Training for a marathon is one of the most physically demanding activities you can willingly put yourself through. And when the race day finally comes after months of training and hours spent running on the playground you want to finish the race well. But sometimes, that just doesn’t happen.

A warm moment happened among three runners, and with the help of two other runners, there was a runner who reached the finish line and finished the race. It’s reported that the three runners didn’t know each other before the race.

That moment happened at the 203 London Marathon. A runner named Louis experienced this as he worked his way towards the end of the race. The man began to double over (弯腰) and was on the edge of collapsing (昏倒) as other runners passed by.

Clearly, he was too tired to finish the race. But it was only 200 meters left. And he might fall to the ground at any time. So tired, Louis fell to the ground and looked white and upset. At that moment, a runner saw Louis who needed help, so the runner ran to him and picked him up.

“Are you OK?” the runner asked Louis.

“I am too tired to keep running,” Louis replied.

“Come on! Let me support you to the finish line 200 meters away,” the runner said and grabbed his arm.

“It is very kind of you,” Louis said happily.

With the help of the runner, there were only 150 meters away from the finish line. But it seemed that he couldn’t hold Louis steady enough, Louis was in a bad condition and would fall to the ground at any time. The runner was very anxious and watched helplessly as other runners ran to the finish line, not knowing what to do.

Although the runner tried his best to support Louis steady, Louis fell to the ground again.

Lucas and Dawson were best friends all the time. Dawson learned his new spelling words faster, he was quick to learn addition and subtraction (减法), and he could read aloud quite effortlessly—but these are not the things that are really valued among little boys, and education is a lot more than reading, spelling, and math. Lucas had physical talents. He could run faster, climb higher up a tree, and throw a stone farther.

The annual school football selection contest was coming up, and Dawson had no doubt that Lucas would be selected. Lucas always got selected. He ran fast, he handled the ball well, and he didn’t get frightened when other kids tried to tackle (抢断球). Dawson desperately wanted to be selected.

Despite his talents in football, Lucas trained very hard, running, passing or shooting the ball on the football field whether it was sunny or rainy, while Dawson was always absent from the training due to his lack of confidence because he was not good at football.

One weekend, Dawson arrived at his grandpa’s home, looking helpless. “What’s wrong?” asked Grandpa kindly. “It’s the football selection contest. I want to be selected like Lucas but I am not confident.”

Dawson’s grandpa gently stroked his grandson’s shoulder and said, “You and Lucas have been friends for a long time and during that time there is something I have learned about Lucas. Over my life I have met a lot of other people like him. In my experience, the best athletes have a few secrets that help them gain success.” as though he were a master magician finally agreeing to tell his student some safely guarded magical tricks of the trade. Dawson was eager to learn the secrets.

A red car finally pulled over by a fantastic house. Out came the Smith family, including a 10-year-old girl, the Smiths’ youngest daughter, Amy, with her precious piggy-bank safe tightly held in her arms. They just moved to the new city as Mr Smith landed a better job here.

The next morning, while Amy was wondering where she could keep her piggy-bank safe, her mom patted her back lovingly and said, “Dear, I know you have worked hard to earn these 80 pounds. You watered plants over the weekend, you took care of our neighbor’s little boy Oliver, baby-sitting him and you washed Uncle Henry’s cars. I am sure you will be able to buy your favourite doll very soon.”

The following Monday, Amy went to her new school. As soon as she reached the school gate, she noticed a group of girls standing there. Amy hesitantly walked up to them and asked about the way to her classroom. However, the arrogant (傲慢的) girls gave her a cold look and turned around to face Amy with their back. Amy had never imagined that and she had tears running down her cheeks.

Just then, a sweet girl appeared. She smartly sent those girls away. Amy was so grateful to her. “Hello, I am Emily,” the girl introduced herself, reaching out her hands to give Amy a warm handshake. Amy thanked Emily for her help. Emily quickly responded, “Well, that’s what friends are for!”

Amy gradually started liking her new school. She liked Emily. Over the months, their friendship grew stronger. They spent their lunch breaks together, talked about their dreams, and laughed over silly jokes. Emily’s kindness and support became a beacon of light in Amy’s new school life.

Jacob had always admired firefighters. Their bravery and dedication to saving lives inspired him. He dreamed of becoming one himself someday. One evening, as he was walking home from his part-time job at the local grocery store, he noticed smoke billowing (涌出) from a house down the street. Without thinking twice, he ran towards the house.

As he got closer, he could hear the crackling of flames and the faint sound of someone calling for help. Jacob’s heart raced. He knew he had to act fast. He pulled out his phone and dialed 911, giving them the address and details. Then, he took a deep breath and decided to go inside.

Jacob pushed the front door and opened it with his shoulder. The thick smoke made it hard to see, but he could make out the shape of a woman at the top of the stairs. “Help! My daughter is upstairs! ” she cried.

Jacob covered his mouth with his sleeve as he made his way up the stairs. The heat was intense, and the smoke stung (刺痛) his eyes, but he pressed on. He found the little girl hiding under her bed. “It’s okay,” he said, “I’m here to help you.” He gently pulled her out and carried her down the stairs.

As they reached the bottom, the firefighters arrived. Jacob handed the girl to her mother, who hugged him tightly, tears streaming down her face. “Thank you, you saved my daughter’s life.”

Jacob stayed with the family until the firefighters declared the house safe. He watched as they worked tirelessly to put out the fire and ensure it didn’t spread to neighboring homes. The mother and daughter were taken to the hospital for a check-up, but they would be okay. As Jacob walked home that night, he couldn’t shake the feeling of pride and responsibility that had settled over him. He had faced a dangerous situation and had made a difference.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My first swimming experience gave me a sense of pride and accomplishment. The most memorable day for me would have to be the day I learned how to swim. Learning new things can be challenging at times. As long as I could remember, I have been afraid of what could happen to me when trying to swim. Later on in life, I started to realize how important a skill of swimming actually was, not to mention very good exercise. What I didn’t realize was that learning to swim could give me a whole new sense of confidence.

New situations usually make me a little nervous. This was my first swimming lesson so of course this was no exception. I changed into my trunks(泳裤)and stood next to the pool waiting for the teacher and other students to come out. They came over after a few minutes. The teacher introduced himself and seemed very nice. I was the youngest of all the students, which made me feel more nervous.

We all got into the pool. The teacher made us wear floaters(浮子)so that we could start getting comfortable being in the water. One boy Kevin seemed to have taken the class once before, so he got a kickboard(浮板)and started swimming off by himself. Another student was having a hard time keeping his head above water even with floaters, and I wasn’t much better than him. The teacher had us hold on to the wall to practice our kicking for the breaststroke for some time. Then, one by one, he had us hold on to a kickboard and followed us through the water as we kicked. Pretty soon Kevin was off like a good swimmer swimming fast back and forth as if he knew how to swim the whole time.

Sammy was a happy little boy who loved to play outside and explore the woods behind his house. He spent most of his time with his family, especially with his older sister Abby. They would run around in the fields together, climb trees, and catch insects.

One day, Sammy’s parents sat him down for an important talk. They told him that they were moving to the big city so that they could be closer to their jobs. At first, Sammy didn’t understand what that meant or how it would change things for him. But soon enough, he realized that everything was going to be different. He wouldn’t have as much space to run around in like he did in their small town. And worst of all—he’d have to start a new school!

Sammy had never been very good at making friends quickly—it always took some time before people warmed up to him and vice versa (反之亦然). So when he thought about starting over again somewhere new, it made him feel pretty anxious.

He tried talking to Abby about it but she seemed excited about the move—she jumped at the idea of exploring new places and meeting new people! But Sammy couldn’t shake off this feeling: what if nobody liked him? what if everyone else already had friends?

As they packed up their belongings into boxes ready for their journey ahead, Sammy felt sad saying goodbye to everything familiar: the old oak tree by the riverbank which he used to sit on during summer afternoons; the bakery shop owner who always gave them free cookies on Saturdays. It was hard to let go of all those memories they shared together.

Sammy’s family finally lived in the big city. Everything seemed so different from what he was used to in their small town. The buildings were taller, the streets were busier, and there were people everywhere. Sammy was feeling really nervous about starting school. He had never been to a big school before, and he didn’t know anyone there.

As the saying says, something big can grow from small beginning. A caring 17-year-old girl, Lauren Schroeder, was inspired to help bring healthy food to needy families in her community. The story began three years ago and it greatly influenced her family and community members.

Coming from a farming family, Lauren Schroeder had some familiarity with agriculture, and had helped raise rabbits and lambs, but had never tried planting vegetables at scale, though the Schroeder s planted soybeans and corn each year on their 150-acre farm.

Lauren Schroeder was volunteering at a community food bank at the age of 14. As she filled bags with donated groceries, she felt something was missing: fresh vegetables. Though there was plenty of food coming in can sandboxes, she didn’t see anything fresh and healthy to give to families in need. She thought it would be great to change that. She came up with a plan to grow and donate homegrown produce.

Inspired to make a change, this kindhearted teen then told her parents that she wanted to start a garden on part of their family farm in Dixon, Lowa, in order to supply local families in need with fresh produce including lettuce, carrots, tomatoes and so on, so that people could get the nutrition they needed. Although proud of their daughter’s vision, and keen to support her project, the parents kindly reminded her that her plan was no walk in the park and made her aware of how much work it would take. Still the teenager was up for the challenge. Finally, her parents decided to let Lauren have a try and suggested she start from planting half an acre of land for the first year.

About 15years ago, Oliver Muensterer packed his suitcase and traveled from his home in Leipzig, Germany to a town a few hours away. He had a job interview, so he arrived the evening beforehand, feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement about the opportunity that lay ahead.

When he woke up the next morning, the sunlight filtering through the curtains cast a warm glow in the hotel room. As he took a shower and started to get dressed, his mind raced with thoughts of the upcoming interview. The realization that he had forgotten to pack a white dress shirt struck him like a bolt of lightning, causing his heart to skip a beat.

“I thought I had prepared perfectly for everything. I had a tie; I had my suit; but somehow I had forgotten the shirt,” Muensterer muttered to himself, a touch of frustration in his voice.

This discovery sent Muensterer into a panic. He rushed down to the lobby (大厅) and went to the front desk to ask the man behind the counter if he could suggest a nearby store where he could buy a new shirt.

Approaching the front desk, he quickly explained his problem to the man behind the counter, desperation evident in his voice and behaviour.

“I’m really in a lot of trouble. I will have this really important job interview in an hour. And somehow I forgot my dress shirt at home.” Muensterer explained.

Muensterer’s heart raced as he stood at the front desk, his desperation palpable in the way his fingers tapped nervously against the polished wood. Every passing second felt like a lifetime as he awaited the front desk attendant’s response. The weight of the coming interview hung heavy on his shoulders, each breath a struggle against the choking panic. Yet, a glimmer of hope flickered within him as he asked assistance, his eyes searching desperately for any sign of solution. Would this stranger truly hold the key to saving his chance at success?

However, hardly had Muensterer finished his words when the man behind the counter said, “Don’t worry, sir, I have a solution.”

The Secret to Planting Flowers

Sumiko and her mother worked daily in their vegetable garden to earn a living. Sumiko’s job was to ensure the vegetables were never too dry. Each day Sumiko carefully watered them. She often pretended the vegetables she tended were beautiful chrysanthemums (菊花), like Mrs. Higaki’s prize flowers, the poor village’s only profitable flowers.

Mrs. Higaki, the village’s famous flower grower, was the only one who profited from selling flowers. Every year she won first prize at the Kyoto Chrysanthemum Festival. Sumiko admired Mrs. Higaki. If she could sell flowers like Mrs. Higaki, she would be able to use her earnings to support her family. But Sumiko knew she couldn’t afford to start growing chrysanthemums herself.

One day, Sumiko visited Mrs. Higaki’s garden, expressing her desire to compete in the Kyoto Chrysanthemum Festival. Mrs. Higak i laughed off Sumiko’s dreams, claiming the secret to growing prize chrysanthemums was exclusive (独有的) to her family.

However, when Mrs. Higaki threw away a withered (干枯的) plant, Sumiko saw an opportunity. She quickly bent over and retrieved (取回) the dried-up plant before rushing home. Then she created her own secret garden behind their cottage.

Sumiko planted the withered flower carefully exactly as Mrs. Higaki did, ensuring the top of the root ball was even with the soil’s surface. She bent close to the drooping (下垂的) leaves and whispered, “Grow, little flower, grow. Someday, you will bloom prettier than any flower at the festival.” She tended her plant every morning before breakfast and every evening while her mother prepared supper. Time spent with the little plant made Sumiko’s long days’ tending vegetables bearable. Her mother was pleased with how hard she worked.

As the Kyoto Chrysanthemum Festival neared, Sumiko’s plant towered over five feet tall, dwarfing (使显得矮小) Mrs. Higaki’s grandest flowers. It was not just tall, but the most beautiful rainbow chrysanthemum Sumiko had ever seen. She screamed with delight. Sumiko’s mother came running. Its beauty took her breath away. And Mrs. Higaki, who was passing by, pushing her cart filled with flowers for the festival, came to see what the excitement was, too. Mrs. Higaki’s mouth dropped open at the sight of the brilliant rainbow chrysanthemums.
