Great Adventurers to Mt Qomolangma

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the impossible possible. They have been on top of the world. They climbed Mount Qomolangma!Tenzing Norgay is among the world’s famous mountain climbers;he was one of the first two individuals who reached the summit of Mount Qomolangma with Sir Edmund Hillary on May 29,1953.

In 1935, he got an opportunity to join in the Mount Qomolangma expedition. He was employed by Eric Shipton. In 1953 he took part in the seventh expedition to Mt Qomolangma.A member of the team, Edmund Hillary was also there. This expedition took 400 people, of which 362 were porters. The expedition set up base camp in March,1953.Working slowly it set up its final camp at the South Col at 7,890m.On May 26 Bourdillon and Evans attempted the climb but turned back when Evans’ oxygen system failed. The pair had reached the South Summit, coming within 91m of the summit.Hunt then directed Norgay and Hillary to go for the summit.Snow and wind held the pair up at the South Col for two days. They set out on May 28 with a support trio of Alfred Gregory,Ang Nyima and a member called Lowe. The two pitched a tent at 8,500m on May 28 while their support group returned down the mountain.

On the following morning Hillary discovered that his boots had frozen solid outside the tent.He spent two hours warming them before he and Norgay attempted the final ascent wearing 14kg packs. They finally reached the summit but only spent fifteen minutes there.Hillary took the famous photo of Norgay posing with his ice-axe, but since Norgay had never used a camera,Hillary’s ascent went unrecorded.Additional photos were taken looking down the mountain in order to reassure that they had made it to the top and that the ascent was not faked.

The two had to take care on the descent after discovering that drifting snow had covered their tracks, complicating the task of retracing their steps. The first person they met was Lowe, who had climbed up to meet them with hot soup. Then they climbed on down the mountain.

After a lot of struggles they stood on the top of Mount Qomolangma. They have been on top of the world!

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Have you ever really thought about the effects television has on your children? 98% of families in the US have at least one TV, according to TV-Free America, and the TV is on for an average of 7 hours and 12 minutes a day. On average, a child aged 2-11 watches TV for 1, 197 minutes a week! It is pretty surprising that the same age group of children only spend 38.5 minutes a week on a meaningful conversation with their parents.

As children start watching TV at a younger age, their behaviors and relationships with their family can be affected more drastically. When a group of 4 to 6yearolds were asked to choose between watching television and spending time with their fathers, 54% preferred TV. But what if you don’t let your small children watch TV? You may not. But if your toddler (学步的小孩) goes to daycare, you may not know, 70% of daycare centers use the TV during a typical day. Shouldn’t they be playing with each other and learning, not doing something they can do at home?

Parents do not have to feel completely helpless. As of 2, 000, all TVs now have a chip that helps parents control and even block certain shows. So if you feel TV is not as wonderful as it seemed before, just think you have at least a little power over what your kids watch.

But what is even more shocking is how much violence is shown on television. Some kids do enjoy that but most don’t. The percentage of children surveyed who said they felt “upset” by or “scared” of violence on TV is 91%! I think that shows containing violence or scary scenes should be broadcast at a later time, so smaller children will not be exposed to them.

Rain is pouring down today, which brings back sweet memories of our dog, Bambi. She-joined our family at the age of four months. Like all puppies, she was full of energy and wonder. Our boys described excitedly that she looked just like the young deer, Bambi, in the movie they had watched recently. The name fitted her personality perfectly.

Bambi also had all the fine physical characteristics of the German Shepherd. She was strong, yet gentle and shy. We were a young family with two growing, energetic boys, so she fitted right in with our lifestyle. Bambi loved the boys. She would play with them until they were completely tired.

When Bambi was almost two years old, a full-grown dog, she became quite protective of us. She never failed to watch the boys. If any stranger entered our yard, she’d watch him or her with sharp eyes and let out a low bark. Even though Bambi had this protective instinct (本能), she never hurt anyone. Nevertheless, she did manage to frighten (惊吓) away many welcome and unwelcome guests.

On one occasion, I had called a repairman to come to our home to fix the refrigerator. I was at work, and the boys were home with the babysitter. I told the repairman by phone that we had a dog, but it would be safe to enter the house because the babysitter would be there to meet him. However, when the repairman arrived, the babysitter and boys went outside. As he went close to our front door, Bambi was outside and she barked at him while she guarded the door. As long as the man attempted to move, Bambi would jump up and bark more fiercely (凶猛地). This man had never seen such a fierce dog before and was frightened too much. He had no idea whether to go away or scream for help.

Paragraph 1:
Luckily, the babysitter and boys returned from their walk at that lime.

Paragraph 2
Though Bambi was so brave, there, was a side to her personality that didn’t match her.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

The most important change in a person’s life is the change of his or her attitude. Right attitudes produce right actions. Have you ever met someone who gave you a different view of life?

On a Sunday morning, I saw something very interesting as I went to the greengrocer’s. To get there, I had to cross a bridge over railway tracks. The bridge was pretty high. A set of steep steps had to be climbed; then the bridge flattened out (变平), followed by coming down another set of steps. On my way back from the greengrocer’s, I saw an elderly gentleman running up the steps. After watching him run up the steps so fast, I thought that he could be in a rush.

Before I knew it, he had crossed the bridge, and then he ran back to where he started. To my surprise, he did not stop. He turned around, and then went up and down the bridge again. He was not struggling, and seemed to enjoy going up and down the bridge. Being a fitness fanatic (热衷于健美的人) myself, I admired his ability to Cross the bridge so quickly. My curiosity got the better of me, and I came up to him to have a chat with him.

“Excuse me, sir. Are you training for an event?” I asked.

He stopped. “No, not training for an event. Well, I am training for life,” he said with a broad smile on his face as sweat rolled down his cheeks.

I told him that I had been looking for a role model of fitness, and that I hoped to be as strong as he is when I get to his age. He said that everyone has a choice about what they do with their life. “I am not different,” he added. With much admiration, I asked, “What drives you to maintain good health?”

Then he told me the accident he met with when he was young.

Paragraph 1:

“I used to be a cyclist,” he said.
