue stone from a favorite necklace, he worked his magic with common stuff

The four greatest words I know are “Dad will build it”.

I could never forget when I was seven, one day we walked by a toy store window. There in the corner was the most unusual doll house had ever seen. It was shaped like an upturned log. Little oval windows were cut into it decorated with white curtains and framed by tiny balconies.

“Oh, Daddy,” I said, “isn’t it beautiful? Do you think Santa Clause will bring it to me?”

Dad looked at the $100 price tag -- too high a figure in those days. “I think even Santa couldn't afford this house,” he joked, hiking up his belt, as he often does when he’s nervous. “Maybe one day, sweetheart, ”Dad probably hoped I’d forget about the doll house, but I kept talking about it.

On Christmas morning, I awoke early and raced downstairs. In the faint light, I made out some wrapped boxes under the tree-- but none large enough to contain my doll house.

Dad could see my disappointment.

Four months later, a beautiful doll house was in front of me.

It was a Saturday. Usually, Aman would be out playing with his friends. But today, he was busy in the kitchen. Since his mother was unwell, Aman had taken her place, preparing simple meals for his family. His little sister, Neelam, was the happiest.

“Aman, the dish you prepared for my lunch yesterday was so tasty that all my friends ate it up within minutes. I had to make do with eating their lunches,” said Neelam.

“Ha ha! Next time, remind me to prepare some extra for your friends as well,” said Aman. “I am happy that you have taken over the kitchen duties now. Imagine having to eat Dad’s boring food for a whole week, like the bread he used to make for us last year when Mom had gone out of town! said Neelam.

Dad, who had just walked into the kitchen, overheard Neelam’s words and asked in mock (假装的) anger, “Who is complaining (抱怨) about my cooking skills?”

“Not complaining, Dad, just kidding,” said Neelam.

The three laughed. Aman then prepared tea for his parents and served it to them.

“Thank you, Aman, for helping Dad with the housework while I have been unwell,” said Mom. “I hope it has not been too much trouble for you. Hope you are not missing out on your schoolwork because of this.”

“Don’t worry, Mom. You just relax. I have more than enough time to study in the evenings,” said Aman.

In a couple of days, Aman’s mother felt better and took over the kitchen duties.

Aman continued to help around the kitchen by cutting the vegetables and preparing the soup. Mom taught him a few new recipes (菜谱). Even Neelam helped with whatever little she could like washing the vegetables and peeling (削皮) potatoes.

“Aman, now that I am well, you should start focusing on your studies again,” said Mom.

“I love cooking, Mom. It is fun and also helps me relax before I sit down to study,” replied Aman.
