3 . Not everyone feels a connection with their cultural heritage, but many people do. What is it about cultural heritage that draws these people to it? Some may think traditions are old and no longer relevant, and that they are unnecessary during these modern times. But for others, exploring cultural heritage offers a variety of benefits.
Culture can give people a connection to certain social values, beliefs, religions and customs. It allows them to identify with others of similar mindsets and backgrounds. Cultural heritage can provide a sense of unity and belonging within a group and allows us to better understand previous (先前) generations and the history of where we come from.
Another benefit that comes from preserving cultural heritage as a whole is the communal support. Those that identify strongly with a certain heritage are often more likely to help out others in that same community. Real estate mogul (房地产大亨) Carl Mattone and his family are often sighted at fundraisers for local Catholic schools. Mattone was raised Catholic and attended Holy Cross High School in New York.
Cultural heritage is made up of many things large and small. We can see it in the buildings, townscapes, and even in archaeological remains. Culture can be perceived through natural sources as well: the agriculture and landscapes associated with it. It is preserved through books, artifacts, objects, pictures, photographs, art, and oral tradition. Cultural heritage is in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the religions we follow, and the skills we learn. Sometimes we can touch and see what makes up a culture; other times it is intangible.

In the farmers' market, there were many other stalls (摊位) with all kinds of food for sale as well as colourful rows of fruit and vegetables set out on tables. Cooked food stalls filled the air with the wonderful smells of hot tasty snacks, and the smell of fresh coffee was everywhere.
"Wow," Gus cried out, "Jam (果酱)!"
Just in front of him, there was a jam stall that sold all kinds of home-made jam. But the only kind Gus wanted was strawberry, so he bought a jar. He couldn't help but taste the jam immediately. It was OK, he frowned (皱眉) and shook his head, but never as good as Rose's, whose jam was just magic.
Rose was his neighbour, an elderly lady who lived alone but liked company now and again. Her doorbell was usually too quiet before Gus and his mom moved to the village after his father's death. Gus often rang her doorbell and asked whether she needed anything from the supermarket as he and his mother were going to town. In return, Rose would often give Gus a jar of jam. Gus was amazed how jam could be so delicious, so whenever free he would be at Rose's home watching her make the super jam.
Suddenly, an idea struck Gus. Probably he could try that to make some money and help his mum. He then bought a bag of potatoes for Rose for her kind offer of wonderful jam.

Slowly Ethan poured the milk into the bowl so that the corn flakes rose above the rim just like Nick’s. He was a little unhappy as Nick, his big brother, would leave home for his college after breakfast. He asked Nick what he would have for his breakfast at college, who smiled, hugged the corn flake box and joked that he’d better take that together.
On the way to the airport, Mom dropped off Ethan at his school. Ethan was a little unhappy because he couldn’t go to see Nick off as it was class photo day. The brothers hugged each other good-bye. Nick grinned, softly reminding Nick to smile big for the camera. Ethan waved at the car until it turned the corner.
Ethan missed seeing his brother at breakfast every day. From time to time Nick sent photos home. One was of him studying in the library with a tall stack (堆) of books. Ethan stared at the photo for a long time. Nick was smiling, but he looked tired. Maybe it was hard to get enough sleep at college.
A couple of moths later, Mom decided to visit Nick for his birthday. Ethan started busily preparing his backpack. He packed a box of corn flakes. After thinking a long time, he found Nick’s pillow and tried to squish it into the backpack. Seeing that, Mom smiled saying Nick had everything he needed at college. Ethan got puzzled. Then what should I take? he wondered. It wasn’t long before Ethan found some scissors. He cut one of his new school photos and slid it into the pocket of his backpack.
