文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了英国人正处于心理健康危机之中,分析了导致这一现象背后的原因。
1 . Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
A.apply       B.broadly       C.complicated       D.downside       E.hardly       F.neighbors
G.overburdened       H.pills       I.re-labeling       J.turning       K.worse

Britain appears to be in a mental-health crisis. In the past decade no European country has seen a greater increase in the use of antidepressants(抗抑郁药); now only the Portuguese and Icelanders are popping more of the     1    . Around 4.5m Britons were in contact with mental-health services in 2021-22, a rise of almost l m in five years.

There are a few reasons why Britons might be unhappier than their     2    . One global poll found that teenagers in Britain were some of the loneliest in the world, with few supportive relationships and a low sense of purpose and meaning: all risk factors for poor mental health. Britain’s poorest households are also     3     off than their equivalents in France and Germany, for example, which makes them more vulnerable to conditions such as anxiety and depression. And Britain’s health system can seem more     4     than those in most other rich countries. In England alone, some 3.8 m are waiting for mental-health treatment.

Those factors might explain why more people are     5     to medication. Another reason is increased awareness. Campaigns around depression and anxiety have been particularly successful in Britain. That is     6     a good thing. A reduction in humiliation (蒙羞) has encouraged more people to seek help. Taking antidepressants – or using mental-health services — has become much more acceptable.

But there is a     7     to this, as The Economist recently reported. Surveys suggest that Britons are increasingly     8     common human emotions, such as stress and grief, as mental illnesses. “You’re going to lose any sense of what mental illness is if you start to     9     it to 30%, 50% of the population,” says Adrian Massey, author of a book called “Sick-Note Britain”.

For all the focus on anxiety and depression in campaigns, severe mental illnesses still receive too little attention. This is a problem: according to the GBD, Britain has the highest rates of severe mental illness in Europe. The causes of such conditions are unclear, but seem to involve a     10     interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Illegal drug misuse, for which Britain has among the highest rates in the region, also plays a role.

It’s widely accepted that exposure to a little dirt can be beneficial for health. This idea is supported by many studies suggesting that those who grow up in     1     with various microbes, such as farms, often have lower rates of diseases. This is believed to originate from their regular contact with a variety of microbial life.

In the 1970s, researchers discovered a soil bacterium with features that potentially reduces stress and boosts immune (免疫) response. This finding has contributed to the     2     of interest in the human microbiome (微生物群), leading people to focus on its development and applications.

Christopher A. Lowry, a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, suggests the major microbial diversity we encounter is simply through experiencing     3     in person. This interaction is crucial not just for children but adults as well, improving both mental and physical     4    . A Finnish study further demonstrated this by     5     children in kindergarten with either a forest floor or an artificial yard. Those in contact with the natural environment showed stronger immune systems, and the effects were consistent over time.

Researchers conclude that participating in     6     activities like mountain biking, hiking, and gardening not only exposes individuals to these helpful microbes but also helps reduce symtoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Gardening, for instance, offers a healing experience,     7     real connection with the soil as you plant and care for vegetables or flowers.

Moreover, creating habitats that attract wildlife or participating in community agriculture can also motivate one’s exposure to beneficial soil microbes. Websites like U-Pick Farm Locator and PickYourOwn.org offer     8     to participate in farming, even for those without their own garden space.

Getting invovled with soil and nature in     9     ways, such as making mud pies or building fairy gardens, proves effective in mental improvement. It echoes the idea that direct     10     with the earth can be profoundly satisfying and pleasant.

A. article               B. serve               C. result               D. define            E. specific          F. seems
G. switching        H. respectively          I. behave          J. social               K. pose

Are you an "I person" or an "E person"?

These two personality labels in particular are widely discussed online. They are parts of a popular personality test called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. All of the results have four letters, and there are 16 results in total. "I" and "E" refer to "introverted" and "extroverted"     1     .

Even if someone is typically quiet, many online discussions suggest that an "I" person can still     2     towards outgoing at times. For example, when an introverted person with a group of introverted friends might become more     3     like an "E" person.

According to psychologists, this idea of temporarily     4     personalities is called "masking". That is hiding your true personality in     5     situations. "Human beings want to feel they belong, and they might become people-pleasers to do so, "wrote the MasterClass website.

Using the MBTI to identify and describe someone's personality     6     fun. However, I went too far at one time. My sister was excitedly making a day-to-day travel plan when I remembered from an     7     that "P people" don't like to make or stick to plans, so I said to her, "You don't seem like a ‘P person’. ""Why?" she asked back. "Since when do I need to follow what my personality test tells me to do?" It was then I realized I'd taken the     8     too seriously.

The MBTI personality test may show something you don't know about yourself and can even     9     as a fun ice-breaker when meeting new friends. And that's all it is-for fun. Knowing someone's MBTI result doesn't mean you really know this person. And those four letters of yours don't     10     who you are.

Online, where posts can spread rapidly and everything leaves a trail, words can also be harsh. Often the only defence people have is     1    their online profiles entirely. But that means giving up a way to interact with others in a positive way. Bullying happens where young people spend their time-at present, mainly Weibo, Wechat, Hupu and Tieba. A widely suggested “solution” is to     2     teenagers to particular platforms. But then they will migrate to others.

Facebook and Instagram use artificial intelligence to spot verbal     3    . Most social-media sites have instructions on how to report     4     material and block other users. For example, Facebook this week announced new ways for users to avoid “unwanted, offensive or hurtful experiences”. However, a(n)     5     survey in Britain found that 70% of people thought that social-media companies do too little to prevent bullying.

More school-aged children have reported being cyberbullied than before the pandemic, according to the report     6    by the World Health Organization (WHO). The study surveyed more than 279,000 young people from 44 countries and regions. In Wales, where nearly 37,000 young people were surveyed, 17% reported falling     7    to cyberbullying. The Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey suggests the proportion of adolescents who reported being cyberbullied has witnessed some     8     increases since 2018, from 12% to 15% for boys and 13% to 16% for girls.

Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, a WHO     9    , said: “Focusing on virtual types of peer violence is now a priority to safeguard the health and     10     of populations of adolescents and young people, and cyberbullying must be viewed as a major issue for societies.”

The recorder (竖笛) is an instrument of “incredible functions” for too many generations. But now, it faces extinction. Fewer and fewer people     1     it,with one of the UK’s top music schools reporting an 80% drop in the number of young people playing it in the last 10 years.

Tom Redmond, the principal of Chetham’s school of music in Manchester, said only three of its pupils practised the recorder,     2     15 a decade ago. “More pupils were playing the piano or other instruments,” said Redmond. “The ones which have really flourished are the ones spent more time alone playing. Whereas the instruments that are more socially or orchestral based, like the recorder     3     there has been a decline. Plus, pupils now have more alternatives when     4     a hobby.”

Redmond also said that this problem     5     great attention because it extended “beyond the recorder itself and was a reflection of the future of music. “Like removing any plant or animal from an ecosystem, removing the recorder has a huge ripple effect beyond just the instrument.” he said.

The instrument is     6     revival and its future is so threatened that the European Recorder Teachers Association is trying to     7     again so it does not go the way of the lute. Chris Orton, a recorder tutor and chair of the ERTA, is leading the fight against the instrument’s extinction. When receiving an interview     8     the association, he said, “The recorder is increasingly overlooked by students, and yet it has a rich history and incredible attractions. Bands like Led Zeppelin and the Beatles have used the recorder in their songs. As well as     9     beautiful sounds, it’s an accessible instrument in that it is low-cost compared to other woodwind instruments, and it’s light and easy to carry.” Chris Orton hopes more young students can take up the recorder.
