1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Karl was Fred’s son. When his son was little, Fred’s wife passed away, so a mountainous responsibility landed on Fred’s shoulders. Fred was fond of and cared about his son so much that he raised his son with all his heart and soul. He taught him to walk, talk, read and write. He also taught him how to be a true and moral man. When Karl came home with an injury due to falling off his bike or something else, it would hurt Fred’s heart more than it would hurt the boy. Whenever Karl went down with a fever, Fred would sit beside him day and night, barely sleeping a wink (合眼). He always supported Karl in every aspect. Gradually, Karl grew up to become an adult.

How deeply Fred loved his son! However, Fred was unprepared for the day when his beloved son Karl told him he would leave and start his own business in a new city.

“But, Karl, you are too young to start a business,” Fred warned his son. “You still have a long way to go. I think you can help me manage the cafe my grandma left to me first. This way, I’d be able to teach you more about business.” But Karl was stubborn and wouldn’t follow Fred’s advice. “Dad, I am not a kid anymore, so allow me to determine my life. OK?” said Karl. One week later, Karl packed his things and left for the new city, leaving the sad and worried father behind.

Three months passed. One night, Fred got a call from his son. It was strange because Karl seldom called him up after he left for the new city. “Dad, I should have followed your suggestions and stayed at home. I went bankrupt (破产的) and I am in debt now,” Karl said. “I knew this would happen someday,” Fred painfully thought. He planned to help his son and made one of his most difficult choices. “Don’t worry, my son. Luckily, you will succeed to (继承) a huge amount of money from your uncle, soon,” Fred told Karl.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I still remember what I felt on a bright Saturday morning in late September, at a five-kilometer race in Clarkston, Georgia.

It was an unusual morning. About an hour earlier, when we drove into town to participate in the race, my 11-year-old son noticed a green tree cricket(蟋蟀) on my car. It was friendly, no longer than a fingernail. It jumped onto my son’s finger, and walked across my shirt, and then went back to my son’s hand, where it stayed so long that we eventually gave it a name: Little Friend.

The walk from the car to the registration table was perhaps a quarter of a mile. Little Friend stayed with my son. Then, we walked back across the railroad tracks and waited for the race to start. A few minutes before the race, Little Friend either fell or jumped off my son’s hand and landed on the sidewalk. Maybe it wanted to go free. But this was not a good place for that. Pedestrian(行人) traffic was heavy, so Little Friend was in danger. My son knelt and reached out his hand. It came back.

The race was about to start, and the tiny green insect was in for a wild ride. My son would run fast, and the race would be long. The race began. I ran well enough, and felt excited at the finish line. But that thrill gave way to anxiety when my son didn’t show up.

I knew he could run 5 kilometers in about 30 minutes. When I didn’t see him at the 35-minute mark, I began to wonder what had gone wrong. And as the 40-minute mark approached and he still didn’t appear, I went out looking for him. Had he got lost? I crossed the railroad tracks and looked down a long straightaway, hoping to see his face. Finally, there he was, just ahead of the 45-minute mark.

3 . 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was 8 a.m. Kathy,a 25yearold nurse, had just finished a 2hour night shift at a hospital. She was tired, but glad to be sailing along highway to where she lived. Although the local government had posted a snow alert (预警), the calm grey sky convinced Kathy the drive would be safe. “I figured I'd be in bed in an hour,” she said.

Snow began when she was halfway home. Listening to the radio, Kathy learned the highway was closed because a tractor had slid off the road. She texted some friends and her mom, and tried not to sleep as she waited.

After a couple of hours, however, conditions worsened. Strong winds began rocking Kathy's car. She couldn't see anything outside, and snow was drifting up her doors. “It was”, she said, “a total white out and rows of cars and trucks”.

Late in the afternoon a police officer came and asked if she was in any difficulty. She said she was fine. She asked the police officer if there was any way to get past the trucks. “No, ma'am,” he answered. “You're not going anywhere.”

As it got dark, Kathy began to worry. She texted his brother Cris, telling him to drive snowmobiling buddy (雪地汽车) to get to the highway and find her.

As Cris rode slowly alongside the rows of cars and trucks, people would roll down their windows and ask for help. But Cris didn’t stop. He explained he was picking up his sister. He told them, “Nobody's coming and I can't take you.”

Near 10 p.m. Cris reached Kathy. He directed Kathy to pull her car onto the roadside and asked her to get into his snowmobiling buddy.

As they headed for home, the fun started. About five kilometres into the journey, Cris made a mistake. What he thought was a shallow ditch (浅沟) turned out to be a deep trough (水槽). Instead of coming out the other side, they just kept going down. They were trapped. And feathery snow was over their heads.

At that moment, they had to take action to get out of the deep trough.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Monday started out great. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my math test that day. I was confident that I would get a high mark. I left my house, and minutes later, I was sitting with my friends on the school bus. We were busy talking about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, a boy named Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped (绊倒) over someone’s foot and fell flat onto the floor.

Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan picked himself up, dusted his jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. It wasn’t long before the lunch bell rang. I met my friends from the cheer leading team in the dining hall.

When we finished eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. After much practice, we finally managed to do the cheer perfectly. We decided to practice it again one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch. I felt my jeans were torn down in the middle of my backside.

I froze (僵住了). I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my torn jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.

Mama’s Soup Pot

There are too many treasures in life we take for granted, the worth of which we don’t fully realize until they’re pointed out to us in some unexpected way. So it was with Mama’s soup pot.

Mama’s soup was special because there was no recipe for it. It had been so since her girlhood in Italy, where she learned its secret from her grandma, who had inherited (继承) it from generation to generation. Also, it was a symbol of security. For our large immigrant family, Mama’s soup guaranteed we would never go hungry. And we could judge our economic conditions by its contents.

At one time, however, Mama’s soup pot became a source of embarrassment to me, for I feared it would cost me a new friend I had made at school. Sol was an unusual pal for me because his father was a doctor and they lived in the best part of our town. Often Sol invited me to his home for dinner, where I found the food was good but tasteless, lacking the heartiness of the one served from my mom’s flame-blackened pots. Moreover, the atmosphere matched the food and everything was so formal. Sol’s mother and father were polite, but the conversation around the table was not natural, which made me a little depressed. And no one hugged!

In my family, warm hugs were a constant-men, women, boys and girls-and if you didn’t kiss your mother, she demanded: “What’s the matter? You sick?” But at that time in my life, all this was an embarrassment.

I had known Sol would like to eat dinner at my house, but that was the last thing I wanted. My family was so different. No other kids had such pots on their stoves, nor did they have a mama whose first action upon seeing you enter the house was to sit you down with a spoon and bowl.

One day, Sol pointedly asked if he could come to my house. I had to say yes.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Daisy was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.

She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of the scolding (指责) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand (摊位) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing her business. However, with no money in hand, she had to leave. The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want some noodles?”

“Oh, yes…, but I don’t have money on me…”she replied.

“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the woman, “come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell of which was so attractive. As she was eating, Daisy cried silently.

“What is it?” asked the woman kindly.

“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Daisy as she dried her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so cruel compared to a stranger!”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?”

Daisy sat there eating the noodles, speechless. She remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered (饱经风霜的) hands. “Why did I stranger made me feel thankful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.” On the way home, Daisy made up her mind to make an apology (道歉) to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At an early age, Bob was repeatedly told by his mother Markita, “Believe in yourself no matter what happens.” When Bob was 12, his mother traveled with him in a car. Slowly night fell. Bob was asleep in the front seat of the car. As Markita drove carefully down the winding dirt road, she turned onto a narrow bridge. As she did, the car hit a rock and ran off the road, and the right front wheel got stuck. Fearing the car would tip over, she attempted to drive it back onto the road by pressing hard on the gas pedal (油门) and turning the steering wheel (方向盘) to the left. But Bob’s foot got caught between his mother’s leg and the steering wheel and she lost control of the car.

The car rolled over and hit a deep valley. Bob could hardly get his breath back. “What happened, Mama?” he asked. “Our wheels are pointing toward the sky.”

Markita was blinded by blood. She was too painful to move and cry for help. “I’ll get you out, Mama,” said Bob, who had luckily escaped injury. He managed to get out of the car through the open window and tried to pull his mother out. But she couldn’t move. “Just let me sleep,” replied Markita, who seemed to be out of consciousness (意识). “No, Mama,” Bob continued. “You can’t sleep.”

Bob reached her mother and tried to pull her out of the car, but failed. He then told her he'd climb up to the road and stop a car to get help. Fearing that no one would be able to see her little boy in the dark, Markita refused to let him go alone. Instead, Markita did her best to open the door. She moved inches at a time. The pain was so great that Markita wanted to give up, but Bob wouldn’t let her.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It has been another long, hard winter here in the mountains of my home. High winds, heavy snows, freezing cold, and heavy rains have all hit us, causing damage to people, power lines, and even the trees around here. And today, as I look at the broken branches filling my daughter’s yard, memories from another hard winter several years ago flood me.

It was a day of dark clouds and bitter wind, and soon it began to rain. The rain was falling more and more heavily, and the wind blew wildly. You could see only a few meters on the road. At this moment, I was at work, looking through the window at the rain. I began to worry about how I would drive home from work. Luckily, the rain stopped before I finished my work.

It rained heavily for hours. The rainwater from the hills made the rivers full, filled the fields and formed water holes in the road. In addition to this, broken and fallen tree branches were everywhere.

I was driving home. Suddenly, I saw one of these branches had broken off a tree hanging above the road and fallen across it. It was big enough to crash my car, so I slowed down my car and turned on my emergency flashing lights.

Thankfully, there were no other cars there yet, but I knew that it would only be a matter of time before one crashed into that branch, maybe causing an injury or even a death. I quickly got out of my car and tried to pull the branch to the side of the road.

Just as I did, though, a little red car raced around me, hit a pool of water in the road and made my trousers dirty with rainwater.
