2 . How to Teach Kids to Be Calm

Children often get overwhelmed by emotions. There`re some gentle but powerful ways to bring your child to a state of peace and teach him how to calm himself.

1    However stressful it is to deal with a screaming child, you`ll only make things worse if you shout. Take deep breaths, remember you’re an adult and use a calm voice.     2

Speak to your child about what has caused an outburst after he has calmed down. It’s much easier to address the causes of lack of calm when the child is in a state of calm. As soon as he is old enough to talk, encourage your child to express his feelings and explain what was wrong.    3     And discuss with him how he could have addressed those feelings in a calm way.

Teach your child to recognize the signs that he is about to lose his calm.     4    If you notice that he is getting angry, stop and say you have noticed he is tensing his body, starting to throw things—or whatever behavior he is displaying. Tell him you have noticed that he does those things when he is angry and ask him how he is feeling and what he needs to do to help him stay calm.

Teach your child a routine to go through when he or you recognize that he is starting to lose his calm. Find a quiet place where he can calm down. Show him how to take three deep breaths.     5     The important thing is that he has a method he can use each time he is going to lose his calm.

A.Keep yourself calm.
B.Prevention is better than cure.
C.Stay close to your child when he is angry.
D.Listen patiently even if his problems don’t make sense to you.
E.An angry adult isn’t a good model for teaching a child calmness.
F.Or teach him a simple gentle song about happiness or calmness.
G.Set aside a time each day for you and your child to be calm together.

9 . Prince Diana was known for her habit many people today don’t pay attention to, but a new study shows you might want to reconsider.

While performing her royal duties as the Princess of Wales, Diana made time to write thank-you letters. In the book Diana: Her True Story, the author Andrew Morton wrote about Diana’s determination to send thank-you cards, noting that after her royal wedding to Prince Charles in 1981 she “sat down and answered many of the 47.000 letters of congratulation and 10,000 gifts which the wedding generated (产生) ” , with the help of extra staff.

It turned out that Diana understood the significance (意义) of a thank-you card much more than others do. According to a recent study, many people underestimate (低估) the value of a thank-you letter and how much happiness the recipient (接受者) will get from it.

The author of Modern Etiquette (礼仪) for a Better Life, notes that what stands out about a thank-you note compared with a text or email is the time that goes into the act. “It is a special touch,” she said. “It’s going above and beyond what is generally expected because it means that you’ve taken some extra step.”

If you’re now feeling like sending a thank-you card to someone for a gift, for a favor or simply for their time, we have a few suggestions. Jacqueline Whitmore, an etiquette expert says that you shouldn’t be discouraged if you are a bit delayed (延迟) in sending out a note of appreciation.

“A late thank-you note is better than none at all,” she said. Also, a tone that’s warm and friendly along with personal stationery (信纸) for more of a signature look should be included.

It won’t be from Kensington Palace, but it will still have an original touch.

1. Why do many people pay no attention to sending thank-you letters?
A.Because they think it hard to do so.
B.Because they are not from royal families
C.Because they attach less value to a thank-you letter.
D.Because they have no congratulation letters to answer.
2. What does the author mainly want to express in Para. 4?

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。中国驻英大使刘晓明称英国禁止华为参与其 5G 基础设施建设是一个错误决定,并称这对中英关系、英国自身及华为都是黑暗的一天,英国可能会失去机会。

10 . China’s ambassador to the United Kingdom said the decision to remove the Chinese technology company Huawei from Britain’s 5G infrastructure (基础设施) was a “dark day for the United Kingdom”, and could be a missed opportunity for the UK to lead in the sector.

The British government last week announced it would ban UK mobile providers from buying new Huawei 5G equipment after the end of 2020 and asked telecom operators to remove all the Chinese company’s 5G kit (装备) from their networks by 2027.

Ambassador Liu Xiaoming said the UK decision on Huawei is a mistake and that the British government would struggle to achieve its ambitious plan to have a full coverage 5G network by 2025.

Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, Liu said: “This is a very bad decision. This is a dark day for Huawei. It’s a dark day for China-UK relations. It’s an even darker day for the United Kingdom, because you will miss the opportunity to be a leading country.”

While some fear a so-called national security risk posed by the Chinese technology giant with its 5G network, Liu said there is no hard, solid evidence to suggest Huawei technology would be a threat to the UK.

“They’ve been here for 20 years. They have made a huge contribution not only to the telecom industry of this country. They have fulfilled their corporate (法人的) responsibility. They have helped the UK to develop.” Liu said.

The British government has pledged to make the UK completely 5G and ful-fibre connected by 2025, and Liu said Huawei can help to deliver that “but now it seems to me the UK just kicks them out and, to use the media words, to get rid of them under the pressure from the United States.”

During the interview, the ambassador echoed a point made by leading British scholar and sinologist Martin Jacques, author of the book When China Rules the World, and who wrote in a recent tweet “history turns full circle”.

“In 1793 Chinese Emperor Qianlong told the British King: ‘We don’t have the slightest need of your country’s manufactures (产品) .’ So marked the start of China’s 150 year decline. In 2020 UK tells China that it has no need of China’s latest technology,” Jacques tweeted.

1. Why did Liu Xiaoming say the UK decision on Huawei is a mistake?
A.Because Britain is not likely to have a full coverage 5G network in future.
B.Because it will be hard for Britain to complete the 5G network as planned.
C.Because Huawei has made a huge contribution to the telecom industry of the UK.
D.Because British telecom operators are unwilling to remove Huawei’s 5G kit.
2. What does the underlined word “sinologist” in Para. 8 mean?
A.A person that runs a particular business.
B.A person whose job is concerned with politics.
C.A person who studies, teaches, or writes about economics.
D.A person who researches Chinese history and language and culture.
3. What content may follow the last paragraph of the news report?
A.How Huawei technology has been applied in the UK.
B.How the 5G network will be set up in Britain.
C.How Huawei has grown to be a Chinese technology giant.
D.How China will make response to the decision of the British government.
4. What can be the best title for the news report?
A.UK’s Huawei decision could be lost chance, warns ambassador
B.Huawei technology would be a threat to the UK, says ambassador
C.Britain needs to buy new Huawei 5G equipment, suggests ambassador
D.Huawei has fulfilled their corporate responsibility, explains ambassador
