1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Have you ever lost something you borrowed from others? Well, my situation is close to that, but instead of losing what I borrowed, I wrecked it.

I live in San Francisco, where it seldom snows. But if you get in a car and drive a few hours, you’ll arrive at these beautiful snow-covered mountains. Last week, my friend Ollie and his grandmother Mary invited me to go skiing with them. It was colder than I’d expected. Mary offered to lend me her scarf. It was the softest, warmest, most awesome scarf, and Mary had knit (编织) it herself.

“These old knees need a rest!” Mary said after a couple of hours of skiing. “You two go ahead and take another run. I’ll be in the lodge, reading by the fire,”

So Ollie and 1 took one more ride on the ski lift up the mountain. As we looked around at the trees and watched people zipping down the slopes, I said, “This one piece of yarn (毛线) on Mary’s scarf keeps tickling my chin.”

I pulled on the end of the yarn, thinking it was just a loose piece that had separated from the scarf. But the more I pulled, the longer the piece became.

“You’d better stop.” Ollie said, “The scarf is unravelling (散开)!”

When I took off the scarf to see what she meant, I was horrified. “Oh, no! I just turned Mary’s special scarf into half a special scarf and half a big pile of yarn!”

It was one-of-a-kind-thing that I'll never be able to replace! “What am I going to do?” I asked my best friend.

Ollie suggested, “You could say you accidentally dropped it.”

“I hope you’re kidding.” I shook my head.

“You know 1 am joking around,” said Ollie, “Honesty is more important to Mary than anything. You just have to tell her the truth.”

Right then, it was our turn to get off the lift. 1 shoved the wrecked scarf into my jacket pocket and skied extra slowly down the hill to the lodge.

I wasn’t in a giant hurry to tell Mary the news.

60-year-old Richard Olsen had retired from his work. He was very interested in adventure and hunting. This time he hunted on a land near Watford City, N D., in the sparsely (稀少地) populated western portion of the state. In the cold winter, he tried a new spot and forgot to bring his cell phone, the only time on the trip. He trekked (艰苦跋涉) more than half a mile with two dogs and a harvested wheat field.

Eyes fixed in the horizon in expectation of another pheasant (野鸡) taking flight, Richard stepped on a thin crust (外壳) of snow on a canal. It collapsed and dropped him.

Realizing that he was in trouble and was going to hurt himself, Richard was suddenly picking up a lot of speed. His left leg hurt first, and he lay on his side to reach for his shotgun (猎枪), unloaded it and used it as a crutch (拐杖). He spent an hour and a half climbing the earthen canal backward to keep pressure off his bad leg. When he was partly up, he slipped and slid back down, because one of his feet got stuck between two rocks. Richard told himself that if he didn’t get himself out of the canal he wasn’t going to have a very good night.

Richard walked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. Richard immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred at about 2 p.m., and it was nearly 5 p.m. with the road far away and the sun setting.

Richard focused on crawling to safety. Even with his gun’s support, hopping (单足跳跃) was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was stubborn and sure that he must be persistent. He was in exhaustion and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped below zero overnight, and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

From the time when I was a child, my mother made it clear that she did not like nursing homes(敬老院). I remember her saying that nursing homes were terrible places. Whenever my mother mentioned the topic. she would shake her finger at me and add a warning:"If you put me in one of those places, I'll not forgive you! "I knew my mother's wishes and wanted to obey.

Fortunately, my mother lived near me, and for many years it was easy to check on her and help with her care. But with each passing year, my mother experienced a decline in her physical and mental abilities. After ninety, when she was diagnosed with dementia(老年痴呆症) , she needed more assistance with the normal activities of daily living and required close observation just for her own safety.

During the passage of time, I, too, was getting older, I had my own mobility(移动性) issues and health concerns, As the days passed, it became clearer that some changes were needed. If I had to go out for groceries(食品杂货), I couldn't leave her alone. When I slept, my mother was un-watched, and she could get out of bed and wander off.

Fortunately, while I was figuring out what to do, a brand-new nursing home was built in our town, I toured the nursing home and discovered that they could provide a private room for my mother. They also had staff members that were very professional and well-trained, I tried to convince myself that the new nursing home was the best and safest place for my mother, but I seemed to hear my mother's words and see her finger shake in front of my eyes.

A Sweet Song

"Nothing will ever be the same again," Ally whispered. She sank slowly into her father's favorite chair and stared at the small American flag on his desk. It was the flag which Chief Russell had given to her after the funeral last summer, when he hugged her and told her how proud the Police Department was of her dad's work for them. His tears had warmed Ally's cheeks; her own tears were still frozen inside her heart.

Ally looked at her father's picture on the bookcase. Dad was sitting in the middle of a stream, wet through but grinning proudly. "I miss you, Dad," she said softly. By this time last year she had already taken dozens of pictures. Ever since she could remember, she and Dad had been a team, searching the woods behind the house each weekend for a glimpse of the special wood warbler(林中莺).

Ally reached for the first photo album she and Dad had put together. On the cover a tiny orange bird with blue-gray wings and sharp black eyes peered out of the photo her father had clipped from a local newspaper. Ally smiled, remembering the excited look on his face when he first showed her the pretty bird. "Ally, I bet if we search real hard, we'll see this little guy together some day."

They'd never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. Staying with Dad, Ally felt comfortable. "If only I could get that good feeling back," she thought, sighing.

Staring at the bird, suddenly, she knew exactly what she had to do. Grabbing the-little flag, she placed her camera around her neck and hurried outside. Ally stuck the flag among the flowers in the garden. "Please let me see the warbler," she murmured to herself. She gave her worried Mom a kiss and then set off into the woods.

I come from a family where all our siblings separated because of some reasons. After we grew up, my three siblings and I could go years without speaking. And that is where this story begins.

My sister Jeanne and I were born only 14 months apart, but by the time we were teenagers we had lost touch. By age 19, I had moved away from our home in Wisconsin to live on my father’s horse farm in Virginia, where I worked ultimately as a veterinary assistant and a bartender. Jeanne got married at 18, moved to Chicago, and became—well, I didn’t know what. We lived separate lives in separate states, and our connection somehow ended.

Fast-forward about five years. I was 24 and on a trip with my fiance to New York City, a place I had never been. It was overwhelming. I was used to riding my horse to the corner store where everyone knew everyone and everything going on in the quiet little cowpoke town of Driver, Virginia. We had gone to New York to visit my fiance’s cousin and see the sights. We went to Little Italy, the Statue of Liberty, Chinatown, and several Manhattan clubs. I had never seen so many taxicabs in one spot in all my life.

During a day of sightseeing, we were crossing a very busy street loaded with people. Everyone was in a hurry, hustling and bustling. I had laughed at something my fiance said, and I suddenly heard my name yelled from somewhere behind me:“Cheryl!” I froze in my steps in the middle of the road. Tears welled up spontaneously in my eyes. I knew without a doubt that it was my sister Jeanne. I yelled back, “Jeanne?”

Another disappointing day was passing, and he was driving his beat-up old car home. He was out all day looking for a job. It was getting dark and light snow was coming down, so he almost didn’t see the old lady standing on the side of the road. It was clear that she needed help. He pulled up in front of her obviously brand new and expensive car and got out.

While nobody had stopped to help for the last hour and there was a smile on his face, she was worried when he approached her. He didn’t look safe. He looked poor and hungry.

He could see she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in your car to keep warm? My name is Bryan.”

A tire was flat. Bryan fetched tools from his own car to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening her car’s nuts, she rolled down the window, said thanks and asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened without his help.

Bryan never thought twice about the money. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed. He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home.

Soon the lady saw a small restaurant. She went in to grab a bite to eat and warm up before she made the last leg of her trip home. The waitress came over with a sweet smile and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant(怀孕的). Although the waitress looked tired and walked painfully due to the pregnancy, she still served the lady.

Paragraph 1:

After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a one-hundred-dollar bill. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 2:

That night when the waitress got home from work, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written.
