2 . The government of Singapore has created a highly developed system that turns wastewater into drinking water. The system involves a network of tunnels and high-technology treatment centers.
Reused wastewater can now meet 40 percent of Singapore's water demand. The country's water agency says it expects to meet 55 percent of Singapore's water demand by the year 2060. Most of the water is used for microchip manufacturing centers and cooling systems in buildings. But some of it is added to the country's drinking water supplies. The system helps reduce ocean pollution, as only a small amount of the treated water is sent into the sea.
The United Nations estimates that 80 percent of the world's wastewater flows back into the oceans without being treated or reused. Singapore has few natural water sources. The island nation has long had to depend mostly on supplies from neighboring Malaysia.
Low Pei Chin is chief engineer of the water reclamation department of the Public Utilities Board. She told reporters with Agence France-Press, "Singapore lacks natural resources, and it is limited in space, which is why we are always looking for ways to explore water sources and stretch our water supply." One major plan is to "collect every drop" and "reuse endlessly," she added.
The Changi Water Reclamation Plant on Singapore's eastern coast is the main part of the country's recycling system. Parts of the water treatment center are underground. Wastewater enters the center through a 48-kilometer tunnel that is linked to sewers. The center contains a large system of steel pipes, tubes, tanks, cleaning systems and other machinery. It can treat up to 900 million liters of wastewater a day. In one building, a network of air flow systems has been put in place to keep the air smelling as fresh as possible. Waste that arrives at the plant goes through a cleaning process before powerful pumps send it flowing to areas above ground for more treatment.
There, the treated water receives additional cleaning. Bacteria and viruses are removed through highly developed cleaning processes and disinfected with ultraviolet radiation.
Singapore is also in the process of expanding its recycling system. The country will add another underground tunnel and a major water treatment center to serve the western half of the island. Officials expect work on the center to be completed by 2025. By the time the expansion is finished, Singapore will have spent about $7.4 billion on its water treatment systems.

Preeti and Keerti were two naughty twins. They hated getting up in the mornings and were always late for their college lectures. If their teachers were angry at their delay, the twins blamed the heavy traffic. They claimed that they had to waste an endless amount of time everyday waiting at red lights. One day, the Chemistry professor could bear it no more. He gave them a warning. “If you do not show up on time tomorrow to do your lab work, I will fail both of you,” he thundered. Preeti and Keerti were in hot water. Soon they hit upon a plan.
They contacted their friend, Billo, a computer lover. After giving him some creamy dark chocolate, they urged him to hack (非法侵入) into the city’s computer system and control the traffic lights. Billo went along with the girls’ plan. He managed to introduce a bug into the computer program, and ensured that the traffic lights along the girls’ usual route would always stay green. The girls were overjoyed. Now they could drive along the roads at high speeds, and never have to worry about stopping at red lights anymore. They even began managing to reach their classes on time in the mornings.
Within a week, the citizens of the town began to get upset with the seemingly strange behavior of the traffic lights. Billo’s older brother, Suraj, got to the bottom of the mystery behind the lights when he happened to overhear Billo and the twins gloating (沾沾自喜) over the success of their naughty plan. He knew he had to teach them a lesson and make them see the stupidity of their ways.

5 . Tips to Improve Muscle Recovery (恢复)
Have you just started up with a new workout regimen (运动养生), only to feel tired throughout the week? It is common when you perform an exercise that you aren’t used to or haven’t done in a while.
Don’t ignore your warm-up
Not making the time for even a short cooldown post-workout can set you up for injuries and aches. Move muscle recovery along by taking at least five minutes to do some stretching, which involves moving a muscle or joint as far as it can go and then holding it for a period of time.

Sleep is your body’s time to repair and recover. Your emotional, mental and physical health all benefits from adequate sleep. Try staying away from screens an hour or two before bed and use your bed only for sleep. Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day.

6 . A blind Chinese climber reached the summit (顶点) of Qomolangma, known in the West as Mount Everest, on Monday morning, becoming the first blind person from Asia ever to conquer the world’s highest summit.
Zhang Hong, 46, reached the top from the Nepali side, along with three high-altitude guides.
Zhang, who was born in Chongqing, lost his sight at the age of 21. He now works at Fukang Hospital Affiliated with Tibet University in Lhasa. As Zhang began his climb of Qomolangma, which is 8,848. 86 meters above sea level, his colleagues in Lhasa were excited to hear the news of his success.
“Many people may have doubted his attempt of climbing at first, but I was confident in him from the beginning,” said Kyila, the secretary of the Fukang Angel Foundation, who also is a blind person. “I knew before that he could make it, and he did make it. I am really happy for him. He is a model for blind people to encourage them to chase their dreams.”

Lotse had shared the story of the blind US mountaineer Erik Weihenmayer, who climbed Qomolangma in May 2001. Zhang was touched by the story, which ignited his dream of climbing.
As an amateur climber for years, Zhang had conquered three mountains above the altitude of 6,000 meters before climbing the world’s highest summit. He had begun preparing for the Qomolangma climb in 2019. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic (流行病), all mountaineering teams on Qomolangma were canceled in Nepal and China last year, and he had to wait until recently to finally make the attempt.

10 . Sarah Vang runs a high school Hmong (苗族) Club in Fresno. She founded the club last year and took it upon herself to look out for new Hmong students. “There are a lot of Hmong freshmen,” she says, “and I just want to tell them, ‘Join the Hmong Club! I’m so happy you’re Hmong!’ I love my community so much.” But the love came only after years of fighting with her identity. Sarah didn’t speak much Hmong while growing up and her parents didn’t talk with her about their past life and why they came to the United States.
She didn’t change her ideas until one day her teacher showed the class a documentary (纪录片) about the Hmong in Fresno where eight teenagers killed themselves between 1998 and 2001. “Once I saw my brother’s face, I started crying,” Sarah says. Sarah’s brother was one of those teenagers. “My teacher didn’t know that that was my brother and that the person they were interviewing was my dad,” she says.
After her brother’s death, Sarah’s dad, Peter Vang, talked to the families of the other teenagers killing themselves. “I cannot save my son anymore because he’s gone,” Vang says, “but I want to ensure other parents save their kids.” Vang learned the kids had different troubles, but he found a common theme. “These kids didn’t have an identity,” he says. “They don’t know who they are and where they come from.”
Peter says that for kids who want to have a better sense of their identity, they need to learn about their history. After his hard work for a decade, Sarah’s school offered a Hmong class and Fresno State University introduced a course about Hmong. He hopes that by knowing about their language, history and culture, younger Hmong can decide who they want to be.
