3 . How to Break Bad Habits
Habits are ways of dealing with issues in your environment. You often do not think about them. James Clear, in his book Atomic Habits, describes a four-step process by which habits are made. These steps are cue (提示), craving (渴望), response, and reward.
A cue is a signal.
James Clear notes that to break bad habits, you need to think about each step in the habit-making process. In the cell phone example, the cue is seeing the cell phone. The craving is the desire or urge to check your phone.
The important thing to remember is that people can change their habits. Habit changes take time.

4 . “We are what we eat”—or so the saying goes. From high-calorie meals to low-fat lunches, much of our health depends on what we eat. We know about the benefits of eating properly for our physical well-being, but food and cooking it is proving to be good for our mental well-being as well.
Some people are now advocating the therapeutic (治疗的)value of cooking food. It’s not just about the end result but the experience someone goes through.
TV chef and author Nadiya Hussain agrees that cooking is great for helping our mind. She loves to bake and became the champion of the TV show, The Great British Bake Off. She says that “Baking’s always been about therapy... It’s never really been about the cake.” And she thinks that baking is an important tool for our socialisation and mental health.
Certainly, creating some delicious food has helped some of us get through the recent lockdown; it’s helped take our mind off things and given us something to do. People have said that kneading dough (面团) to make bread, for example, has given them a sense of calm and control. Research has shown that doing creative tasks, like cooking, makes us feel happier.
Nicole Farmer, who studies how food impacts our biology, behavior and mental health, told BBC online that “cooking represents the shared human experience of food, and nurturing people through food, so I think that’s where it integrates opportunity into immediate positive emotions”.
Of course, cooking can be a very sociable activity and sharing the end result, a rewarding experience. Hopefully, as we start to mix with friends and family again, we can enjoy the benefits once more and put us all in the right frame of mind.

5 . A major new facility to pull CO2 out of the atmosphere has started operating in Iceland. Experts say the new technology could eventually play an important role in reducing greenhouse gases.
The plant in southwest Iceland is the biggest of its kind. It is able to capture 900 tons of CO2 every year but it needs heat and electricity to work. It is using energy produced from waste and is built on the roof of a waste incineration (焚烧) plant, and through the burning of rubbish, energy is generated.
Human-sized fans are built into a series of boxes. They take CO2 out of the air, catching it in sponge like filters (过滤器). The filters are exploded with heat, freeing the gas, which is then mixed with water and pumped (用泵输送) into deep underground caves, where over time it turns into dark-gray stone. Pumping CO2 into the ground is just one way to deal with it.
The makers are also selling the gas to be used again. The CO2 can be captured just a few 100 miles away. It is pumped through an underground pipeline directly into a greenhouse.
Vegetables and plants love CO2 and higher concentrations of the gas within the greenhouse improve the growth of plants.
By 2050, humanity will need to pull nearly a billion metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year through direct air capture technology to achieve carbon neutral goals.
The plant in Iceland will be able to capture 4,00 metric tons annually—just a small amount of what will be necessary, but one that Climeworks, the company that built it, says can grow rapidly as efficiency improves and costs decrease.
“This is a market that does not yet exist, but a market that urgently needs to be built,” said Christoph Gebald who co-founded Climeworks. “This plant is really the blueprint to further increase the size and really industrialize.”

6 . My kid’s new school is a construction area now. Even though the new building is very exciting, in the meantime there is no real playground for all the kids to use. They just run around the front of the school during the lunch break.
This gets me thinking about starting a book club for the upper elementary kids to meet in during lunch. This idea has the added benefit of giving my very shy daughter a chance to make some connections with other kids who like books as much as she does.
This is how I’m starting our book club. After getting permission from the principal and finding a space in the school to hold our meetings, I’ll send out a flier (传单) in our Friday school notes with my contact information. At our first meeting we’ll think of a name for our book club and decide together on the first two books we will read.
I absolutely love the idea of a mother-daughter book club. The reason is that my friend, mother of a teenage daughter, told me she always tried to befriend all the mothers of her daughter’s friends. As a group they’re better able to know what the girls are doing.
Now that my daughter is in the fourth grade and we’re at a new school, I’m feeling especially drawn to start forming relationships with the mothers of her friends. A book club seems like a good way to do that with the added benefit of getting to open up communication between daughters and mothers, because in a few years a lot of our daughters won’t really want to talk to us.
