Silent friends in a life storm

Dear Annalisa,

My dad died unexpectedly a few months ago and I feel angry with some of my oldest friends, who have hardly contacted me since it happened.

Three months on, I’ve finally heard from some of them through text about other matters. I didn’t mention my sad stories, and they didn’t ask.

I understand that death is a frightening subject and that people might worry about saying the wrong thing. Yet I still feel a bit hurt by their lack of contact after my dad’s funeral (葬礼).

Now I don’t want to face them because I don’t want to make them feel guilty (内疚的). Normally they are extremely good friends who I love very much. I have other friends, so I can manage this without their support. I just want to let go of the anger so I can get through this sadness. Hope to receive your advice.

Yours,

Amy

Dear Amy,

I’m so sorry to hear about your dad’s death.

Your anger may come from being unable to ask for the help you need. You also seem worried about troubling your friends too much.

It is likely that your friends are very concerned about you. Perhaps their own fear of the subject is too big to comfort you and, just as you say, they are frightened of saying the wrong thing. Also, people often want to “fix” things, but no one can fix death, so they may feel powerless to help you. In these situations, you have to be brave to break the ice and tell them not only what you need, but also how to offer help.

If you really can’t ask your “silent” friends for help, maybe you could count more on those other friends. You might find some psychological (心理的) treatment useful as well. Talking to someone with professional knowledge who understands your situation can help you carry the burden of sadness.

Yours,

Annalisa

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sometimes, we just get a feeling. It sets us on guard and shapes our responses, if we are wise enough to listen. I definitely had it when I stepped out of the main building of the community college at 8:30 in the evening. I looked up and noted it was going to rain, and probably hail (冰雹), any minute. I lived in the country six miles away, so I knew I’d better hurry. After jogging to my car, I jumped in and headed for home. Martin McBride belted out “Wild Angels” from the CD player.

As I drove a few blocks away, the rain slowly started to fall, and I knew a storm was coming. I quickly began thinking of places nearby to pull in for cover until the worst had passed. Two blocks away was Parsons Motors, which had a large metal awning (雨蓬) that would shelter me. I decided I would stop to see if there was room for my car. But as I prepared to turn into the drive, a strong sense of fear washed over me, and an inner voice said, “No, just keep going and get home as fast as you can.”

So that’s what I did. Martina kept singing, and I kept on driving. There were only a few cars in front of me, all moving west down Main Street into a wall of pouring rain and strong wind. The last thing I saw clearly were the sudden brake lights of the cars in front of me as each stopped and turned onto the shoulder of the highway. I quickly followed. I sat shocked and somewhat frightened, as the wind and rain rocked my car. I could hardly make out the hood (引擎声) of my car as all my other surroundings disappeared into the darkness.

I took a deep breath, as I struggled to figure what my father had said.我热泪盈眶,只能说:“我刚从那边来。    4     I was stopped outside of town in the worst rainstorm I have ever seen.” We went inside, and my father asked if I had heard the hurricane warnings or a radio weather alarm. I explained that I had a CD playing and might have gone through town right before the warnings sounded. 我突然明白了为什么我当时会有那种感觉:我应该一直开回家。    5    . We were so thankful I had chosen not to stop.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了朋友和友谊的重要性。
8 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入适当内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式

As we walk the “path of life”, we may wish to be alone with our own thoughts and ideas, because sometimes     1    (leave) alone may contribute to     2    (reflect) on ourselves and help to get us improved. However, we can’t live     3    friendship. Close friendships can especially help smooth out the sometimes     4    (rock) road that we are all     5    (mean) to travel. The reason     6    we must live in social groups is that friendship can provide us     7    three “fruits”, such as comforting the heart, advising the head and helping us achieve goals.

To begin with, we can get peace by sharing with friends our joy, sadness, success and     8    (fail). With true friends whom we can depend on, we get opportunities for comfort and     9    (protect). What’s more, we can have a     10    (good) understanding and     11    (judge) through conversations with well-meaning and wise friends. In addition, there are so many things     12     can only be achieved with the help of friends,     13    it is during our life or even after death.

Finally,     14     should be pointed that being surrounded by a crowd doesn’t mean you have owned true friends. With the comfort and help from     15    (trust) friends, we can live a better life.

9 . What is an Adult?

How do you know when a person is an adult? Does the person’s age tell you? Or is an adult a person who takes on responsibility for work and family? There are different ways to define (定义) an adult.

Age

One way to define an adult is by age, but countries have very different ideas about the legal age of an adult. In India, a man can’t marry without his parents’ permission until age 21, and a woman can’t marry until age 18. However, in Jordan, the legal ages are 16 for men and 15 for women. In Brazil, a 16-year-old can vote, but in most African nations, people don’t have this right until they are 21. The legal driving age in Ethiopia is 14, and in Russia it is 18. The legal age of an adult is different around the world.

Body

Another way to define an adult is by the person’s body. An adult is a person who is grown and can have children. This is a physical definition of an adult. According to this definition, a 16-year-old is usually an adult.

Brain

Teenagers may have fully grown bodies, but they don’t usually think like adults. Their bodies usually stop growing at about age 17, but one part of the brain continues to grow until a person is about 25. This part of the brain, the frontal lobe, helps a person to understand cause and effect. It also helps a person to use good judgment to make decisions, solve problems, plan, and organize. When this part of the brain is fully grown at age 25, a person thinks like an adult.

Responsibilities

Another way of defining an adult is as a person who can take on important responsibilities like a job and a family. An adult respects others and understands that his or her own needs are not always the most important. This is the social definition of an adult. Some teenagers behave like adults, but most are not that responsible until they are over 20 years old.

What Is an Adult?

In conclusion, teenagers look like adults but are not yet adults. Some countries give teenagers the right to have adult responsibilities like marriage, voting, and driving, but teenagers don’t always think or act like adults. Most people agree that after age 25, a person is an adult.

10 . Universities are expanding opportunities to spend a year overseas, meaning that not only language students benefit from time spent in another culture. Amanda Harper, head of placements and Bath University, says going abroad offers students the chance to widen their cultural horizons and develop an international network of friends and contacts.

‘One of my science students learned to dance salsa and speak Spanish during his year in Costa Rica,’ she says. ‘The students mature and their confidence increases. These changes are unquantifiable in terms of marks are the time management skills, presentation skills and ability to deal with the world of vastly improved when they come back from their placements.’

As it becomes increasingly difficult to stand out in the graduate job market, a year’s experience in another country could be what separates one student from others with the same results. A survey for the confederation of British industry found that fifty six percent of employers were not satisfied with graduates’ foreign language skills and forty percent were dissatisfied with candidates’ international cultural awareness.

Most overseas placements are taken in the third year of university, after which students return for a fourth and final year. Cassandra Popli, 22, who spent a year at California State University in Long Beach, got a job in California which she will take up after graduating from Swansea University this summer. ‘I feel like I have got so much more from that year abroad than I would have if I had stayed here,’ she adds.
