1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Edward walked slowly past the school blacktop where his older brother, Leon, was playing basketball with his friends. Leon didn’t notice Edward until he turned to shoot the ball. Leon really loved basketball and was good at it. But Edward was another story.

Edward would beg to play with them but Leon’s friends complained a lot. For some reason, in that last game, Edward’s playing was worse than ever. He couldn’t do anything right. He was completely unable to keep possession of the ball. He missed even the easy rebounds. His dribbling was useless, and none of his throws were anywhere near the basket. Leon had to turn his brother away.

Edward was always a whiz at math. He was so advanced that he already knew how to solve long division problems before he was taught in school. Word problems, even the complicated ones with several steps, were no problem.

One day, Leon’s math teacher, pulled him aside. “ You need to do better, a lot better, or you’re not going to pass this class. There’s a big test coming up. ”

Leon’s heart sank. When he got home, he talked with Edward about it. The boys agreed that over the next two weeks they intended to spend an hour each day after school working on math problems and then an hour playing basketball.

“Here is a good one,” Edward said and pointed to a word problem. “ Why don’t you read it?”

Leon looked at the book for several seconds. “ I’m dizzy already!” He exclaimed.

“Do you know what the first step is?” asked Edward, “The first step is to stay cool and focused.” Edward talked Leon through the problem. “Think about what you need to find out. Don’t let the problem trick you.” Step by step, together they figured it out and got the right answer. Leon soon discovered that Edward was really good at helping him.

Paragraph1.

Soon it was time for basketball practice.

Trust

“Settle down!” Mr. Taylor was trying to calm the boys with a loud voice. The moment they entered the gym and saw the climbing walls towering over them, the boys got excited and started making noises. But Stevie was an exception, who was standing aside looking at his thin arms silently. Stevie didn’t like climbing. It wasn’t his thing. Getting along with people wasn’t his thing, either. He just felt nobody liked or trusted him at school.

Then came the coach, who taught the boys some basic skills. He said everyone should have a climbing partner and showed them how to belay (保护) their partner. “If you are a climber, trust your belayer and challenge yourself. Belayers, please remember that your partner’s life depends on you.”

The moment he finished, the boys couldn’t wait to match themselves with a partner except Stevie, who was left alone wandering around the gym. Noticing his embarrassment, Mr. Taylor raised his voice and said, “I need someone I can really trust to team up with!” He looked around. Then his gaze fell upon Stevie. “How about you, Stevie? Would you like to be my belayer?” “Me?” Stevie widened his eyes, surprised to hear Mr. Taylor even say his name. He had thought he was invisible. “I guess,” Stevie managed a weak smile.

Nervous as he was, he plucked up courage. “It doesn’t matter who gets to the top first. It’s about giving it a go.” Hearing Mr. Taylor’s words, Stevie gritted (咬紧牙关) his teeth and moved up slowly, his face pressed against the rough surface. “Done it!” Stevie finally called from the top with excitement. Then Mr. Taylor started to let him down through a perfect control of the rope.“Well done,” said Mr. Taylor when Stevie landed on the floor.

Now it’s Stevie’s turn to control the rope. Bearing in mind his responsibility, Stevie carefully watched as Mr. Taylor climbed up, pulling in the rope hand over hand. He felt his heart racing wildly. Finally, Mr. Taylor arrived at the top. “Ready to let me down now?” said Mr. Taylor. “Okay,” Stevie took a deep breath, his palms sweating uncontrollably.

Willie’s 11th birthday was coming. His aunt sent him a birthday present—a small nice notebook. There was a place in it for a pencil. Willie valued it a lot and always kept it in his pocket. When he found something interesting, he would write it down in the book.

One afternoon, after Willie came back from school, he called his best friend, Caper, a well-trained shepherd dog and said, “Come, Caper! Let’s go out and have fun.” They went to the pasture field (牧场) to catch the butterflies and there they found a shaft (通风井), which seemed to be deserted for a long time. Willie sat down on the edge of the shaft, bending over to see how deep it was. Suddenly, he lost his balance and fell in. “Help! Help!” Willie called desperately. But no response at all. He was so far away from the house. He made several attempts to climb up the shaft but again he failed! Now Willie was exhausted and frustrated. When Caper saw his master falling into the shaft, the little good companion ran round and round, reaching down and trying to pull him out. Unfortunately, a piece of rock gave way under his feet, and he fell in the shaft too!

It was getting dark. When Willie’s mother, Mrs. Lee came back from work and found there was no one at home, she was anxious and worried. Without any clue at home, she decided to look for Willie outside. She went to all the trees under which Willie was in the habit of playing, but he was nowhere to be found. By this time, the sun had gone down. A feeling of panic took hold of Mrs. Lee. She comforted herself that Willie might have come back. She rushed back, hoping to find her son at home.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I live in a small but lovely neighborhood. Our house is neither large nor luxurious, but it has a fairly big garden. My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it and took good care of the plants, watering them, applying fertilizer, weeding and getting rid of bugs. He was never tired of doing all that stuff. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.

Unfortunately, in the summer vacation before senior high school, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn’t take care of the garden. I didn’t want my father to worry. I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn’t think much about the garden.

One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce (生菜) leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!

I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest supermarket to buy some vegetables. When I was making the salad, my mother came home and saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed and admitted, “Dad would like a salad, but the garden is a disaster. I don’t want to disappoint him, so I went to the store and bought some vegetables.” My mother smiled, saying, “Honey, you know what is the right thing to do.”

Paragraph 1

My father seemed very pleased when I took the salad to him.

It was about 10 o'clock on Friday morning and the skies were clear. It was a rare holiday for Matt Wilkinson who was a professional surfer and his best friend John, a professional swimmer. They were paddling on their boards near Sharpes Beach in Australia.

“It’s a nice and beautiful holiday. Wilkinson, let’s have a surfing competition. Although I am a swimmer, I am also a potential surferJohn said to Wilkinson when they had a break on the shore. “Come on! I’m full of confidence.” John held his surfboard and then walked towards the ocean. Wilkinson had to agree with his friend and carried his surfboard walking slowly after John. When these two friends were preparing in the ocean, Wilkinson looked around and said to John, “John, I heard a splash and a strange noise.” Wilkinson looked around again but couldn’t see anything. “Come on, let’s begin,” John said.

What these two friends didn’t know was that a shark quickly surfaced and began stalking the surfing world champion, at one point only inches away. But one person saw the shark. That was Beau Monks. Drone operator Beau Monks was using a drone to observe the waters when he saw the animal, which appeared to be more than 6 feet long. Beau Monks followed it and caught the scene in the video. The shark sort of came out of nowhere and then it went right up to Wilkinson. It moved pretty fast. Within 10 seconds it was at the surfer and it was going to hurt Wilkinson's leg. But five seconds later, it was gone. Beau Monks immediately informed the lifeguards and everyone on the beach.

“Attention, attention, please! There is a shark. Please get off the ocean as soon as possible,” Beau Monks used the speaker on the drone to get everyone out of the water.

Once in a village lived a young sculptor (雕刻师), who used to make very beautiful statues and by this he earned a good income.

He had a son who started making statues from his childhood, and his son could make good statues. Father would be happy with his son's work but every time he would point out one or other mistakes in his son's work,

Still his son never complained and continued to improve his work, following the advice of his father. Because of Son's continuous improvement, his work started becoming better than his father's. Then came a time when people started to pay more money for his statues than his father's.

Son got young and was earning better but his father continued to point out mistakes in his son's work. Now Son didn't like it. He couldn't accept his shortcoming and didn't work wholeheartedly.

Then one day, Son lost his patience and said, “You are pointing out my mistakes as if you were a big sculptor. But if that's the case then your statues would have sold at higher price than mine. I don't think I need your advice anymore. My statues are perfect.”

After that day, Father stopped giving any advice or pointing out any mistakes in his statues.

Dave had loved basketball for as long as he could remember and he had never had a day without playing it. At primary school and junior high school he joined basketball clubs, attended training programs and watched basketball games, from which he learned the moves of the star players, wishing to play in a professional team like them and shine on the court.

Now as a senior high school student, however, his dream of becoming a professional player was dimming (变暗) because he was only of average height. He had to give up the hope of joining the school team. The guys on the school team were all tall boys who played matches and won honors for the school. They were like heroes. Dave watched them play and cheered them but he knew he would never be one of them.

Dave felt it a pity not to be tall enough, but this didn’t stop him from pouring his passion into basketball. He just played for the love of the sport. He played in the school gym with other boys or by himself every day, even during holidays and weekends, when it was open for two hours in the morning. He enjoyed every minute on the court making every effort to play better.

It was one Saturday morning. Dave was playing in the gym by himself, as all the other boys were busy with other weekend affairs. Then he noticed a tall boy approaching. It was Lankas. Everybody knows him as captain of the school basketball team. “Hi, Lankas,” Dave greeted him. “My name is Dave.” “Hi, Dave,” Lankas replied as he got closer. “Nice to see you here. Do you need an opponent to play against?” Dave was shocked, frozen right there, unable to believe his ears but somehow, he answered, “Why not?”

8 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成 一篇完整的短文。

I yawned (打哈欠)as I got off the last step of the bus. I had woken early that morning, and had not been able to sleep on the long ride from Riverside High, thinking about that day’s race, the Eye Opener. I had never raced in a state-wide race before. Over thirty high school teams ran, along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the bus, and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently.

“Start warming up,” our coach told us, roughly forty-five minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches, we headed over to the starting line, eager for the race to begin.

The starter walked to the middle of the field. “There will be two commands,” his voice boomed, ‘‘Runners set, then the gun. If you hear another shot, return to the starting line to start again. ” My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race.

“Runners set!” the starter shouted Bam! The gun fired, and he rushed out of our way. Adrenaline (肾上腺素)rushed through my body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first turn, my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then, in what felt like only one minute, I arrived at the one mile mark.

“6’10”, a man declared as I ran by. I tried to ignore him, but my legs began to burn as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go. I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three. Minutes later, I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one more time. Just as I almost reached my limit, a boy passed me. He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Almost all of my holidays were spent with my grandpa. My grandpa was a retired army officer and the years in the army had made him a very tough person, which helped him a lot in fighting with cancer for a long time. Silver and golden stars on his shoulders and medals on his chest in grandma’s old photo albums reflected the marks of his distinguished service and numerous adventures. Grandpa had fine qualities and was a real personality. He was strict with his family, me included, as well as himself.

In our ancestral house there was a big pond as was common in bygone Bengali homes with lots of trees and bushes. Both my grandparents were fond of our so-called garden. One morning our new neighbor saw my grandpa planting two trees on both sides of our main gate, which still stand tall today. Across the street our new neighbor also got the same kind of tree and planted the trees exactly on both sides of his gate too.

My grandpa didn’t often give enough amount of water to his plants and didn’t always give his full attention to them, while our neighbor gave a lot of water to his plants and looked after them too well. My grandpa’s plants were simple but looked good. But our neighbor’s plants were much fuller and greener.

Normally, during April and May, we have short but violent thunderstorms called “Kalboishakhi”. One late evening during a Kalboishakhi we had showers with strong winds, which continued right throughout that night. Next morning along with my grandparents I came out to inspect the damage to our garden. I saw our neighbor was there in his garden too, but looked upset as his plants were uprooted. But, our plants were not damaged and were standing firm on the ground.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Back in the day when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, I was studying to become a firefighter. I was a volunteer fire aide in New York, and was studying at Mission College. As a firefighter, you should always think of other people and try to help other people.

One night after going to class, I was walking home and decided to stop off at a fast food restaurant. I lived in an apartment alone near my college so most of the time I used to get a take-out, I got my food and started to head home when a homeless man walked to me. He looked 20 or so. He was very dirty and obviously very hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea.

I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner, so I asked him to follow me back into the restaurant to order food together. For someone who had been on the fringes(边缘) of society it seemed like he was very surprised at my generosity(慷慨). But to me, it was what any ”human being“ should do or at least offer. He was afraid to go into the restaurant because of shame. But I insisted. When he finally followed me and walked into the restaurant, the people behind the counter refused to let him in, but I told them that I was buying him dinner and he had a right to be there. After some arguments, they finally let him in and he sat down at the table. It seemed like he was relieved a bit to be sitting at a table, I asked him to order whatever he wanted. He only ordered a hamburg, so I had to encourage him to order whatever he wanted.
