My brother and I set off shortly after sunrise. The air was cool, but I knew that wouldn’t last long. I’d chosen this hike for a hot day like today so that we’d climb down into a redrock canyon (峡谷) , where we would swim in a pool and camp by a picturesque waterfall. Unwilling to give up on my plan so soon and remembering there was another car where we parked, I believed there was someone else going to the canyon. So I chose to continue alone. He gave me the bag which contained food and water. Then we decided to meet up at the car the next day.
After another mile or so, the river came into view below me, but the trail became less obvious. I chose to go down along a bush-covered slope (斜坡) . As soon as I began hiking down, though, I realized the ground was much looser than I’d thought. I decided to climb back up and find another way.
I tried to pull myself up, but, unfortunately, the rock I was standing on broke beneath me. My face struck earth first. I was rolling with my bag, dirt and red sandstone flying beneath me as I picked up speed. I was going to die, I thought.
Then I fell flat on my back, my head hitting on a baseball-size stone. To my surprise, I was alive, but everything hurt. After lying in confusion for a few moments, I tried to look around. One of my eyes was already swollen shut, and through the other, the world spun around me. I could hardly move my left hand, and my right ankle hurt terribly.

Back home, Ehlers was troubled by that lost dog, which drove him to make up his mind to find that dog. So, four days later, he called his friend Greg, and the two drove back.
Arriving at that place, they came across a local farmer and asked him, “Have you seen a lost dog? We had seen the dog trembling alongside the road four days ago.” Meanwhile, Greg described the dog’s appearance to him.
“The dog sounded like one advertised as lost in the local paper. The ad had a phone number for a town in southern Minnesota and the dog’s picture,” the local farmer told them.
Ehlers and Greg were excited to know that the dog’s owners were Jeff and Lisa. So they called Jeff and Lisa to tell them they were finding their dog. Hearing that, Jeff was surprised and said, “We had hiked in Iowa before Thanksgiving with our dog, Rosie, but a fierce dog came out of nowhere and scared Rosie off. We searched in vain for Rosie in the next four days. So we drove back home.”
“We are also driving there now, and it will take about two hours to arrive in Iowa. Tell me exactly where you are. Let’s search Rosie together,” Jeff said. “OK. We will wait for you while looking for Rosie,” Ehlers replied.

I told him, and we talked for a few minutes. He told me he was a parachuter (伞兵) in the army. I told him that my dad had been an army parachuter a long time ago. A nursing assistant asked for one, so I gave him one too, and then my doctor… and then it seemed like everyone wanted one!
I started spending most of my time making lizards (蜥蜴)， snakes, and a turtle in the color combinations requested. My mom said she felt bad that it was turning from a hobby into a chore, but I genuinely enjoyed it and wanted to make something for everybody who’d been so nice to me when I was sick.

Jack turned to see the shopkeeper, an elderly man with a warm smile. “Yes, they’re amazing!” Jack said. “They’re strong, and they help so many people. They have super power. I wish I could be a superhero too.”
“You can be,” the shopkeeper encouraged.
Surprised, Jack asked, “But how? I don’t have any super power.”
Smiling softly, the shopkeeper bent down, placing his hands on Jack’s arms. “Why would you need them?” he replied kindly. “See that woman over there? She needs to take care of three children. However, she still actively helps the elderly in the community. And do you know Jimmy? He is a firefighter who has saved countless lives. Being a hero isn’t about super power; it’s about what’s in your heart.”
Locking eyes with Jack, the shopkeeper smiled. “You don’t need super power to be a hero. It starts with your heart.”

I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. "We made it," he said.
Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: "Out of order. Sorry."

That afternoon, school over, Simon flew home like a rabbit. After having finished counting the few dollars in his piggy bank, he asked his mother to take him to the flower shop nearby.
When they got in the car, Simon explained to his mother what he would do. Having understood the whole story, his mother looked at him with a loving expression.
The following day, Simon arrived at his classroom with a bunch of flowers and presented it to Ms. Jenkins with a bright smile. “I know you’re not a mother, but you treat us with kindness, affection and patience. You surely deserve a Mother’s Day gift, too,” he said to his teacher, whose jaw dropped in shock. The other kids applauded as Simon hugged Ms. Jenkins.
