Most people love reading. It is a pleasure of the mind.     1     阅读有一点像体育运动: Your eagerness and knowledge and quickness make you a good reader.     2     Reading is fun, not because the writer is telling something, but because it makes your mind work.     3     Your own imagination works along with the author’s or even beyond his. Compared with his, your experience brings you to the same or different conclusions.

4     Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you concentrate on books somebody tells you you ought to read, you probably won’t have fun. But if you put down a book you don’t like and try another till you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it,     5     你当然会过得愉快. If you become, as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder or gentler, you won’t have suffered during the process.

Living Well with Others

A good life is one that is good for living well with others, while living comfortably and honestly. However, not everyone can deal with the relationship well with others. They are looking for new ways to make their life better. This article will cover some ideas you may want to consider.

1     It’s often been said that a smile is catching. Research suggests that’s true. Studies suggest that friendly engagement (交往) with others improves happiness levels, at least in part. People are more likely to treat a smiling person better than a non-smiling person.

2     Studies have shown that helping others has a direct relation to individual happiness. Taking time to look after others has been important to understanding “the good life”. Volunteering to help others has been connected to better quality of life.

3     The golden rule is still the most important rule for getting along with others. Think of how you would like your friends to act around you. If you treat people with love and respect, they will treat you with the same.

Value your friendships with others. The quality of a person’s friendship has a direct effect on their well-being. Friends can increase your sense of belonging and purpose. They will also help prevent you from developing bad habits.

A. Help others.
B. Treat others how you wish to be treated.
C. Smile at others around you.
D. Communicate with others.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。许多导演瞄准小说市场,将热门小说改编成电影后却票房惨淡,这是为什么?为什么小说被改编成电影具有挑战性,短文对此进行了说明。

7 . Reading a book and watching a film are two very different experiences, but it’s normal to have high expectations when a film of a favourite book is made. There are many times I have been pessimistic or even disappointed by a film of a book I love.

The source material for a film may be taken from classic novels, short stories, comic books and stage plays, as well as non-fiction such as biographies and autobiographies, even those written by ghost writers. All can work well, but why do many adaptations and indeed remakes fail with both cinema audiences and critics? And why do some adaptations get lower ratings than others?

A key question is obviously how close to the original the film is. Since a typical film is only around two hours long, it becomes a question for screenwriters to decide what is appropriate for the screen and what to leave out. Screenwriters take creative liberty and sometimes there may be changes to the plot, additions, and even different endings to please producers, directors and test audiences. I, like many people, have often left the cinema feeling “the film is not like the book”.

Another problem area is the cast. Finding actors acceptable to film audiences can mean the difference between success and failure. Readers of the book use their imaginations to visualise characters and have very definite ideas about how characters should look and sound. This is where I think many film adaptations fall down.

Despite the challenges, there have been some highly successful films made from popular books. For me, Jaws, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings all fit this category. And possibly the best proof of a successful adaptation is the James Bond series, the majority of which has been adapted from the 007 novels of Ian Fleming. Perhaps unusually, audiences seem to accept that the actors who have played James Bond have changed so often, although everyone seems to have their favourite. I know I do.

1. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 imply?
A.The book is too long to read.
B.The audiences don’t like the film.
C.The screenwriters are very creative.
D.The film is more attractive than the book.
2. What is the main topic of the article?
A.How screenwriters affect an adapted film.
B.How the film industry develops recently.
C.What attracts audience to an adapted film.
D.What makes film adaptations challenging.

9 . Facebook Is a Big Waster

During the first decade of the 21st century, a popular and new word has come into our vocabulary—Facebook. This is the most popular social networking website on the Internet. The main idea of Facebook is that you can keep in touch with all your friends around the world who have Facebook. You can send messages to your friend’s electronic wall, put up a status saying something like “Going to the mall, I need to get a new pair of shoes” or “it’s finally the weekend!”

In spite of the benefit it does on common people, it is true that this social network is a big waster. There are about 350 million active users on this website and 67% of them are between the ages of 13-25. More than 35 million users update their status every day.     1

The highest age group who use Facebook are teenagers. Most of them keep the website running whenever they are using the computer. if they aren’t in school or when they aren’t asleep. Facebook is just changing the new generation of youngsters unconsciously. The teenage life is one of the most important stages of life.     2     It is a distraction (分心,注意力分散) to their mind as well. Nowadays, when all their homework and research are on ICT (信息技术) they would easily switch to Facebook just to check if there was anything updated among their friends.

Facebook is also where people can see the gossip among their friends, virtual arguments, relationship status and updates, who is in whose “top friends”, you can become fan of anything, join groups, post pictures and videos, play childish games, invite friends to parties or events and a lot more. Generally, all these would just disturb (扰乱;妨碍) people into living life to the fullest. It’s not just teens who become addicted, even grown-ups do. An average person spends about 55 minutes on Facebook.     3     Technology might be taking over people’s life. Furthermore, people who use Facebook through their mobile phones are 50% more active on Facebook than non-mobile phone users. This shows people using Facebook on their phone s as well as computers just can’t stand being away from the website. Facebook is like crack to some folk.

4     This would make them think how life is like without saying what’s on their mind to all their friends on the Internet. A break would also make them more active, like socializing in person. This would finally help them focus better in school or in work. Although about 80% of people who take a break would come back to Facebook within days.

A.And 2.5 billion photos are added each month.
B.Wasting it on Facebook is not encouraging in any way.
C.As a result, the average Facebook users have 130 friends who they share links with.
D.This statistic isn’t that bad but some people spend about 3-5 hours.
E.It is time people should take a break from Facebook once in a while.
