Perri Klass and her mother, Sheil a Solomon Klass, both gifted professional writers, prove to be ideal co-writers as they examine their decades of motherhood, daughterhood, and the wonderful ways their lives have overlapped(重叠).

Perri notes with     1     how closely her own life has mirrored her mother’s: both have fulltime careers; both have published books, articles, and stories; each has three children; they both love to read. How English Gave Birth to Surprising New Languages

English has morphed into several other languages all over the world. Languages are ever changing, mixing and mutating, and sometimes they give birth to new ones. Latin is     1    to a set of languages including Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian. But how about English? What will it give birth to?

Three important factors linguists have     2    in languages giving birth to other languages are time, separation, and contact. All languages change with time, as speakers innovate and     3    and each generation reanalyzes what it received from its forebears. This does not quickly make a new language, but it can over time; Latin went through this to become Italian, but Shakespearean English and modern English are still seen as two versions of the same language, as are Ancient Greek and modern Greek.

Separation —     4    distance, cultural divergence, political independence — helps give a changed version of a language an independent identity. As Max Weinreich famously said (and linguists often repeat), a language is a(n)     5    with an army and a navy. Political separation has allowed Danish and Norse (挪威语) to be distinct.

Contact with other languages is a very important force:     6    influence leads to borrowing of words and even grammatical structures. If a language’s speakers move into an area where another language is spoken, there may be     7    cross-influence, and one or both languages may simplify grammar because their speakers are learning each other’s languages.

Sometimes a simplified version is created for the purposes of trade, often using simplified grammar mainly from one language and     8    words mainly from the other. This simplified version — a pidgin (the word pidgin comes from a modified version of the word business in one such trade language) — can come to be     9    used that children grow up speaking it and fleshing it out as a full all-purpose language: a creole. That is, a creole is a language that really has more than one “parent“ and sometimes more than two. Therefore, some people say modern English is a creole. It is a(n)     10    of Anglo-Saxon, but it also has substantial influence in core vocabulary and some grammar from older versions of Danish and Norse, and it has received a large part of its current vocabulary from French.

Make a Wish List

Most of us know of New Year’s Resolutions, where one sets intentions for the year ahead. But too often, people make their resolutions     1     — “I will no longer eat biscuits left at my desk”— and then feel unhappy. In the cold month of January, the last thing you need is to     2     your energy further by setting up a series of battles with yourself. And if you break a resolution, you feel     3    , which is a rubbish way to start the year. What you need instead are things to look forward to.

So instead, try a wish list. This involves writing down 100 things you would like to do in the year ahead. The items can be enormous or tiny, ranging from “Climb Everest” to “buy a new pencil sharper”. The main thing is that at some point it has     4     to you as something that you would like to do.

The key here is — write it down.

Do you feel any resistance to the ideas? If so, ask yourself why. What is wrong with     5     what you would like to do? Try not to say to yourself: “I can’t I don’t have the money/time/energy/skills.” Just write it down.

It helps to be     6    , so rather than “Get outdoors”,     7     a place you would like to visit. And take your time when creating it — a wish list is not built in a day. Think about it, polish it and     8     it.

Finally, you have your list. And what a work of beauty it is. Here are all the things that you would like to do. Remember to     9     them up where you can see them; let yourself consider how they can be accomplished. You’ll be amazed that so many of your dreams can be realized though the simple trick of writing them down and     10     to them.
