High school hints

Interviewer: Hello and welcome to School Talk! Today I'm joined by Lisa Osborne. Lisa graduated     1     our school last June and is about     2     (go) to college. Lisa, thank you for coming to share your     3     (suggestion) for high school     4     us.
Lisa: Hi, everybody. I'm very glad to be back. I feel as if high school     5     (be) only yesterday.
Interviewer: So what helped when you first started high school?
Lisa: Orientation Day was really     6     (help). It’s a fantastic opportunity for new students     7     (get) to know the school and the other students. I even made some new friends! Just keep an open mind and take part     8     as much as possible.
Interviewer: That's sound advice for sure. But how did you deal     9     new challenges, like     10     (start) a new course?
Lisa: I had a chemistry test right     11     the end of the first week. I was frightened     12     the sight of the test paper. But then I figured I’d better just go all out and see what happens. If you fail, no problem--next time you can fail better!
Interviewer: So, hold your head up, then. But life is not always easy. You must have had some moments when you were     13     (disappoint). If so, how did you deal     14     them?
Lisa: As a member of the school volleyball team, I wasn’t selected     15     the end-of-year competition. At first I was really sad,     16     later I realised that I joined the team for the love of the sport. It wasn't just about winning. So I kept     17     (work) hard     18     (support) my teammates during our training. There's always a way to be part of something you love, isn’t there?
Interviewer: Yes, I totally agree. Is there anything else    19     particular that you’d like to share     20     us?
Lisa:     21     (look) back at my high school life, the most important advice I’d give are these wonderful words from the writer Maya Angelou. She said, “    22     (be) a rainbow in someone's cloud.” So, give your friends     23     hand when they need it. And this will make you feel good, too.
Interviewer: Awesome! Well, thanks again     24     coming to speak to us, Lisa. And good luck with college.
Lisa: Thank you.

3 . While distant friendships can be a challenge to maintain, there are many ways to make them work.

Write lots of letters. Seeing a note or card from someone your friends care about in their letterbox is a sure way to make them smile.     1     The note doesn’t have to be an essay. Postcards are a lovely way to stay in touch. These could be from your holidays, in local shops or museums. And it can be especially meaningful if they’re from somewhere important to you both.

Share a show. Is there a TV series or the latest movies that you both love to watch? While you may not be able to view one side by side, you could arrange to watch it at the same time and then talk about it on the phone afterwards, sharing your reactions and opinions.     2    . And after chatting about the show, you can make time to talk about other things going on in your lives.

3     Sometimes, when a friend is far away, people find themselves losing touch. It’s normal to then feel awkward about getting back in touch. But it’s never too late to do it. Drop them a message saying you’ve been thinking about them and wondering what they’re doing. They’ll probably be thrilled to hear from you. Maintaining a long-distance friendship can take some energy and thought, but it’s well worth keeping in touch with someone that matters to you.

A.Make the effort to reconnect.
B.It shows that you always think of them.
C.This works well as it becomes a regular activity.
D.It shows that you will spare some time to make friends.

4 . When I started secondary school, aged 11, I found myself in a class with only two children I’d met before.     1    . In fact, before the end of the day one I knew all 28 of my new classmates by heart. Even in my thirties, when I found myself back in school as a teacher, I could still learn all the students in my classes with relative ease. Here are three quick memory techniques that help me.

2    . Remembering people starts with listening to what they’re called, and taking a proper look at their face. I make a point of repeating their names in my head, and silently saying something to myself about their appearance.

Spot similarities.     3    . So, who does this person look like? Do they share a name with a celebrity? Is there anything about them that reminds you of places, events, or experiences you’ve already got filed away?

A.Pay attention
B.But I soon got to know everyone
C.But I soon failed to remember their names
D.It’s always good to connect new information with things you already know

5 . The Best Medicine

As I approach the hospital wearing my white coat, I look just like any other doctor. That is until I put on my curly rainbow wig, big red nose, and add my name badge “Doctor Larry Laugh-Out-Loud”. I walk through the doors into the waiting area, where there’s a familiar atmosphere of boredom and tension. People sit uncomfortably on plastic chairs, looking through old magazines, all of which have been read hundreds of times previously. Anxious parents do what they can to comfort nervous and crying children.

In the middle of this particular scene I spot a small girl whose ankle is twice its normal size. I speak with the on-duty nurse, who tells me that Lara’s parents rushed her to the hospital after she fell off her bicycle.    1    .Although it’s the doctors and nurses who will treat her injury, it’s my job to make her feel better.

Scientific studies show that laughter produces chemicals to make people feel better, which means clown doctors can be helpful. We are specially trained clowns who work as part of a programme known as “hospital clowning”.    2    . Although the doctors and nurses did a great job, hospitals weren’t really designed for children. I spent much of the time when I was there feeling frightened and more than little bored! Being a clown doctor means I can help people by entertaining them.

Visiting hospitals and other health care facilities, we clown doctors work together with medical professionals. On a typical day, we spend our time cheering up patients, their families, and more often than not, the hospital staff, too! We do this by doing magic tricks, singing songs, telling stories and, of course, telling silly jokes. Some children, though, don’t feel like laughing, especially if they’re in pain. We have to be very sensitive and work closely with the doctors and nurses, who keep us updated on each patient.

3    . While the doctor concentrates on examining Lara’s ankle, I get her attention by doing a magic trick. Although she is clearly still in some pain, her scared and anxious look has been replaced—first by a small smile, and then by loud laughter as I “magically” produce her sock from out of my pocket. Seeing their daughter so much happier has in turn made Lara’s parents more relaxed.

And as for me? Well, when I take off my wig and my red nose, I’m still wearing a big smile, as I remember all the fun and laughter of the day. While there might be more hospital visits ahead for Lara and others, I hope that clown doctors help make it a friendlier place to visit.     4    .

A.And my magic medicine does indeed seem to do the trick
B.As the saying goes, he who laughs last laughs the best
C.After all, it really is true that “laughter is the best medicine”
D.I chose this career because of my experience of going to hospital when I was a kid
E.Since getting here, Lara has spent her time crying in pain

7 . How to make friends at a new school

Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be different, and you don’t even know where to go for your own class.     1    if you use these skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends.

Be yourself.

2    If some people don’t accept you, they’re not the kind of friends you need. People often stay together because they have similar interests. For example, someone who does a lot of sports may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.

Believe in yourself.

A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don’t keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye contact (目光接触) with other people If you see someone you know, smile or say “Hi” Introduce yourself,     4

Remember people’s names.

You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. People may become angry if you just begin by saying “Hey” each time. Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nick name. You’d be surprised how often this might come in handy.

A.Be friendly to others.
B.Making new friends can be hard, too

10 . Every time you’re online, you are bombarded (轰炸) by pictures, articles, links and videos trying to tell their stories. Unfortunately, not all these stories are true. There is a range of fake news. Read these tips, and don’t get fooled!

Check the source.     1    . Fake news websites often use addresses that sound like real newspaper, but don’t have many real stories about other topics. If you aren’t sure, click on the “About” page and look for a clear description of the organization.

Check the story in other places. Look to see if the story is on other news sites(网站) that you know and trust.     3     then it probably isn’t fake (although there are some exceptions), as many big news organizations try to check their sources before they publish a story.

If you find a news story that you know is fake, the most important advice is: don’t share it!

A.If you do find it on many other sites
B.If you know these things from online news
C.Look at the website where the story comes from
D.You can also use a tool like Google Reverse Image search
