Marcus was really excited to watch a solar eclipse(日食) in Bloomfield on a sunny Saturday afternoon. He set up the telescope he’d borrowed from his teacher on an open area near the baseball field, where the school baseball team was practicing. Marcus didn’t like baseball; he was more interested in the stars. A solar eclipse was a special event, and he didn’t want to miss it.

While the baseball team practiced, Marcus paid no attention to them. As he looked through his telescope at the sun, the moon started covering it, creating a cool crescent shape (月牙形). Marcus was amazed by it. He wished he could share this moment with someone who loved it as much as he did.

Then, the baseball coach, Bernardi, announced over the loud speaker that the baseball game was put off for 30 minutes because of the solar eclipse. Coach Bernardi’s announcement brought Mareus back. to reality. He realized he was alone near the baseball field, holding his telescope. He had been so into the eclipse that he didn’t notice a baseball flying toward him. It hit the telescope and broke the lens(镜片).

Marcus was angry, and he shouted, wondering who had thrown the baseball at him. He picked up the ball and headed toward the baseball field. He was worried about telling his teacher, Mr. Baker, about the broken telescope. Sure, it wasn’t his fault, but he had positioned the telescope near the baseball field, and he still felt he should take responsibility.

As Marcus stepped onto the baseball field, he realized some fans and players were watching the eclipse. Each person was trying to get a chance to look through the telescopes that some fans had brought to watch the eclipse. Marcus noticed a boy running toward him. ”I’m really sorry about what happened with your telescope. I didn’t mean to break it. I should have been more careful," said the boy, with a sincere expression.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One Sunday morning, a high school student named Lily was wandering in the school. The sun shone brightly through the leafy trees that lined in the school courtyard. A gentle breeze wafted (吹送, 飘送) through the air, carrying the distant sounds of laughter and chatter from other students. It was at this peaceful and joyful moment that Lily saw a wallet lying on the ground. “Whose is it?” Lily said to herself. She picked it up and opened it, seeing a large amount of cash accompanied by important documents and ID cards.

Doubt and confusion began to consume Lily. “What should I do? Should I keep the money for myself? I can buy many things I’ve wanted for a long time.” she thought. The trees around her seemed to swing together, as if mirroring the chaos within her thoughts. “But if I took it, I’d be going against my values and breaking the trust others have in me,” a voice within her whispered urgently.

A knot formed in Lily’s stomach as she weighed the pros and cons, her thoughts racing. The blue sky above seemed to laugh at her confusion, offering no answers or respite (喘息) , which reminded her of the difficult choices she faced.

To make matters worse, just as Lily was about to hand the wallet over to the school administration, her phone rang, which was from her sick grandmother. “Hi, Grandma, what’s up?” Lily asked worriedly. “The doctor advised me to be hospitalized.” her grandmother replied. This added an extra layer of complexity to her already disordered thoughts. “Can I use the money to help Grandma?” Lily considered.

She shut her eyes, trying to close out her confusion and anxiety. She knew that she needed to make a decision, but she was unsure what to choose.

I will never forget the experience in my life when I was young. As I was eighteen, I was doing my first part-time job in a little corner shop. The owner was a sweet old man who always saw the good in people. We were all informed that if a homeless guy that hung out nearby came in, no matter how little money he had, we should always give him two sandwiches and a drink. If it was hot, we were supposed to give him two big bottles of water. The homeless man was a sweet man who barely spoke.

One night, as my coworker had called in sick, I was in the shop alone for four hours before closing it. The homeless man came in with his little gentle smile, and I was excited because I knew I had his favorite sandwiches in the case. I handed them over to him along with his drink, and he gave me a $ 10 bill-much more than the small change he usually had.

I said, “Oh, got more cash today? Do you want a hot pie to go with your dinner? I’ve got a couple left!” He smiled and nodded excitedly, pointing to the chicken pie in the warmer (加热器) and happily hopping from foot to foot. I asked him if he wanted anything else.

He said, “No. Save things for the days when I don’t have any money and he still feeds me. He is a good man.” I said the owner sure was and wished him to enjoy his dinner. He waved goodbye to me. I went back to do some cleaning and fill the fridges. Then I heard the bell go off for the door, I went to the front to serve other customers. About an hour later, there were no customers. Suddenly, a strong wind came and the roof of the shop shook. It began to fall before I could escape. I was hit by something and then was unconscious. That was the last thing l remember before coming to. I was loaded into an ambulance.

When I revived (苏醒) in hospital, my doctor asked, “Hey, there she is! Do you know what happened?” I stammered (结结巴巴地说) and answered his questions before asking my own.

Avoiding people in a small town requires the skills of a spy. Alban, 22, hasn’t seen or spoken to his junior school teacher, Ms Taylor, in his town for many years.

In Grade 9, Alban argued fiercely with one of his classmates, Robert. Robert grabbed his arm and verbally (言语) threatened him. When Alban turned to Ms Taylor, hoping for help, she kept silent and seemed to be thinking about something. Before she spoke, Alban rushed out angrily. That was the end of his relationship with Ms Taylor who had been the one person in school he could depend on. Then Alban moved like a ghost, taking precautions to stay far away from Ms Taylor.

One day after graduation from college, Alban was halfway home when he felt his cellphone vibrate (震动). It was Julia, the monitor in Grade 9, who had announced the classmate reunion and Ms Taylor’s retirement ceremony, which would be held in the school meeting room. Alban’s heart sank. Although he missed his classmates, Alban felt embarrassed to attend the reunion. Ms. Taylor would be there!

Despite his hesitation, Alban arrived on time for the big day. From where he sat, Alban saw his teacher, thin and tired, walk unsteadily into the room. She had not been well. Alban hesitantly walked over to her. He didn’t say much, just a few pleasant words. No hug or smile. Many people crowded in. The ceremony began and Alban sat there, just listening to the speeches of Ms Taylor and other students.

After the party Ms Taylor’s image, present and past, always haunted (萦绕) him. Alban’s memory of Ms Taylor began when he was in Grade 7. She’d listen to him patiently and help solve his problems in every aspect. She’d often suggest interesting books, and they’d share their opinions. Sometimes she even took him to camp near the school on weekends. Great memories still remained in his mind.

My brother Mat is a skateboarder enthusiast. He always has been and always will be, and along with that comes determination. Anytime he has fallen down, he gets right back up and tries it again. If he has broken something, he just keeps on skating. He has always been such an inspiration to me, because he is so determined.

Sometimes that determination is good, but on this particular day, it was a not.

We were out in the front of our grandparents' house. Mat was determined to “ollie” (豚跳) over a chair that he had placed in the street. I was watching him try and try, over and over again. I could see him sweating. As usual, it was a hot Texas day. I was worried that he would get heatstroke (中暑). Even though I was only about five, I had heard grown-ups talking about people dying of heatstroke, and I kind of understood what it was. I really didn't want my living, yet hardheaded, brother to get it.

So there I was, my chin cupped in my hands, sitting on the porch of my grandparents' house, worrying about Mat and thinking of ways to keep him cool.

“Hey Brit, could you get me my tea?”

I woke up from my thoughts and back to the heat of the day. I replied to his request with a nod and stood up to go get the iced tea. Even through my plastic pink sandals (凉鞋), I could feel the extreme heat of the concrete steps. It was burning my feet, so I quickly went inside the house.

I headed through the hallway toward Grandma's kitchen. I was thinking of how sweet and delicious her iced tea is. As I entered the kitchen, I heard a worried voice from Grandma. “What was that?” Grandma said. “Did you hear that? Did Mat scream?”

“I didn't. I'll go see.” I ran out, with one thing on my mind — HEATSTROKE.

37-year-old Casey Ryan felt very comfortable in the mountains of the Willamette National Forest in Eugene, Oregon. He knew its roads and hiking trails well from his time as a volunteer in a roadside clean-up crew. These days, he was often there photographing wildlife, and he almost always had his lightweight drone(无人机) with him. It was one of his favorite cameras.

Though weather conditions weren’t great that morning, Ryan decided to go on a short hike with his friend. Snow was common and Ryan felt he knew the area well enough. Still, as they drove along, the roads became icy. Ryan thought he might turn back, but after a truck passed them coming from the opposite direction, he felt safe enough to keep going. The roads must still be passable in that direction, he reasoned.

But it wasn’t long before the two men came across a woman who was stranded(滞留) along the mountain road. Ryan and his friend stopped to help her. Ryan tried to line up his truck’s rope to pull the woman’s car out —and ended up stuck in the same place.

The three tried for hours to dig the cars out, but the sun was setting fast. The temperature was dropping and the snow was turning to ice blocks around the tires. It was impossible to dig out.

Thirty miles from the closest town, their phones had no signal in such a low-lying(低洼的)area. Their car radio and walkie-talkies couldn’t transmit any signal far enough. The three travelers prepared to spend the night in their cars. The hikers had survival gear(装备) and food to share, so they weren’t terribly worried.

It was Ryan’s friend who, jokingly perhaps, brought up a news report he had seen about a man using a drone to send roses to his girlfriend living on the 10th floor to make a proposal (求婚).

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I remember a time when I learned the true meaning of forgiveness. It was a period in my life that tested my patience and my ability to understand others.

It all started when I was in middle school. I had a close friend named Emily, and we spent a lot of time together. One day, Emily introduced me to a new girl in our class, named Olivia. Olivia was quiet and shy, but we quickly became friends as well.

One afternoon, after school, we were all working on a project in the classroom. As we were discussing our ideas, Olivia suddenly exclaimed out something that completely contradicted what I had been saying. I was shocked and felt a little embarrassed. I tried to explain my point of view, but Olivia was very stubborn and insisted on her own idea.

Emily, who was sitting next to me, tried to mediate (调节) the situation. But Olivia got angry and said some unkind words to me. I was hurt and angry, and I couldn’t believe that Olivia would treat me like that. I stormed out of the classroom, leaving Emily and Olivia behind.

The next few days were very difficult for me. I avoided Olivia as much as possible, and our friendship with Emily seemed to be stressed. I felt like I had been betrayed by Olivia, and I couldn’t understand why she would do such a thing.

One day, I asked Emily why she was still friends with Olivia after what she had done. Emily looked at me with a sad expression and said, “You know, Olivia has been through a lot lately. Her parents are going through a divorce, and she’s really struggling. Maybe she was rude to you because she was feeling overwhelmed and insecure.”

Hearing this, I felt a surge of guilt. I realized that I hadn’t taken the time to understand Olivia’s situation. I had been too quick to judge her and too focused on my own feelings of hurt. I decided to talk to Olivia and apologize for my behavior.

Jack, a 10-year-old boy, was apparently below his peers athletically and intellectually since he suffered a high fever five years ago and didn’t get timely treatment. Because of his serious flaws,

Jack was not allowed to go to school like a normal child. Fortunately, his family never gave up on him. Instead, they taught him to take care of himself, and even came up with an idea for Jack to earn a living—to sell daily necessities such as water, towels and tissues (纸巾) on the street.

Jack readily accepted his family’s advice. However, his mother was not as calm as she appeared. She was indeed worried a lot. She was always thinking to herself, “What if someone laughs at him for his strange way of walking? What if someone mimics his mumbled speech?” So when Jack walked down the street with a basket full of tissues, his mother sneaked behind him.

At first, everything seemed to be going well. Passers-by did not look at him in a different way just because of his “different” way of saying and walking. Soon after, Jack sold a few packets of tissues without a hitch and every time he made a sale, he would politely thanked the buyers, which earned him approving looks and smiles. However, something alarming, eventually, happened—several packets of tissues accidentally fell off because Jack was walking unsteadily. He bent down to pick them up, but because of his poor balance, more tissues fell out of the basket. What’s worse, Jack fell to the ground heavily. At that moment, his mom couldn’t bear it anymore and attempted to offer a hand to Jack. Just at that time, what worried her most happened when a group of children from school saw Jack and caught sight of his “awkward” and “different” way of movements.

Finally, the car pulled into my grandparents Gran and Mimi’s driveway, which stretched in a thin line through the maple (枫树) forest. Sky-blue tubes stretched from the trunks of the maples, sending sap (树液) into a huge tank. I liked visiting the farm on spring breaks... before I knew how badly I could mess things up.

During lunch Mimi asked, “Why so depressed, Jude?” They were really acting as if nothing bad happened during my last visit. For a second, my eyes caught Mimi’s. Could I ask her how much money their neighbor lost? Was Mr. Jackson still upset? “I’m fine,” I answered. “Just missing computer camp this week. That’s…something I’m good at.” Mimi nodded. “Ahh, that sounds disappointing.”

After lunch, I was on my own while Gran and Mimi worked in the sugarhouse. No way was I going there. The sugarhouse was next to Mr. Jackson’s rose beds, which was destroyed by the goats I carelessly let loose last year. Suddenly Mimi opened the sugarhouse door. “Jude! Come quick, please. We need you to drop defoamer (消泡剂) into the sap, or it will boil over.”

“They need me?” I guessed I would just go for a minute. When I walked through the doorway, a burst of sweet maple hugged me. Mimi passed me a small plastic bottle. Quickly, I added drops to each pan before any sap boiled over. The sap was coming in good! I had to make sure the sap kept flowing in while I got the fire burning.

Then, out of nowhere, there was Mr. Jackson! Opening the sugarhouse door. “I need help,” he yelled. “Maise is birthing, and the lamb needs a strong pull.” That was when he saw me. “He’s probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.” I got frightened. But instead, Mr. Jackson said, “Great! Jude is here. Both of you come. Jude can stay here and watch the boil.” Before they left, Mimi reminded me, “Jude, you could make it. Just boil the sap to syrup (糖浆) for us to draw it off!”

Could I?

A few weeks ago, my sister was going through her old coats and vests(背心), seeing what was no longer needed. Although she was still in junior high school. she found ways here and there to make some extra money for her holiday shopping.

She found two vests in like-new condition and asked if I would list them in our local Facebook yard sale group. She set the price at $7 each and it wasn’t long before someone replied, wanting to buy them.

The buyer replied in a short message with broken English; it was obvious that Spanish was her native language. After a few messages back and forth, she revealed that she couldn’t drive to my house to pick up the vests because she lived on the other side of town, but asked if I would be willing to ship the vests to her instead.

I hesitated. The last week of school was so crazy busy. I barely had enough time to get from place to place, much less figure out how to wrap up these heavy vests and ship them out. I was feeling overwhelmed trying to get everything accomplished and this one extra task seemed like that straw that would break the camel’s back.

She must have sensed. my hesitation as she sent another message offering to send me a money order(汇票)to pay for the vests and the shipping costs.

A money order.

I literally froze when I read her message. It was obvious this woman wanted these items, probably for a Christmas gift for a child or grandchild. I knew if she took the time to get a money order, then mailed it to me and if I waited to get the money order then shipped the vests to her, there was a really good chance they would not arrive in time for Christmas morning.
