4 . Cigarette smoking is injurious to health—everyone knows that. Well, till a few decades ago, people were unaware that smoking could cause lung and heart diseases and cigarette packs never had a warning on them, like they do now.
In recent years, research has shown that smoking is dangerous and it has now been made compulsory for all cigarette manufacturers to have a warning printed on the cover. It states that “Cigarette smoking is injurious to health.”
However, cigarette manufacturers do not want people to stop buying their product after reading the warning. So, they have found a convenient way of dealing with the problem. They print the warning in such small letters that one can barely read them.
European health authorities are now insisting that the size of the letters used in these health warnings should be increased. One British engineering firm, Molins, that supplies machines to make cigarettes, has gone a step ahead. The company wants to patent a talking cigarette packet that recites the health warning every time you open it.
The talking packet uses a technology similar to the one used in musical cards. A stiff plastic strip is attached to the lid of the cigarette packet. When the pack is opened, the strip comes into contact with a tiny battery cell (the kind used in watches), which is wired to a small speaker on the base of the pack. This triggers a playback of the health warning.
Will cigarette manufacturers choose these talking packets?
Anti-smoking organizations are thrilled with the invention and are insisting that all cigarette manufacturers should use these packs. However, without government intervention, cigarette manufacturers will pay no attention to the request and continue to use tiny-lettered health warnings on their packets.

5 . I recently had an idea to delete my Facebook account. I've played with the idea for a while, but I always hesitated when it came to actually pulling the trigger(扳机). It was1 a.m. and I was up late studying. After closing my book, I decided to take one last glance at my Facebook page. You know what I'm talking about, you've done it. One more glance just to see if anyone has posted on your wall. Then it hit me. "Dear God," I thought, “What on earth am I doing?” Had it really come to that I had to check my Facebook at l a.m. before I went to bed? How silly! I knew at that moment it had to be done. I had to pull the trigger. I took a deep breath, and with a few quick clicks of the mouse, my Facebook account was no more.
Some people were confused. One of my students wondered when I'll be back on Facebook. He claimed I wouldn't last five days. It's already been six. Overall, my world seems that much smaller, and I really like that. In a world of online communication that lacks true relational depth, it saves time in my already busy life. You don't realize how much time you waste on something like that until it's gone. I'm looking for purity(单纯)in my life, and with one less reason to be online I get one less reason to be exposed to material that can prove to be harmful for my soul. I'm also trying to improve upon the quality of relationships and community around me, and although Facebook is great for networking, I'd much rather sit down with you face to face, or at the very least over the phone to communicate.

6 . Many visitors see a trip to Hawaii, Maui in particular, as a destination only reserved for summers. Those who know this, however, love to visit the island in the fall.
The fall season in Maui is quite possibly the best time of year to visit. It is directly in the middle of the two busiest seasons of the year, namely summer and winter. What does that mean for the visitors who choose to plan their vacations during the fall season? Less lines, less crowds, and the chance to communicate with the locals.
Fall in Maui is the best time to head off to Wailea Beach, where the waters are still warm enough to swim even when the air temperature begins to drop. This is also the perfect time for whale watching as the whales begin to migrate during the fall. Visitors can stand on the beach, and still see the whales moving through the water.
The annual Aloha Festivals in Maui also takes place during the fall season. Aloha
Festivals, once called Aloha Week, was created sixty years ago to celebrate the culture of Hawaii. It starts in early September and runs through the end of October. Canoe enthusiasts also head to Maui every year in the fall, to take part in the annual 41-mile canoe race. People can enjoy the festivities and events, even without taking part in the race itself.
For some travelers, there is no better time to see Maui than in the fall.

The Girl Who Never Talked
I never really felt like I fit in. I was a freshman in high school and my only close friend was Bella, whom I had known since kindergarten. Bella is and will always be one of my best friends and we often play together. However, she had other close friends too, but I didn't. I was on the volleyball team, and on the court I knew exactly who I was and where I was supposed to be. I loved all of my teammates, but when we were sitting in the stands before and after games I would just sit there quietly, totally unsure of myself.
At school, no one spoke to me and I didn't know how to get along with them. It seems like the only time anyone talked to me was just to jokingly say, "You are so quiet!... do you ever talk?" I wanted to talk, but I just couldn't find the words. I never felt like I knew what to say in a big group of people. All of these made me upset.
One Saturday after our game, Bella was supposed to come over and spend the night at my house. We always had a lot of fun together. I wished that I could talk to the other girls the way I talked to her. But before we left the gym that day, some of the other volleyball girls invited her to go to the movies with them. Since Bella had already made plans with me, they asked if I would like to go to the movies with them too. I agreed and was happy to have a chance to join them.
One of the moms drove us, and we all piled into the back seat of her Suburban-Rhiannon, Destinee, Christine, Bella, and me. I was kind of nervous at first, but once it was just us five, I came out of my shell (壳). For the first time in my life, I really felt like I was a part of the conversation, instead of just sitting there listening. It turned out that I had a lot to say.

9 . How to Teach Your Kids to Enjoy Hiking
Hiking is one of my family's favorite things to do. Ever since my kids were babies, we've been getting out of the house on most weekends to explore and get exercise.
In fact, there is no secret.
I've made a list of the things I think about whenever we head out on a multi-hour hike. This list has expanded over the years, as I've learned what works and what doesn't.
Eat before you leave and carry food and water.
Show them a route map. Kids like knowing where they are in the world, and maps are perfect for helping them understand that. I always take some time before we leave to show them where we are and where we're headed. Point out landmarks they will see. Talk about how long it will take.
Invite another family to join you, especially one whose kids know how to hike, too. Having company will motivate all of the children to push forward.
A.How do we benefit from hiking? |
B.But how can we manage to do it? |
C.And I'd like to share my list with you. |
D.So they don't ask me, " Are we there yet?" |
E.Not every family's list will look the same. |
F.It's just years of training that gets them to this point. |
G.We usually have a quick bite before we set off. |
10 . The Tour de France is a bike race, which lasts over three weeks and covers 3,351 kilometers. Held in France in July, it is really tough and bikers have to race up and down mountains, on winding, dangerous roads. Every day, he riders finish a different part of the race, called a "stage". Every stage can have a different winner, and each lay, the total time is added up. The person who is leading wears a yellow shirt to show that they are winners.
But there are no women in the Tour de France. For years, women have been trying to change that. From 1984 to 2009, there was a women's Tour de France, run under different names by different organizations. But in 2009, it ended completely.
The Tour de France is organized by Amaury Sport Organization (ASO). In 2014, ASO began holding a race for women called La Course. But La Course is not a long, challenging race.
To make people more aware that a women's Tour de France is necessary, a French cycling club has taken on an unusual project called "J-1". As part of J-1 , since 2015 , a group of women has been riding the exact same come as the men' s Tour de France, just one day earlier.
Women look part in the J-1 project again in 2021. But next year, they won't have to. That's because ASO has announced that in July of 2022, they will be holding the Tour de France Femmes.
The Tour de France Femmes will be an eight-day race with many stages which will start when the men's Tour de France is finished. Christian Prudhomme, the organizer, says this time they are hoping to set the race up in a way that it will make money, allowing the event to continue.
