Cloning occurs when an egg splits and creates     1    . The first animal to be successfully cloned by scientists was a sheep called Dolly. Despite the initial success, she suffered from an illness and died at the age of six. Since then, other animals such as goats and camels have been cloned but have also experienced similar health problems. Scientists are not sure if this problem will continue to happen     2     .

3     with other species, attempts to clone monkeys have been far more complicated and took Chinese scientists many years. The reason why they wanted to break this technical     4    was that monkey cloning might offer     5     as to how to cure illness and disease. As the technology improves and becomes more     6     there would be even greater benefits.

While some people see cloning as     7     for medical and scientific development, others have     8     concerns about how it could be used. They worry that this technology will lead to cloning of other species. There is a risk that this could be     9     by some companies or people.

Whether it is a     10     or a curse for humanity remains to be seen and depends on how we choose to use it.

I don’t get so much time to read these days, but     1     I will always     2     a science fiction book off the shelf when I have a little time. It’s such a fun genre! I’m currently reading a book called The Third Option.

The book is set in the future at a time when the world is experiencing a long and     3     war with another planet. The other     4     are trying to find a new planet to live on and have decided that the Earth will be theirs. Being more advanced than us, they do not want peace but rather to destroy us.

In a     5     attempt to win the war, humans decide to develop a very deadly     6     that will kill the enemy but also destroy the environment of the Earth. The main character of the book is a scientist called Kate Jones who decides that the     7     of the Earth is too important. Things have changed so much since our parents’ and grandparents’ time, especially when it comes to jobs and careers. When our parents were starting to find work, the     1     of staying in the same     2     for your entire life was very common. Nowadays, that idea would be considered really unusual!

There will be new     3     21st century skills that we will have to have. For example, a university degree is still useful, but technology developments mean that many skills we have now are unlikely     4     in the future.     5     is one thing, but if we really want to succeed in our careers we have to be     6     thinking of new and exciting ways to do things. It won’t be enough to have only a general understanding of our area of work but we should keep learning until we become     7    . And given that people will not stay in the same career for long, we can expect that we will have to go back to education and training at some stage     8     to work in another field. In fact, we might have to do that     9    !

Jobs change at an amazing     10     these days, and if we can keep up, we can have really exciting and rewarding future careers.

A friend of mine once asked me: “Why should a Chinese take time to learn a language that is not his own?” Obviously he has     1    in learning a foreign language. He is not the only one who is mentally against English learning. One reason, as I suspect, is the way English is taught. The emphasis on memorization is such that no     2    is left in the process of learning, only endless annoyance. What students are presented in the classroom is not the language in real-world     3    . A Chinese student with extremely high scores for American standardized tests was     4     into one of the most famous universities. But his professors soon found out that he could    5     understand the lesson. Suspecting that he    6    in the tests, the school demanded he repeat them. Again, he passed with high scores. Not till then did they realize that the student had mastered the techniques for dealing with the tests, not    7    the skills of using the language.

Many people take TOFEL, IELTS, GRE, annual Band 4 and Band 6 exams not because they work in areas where English is a(n)    8    tool,but because they have to do it for job promotion or enrolment in certain programs.

Must English learning be such a pain in the neck?

Create a(n)    9     where learning English is natural and painless. Don’t make it compulsory for people whose work or major does not require it. China will not become more    10     by adding millions of people who can only say a simple “Hello”.

Chinese traders were recorded as making voyages to the north coast of Australia from the 1750s, but were probably visiting Australia long before. Chinese men arrived in Australia in small numbers after the 1788 British settlement as free settlers and criminals. A small population grew rapidly after 1848 under a system of indentured (契约的) labor, after China had     1     its ports to foreign trade in 1842. They worked in rural New South Wales as cooks, farm laborers and etc.

Indentured Chinese     2     worked in all colonies variously as station hands, plantation workers, miners, on public works, cabinet makers, personal servants and in laundries. Most came from the south-eastern provinces of Guangdong and Fujian.

Due to labor     3     in West Australia, the Colonial Government organized Chinese contract labor between 1847 and 1898, most working as laborers, cooks and gardeners. Many Chinese people came from rural backgrounds and brought with them     4     and water management skills. By 1885, there were 54 Chinese market gardens in Sydney. By 1901, 67% of New South Wales market gardeners were Chinese.

Gold rushes in Victoria in the 1850s and New South Wales in the 1860s significantly     5     the population of Chinese immigrants in Australia; about 45,000 prospectors arrived in Victoria alone in 1854-58. Numbers continued to increase as gold and other     6     were discovered in Queensland, Northern Territory and Tasmania.

When mining became less     7    , many Chinese people worked successfully to provide goods and services such as furniture making, market gardening, fishing and, particularly, store-keeping including the import and export of goods from overseas. Chinese goods, especially tea, silk, vegetables, herbs and other spices were highly sought-after items of trade by non-Chinese people. Tea rooms, importing and selling many varieties of tea, were very popular. Chinese silk was turned into     8     evening wear and cloaks by Chinese tailors and seamstresses.

Today there is a culturally diverse Chinese     9     in Australia with links to south-eastern China as well as Vietnam and Hong Kong. The Chinese communities in Australia are brought together every year by     10     of Lunar New Year.
