5 . Coursework, quizzes, and activities can all get you, a high school student, too stressful sometimes.
i. Find out why you’re worried about your results.
Think you’re not prepared? Don’t know how you’re going to learn everything in time? Or do you just get nervous in test conditions?
ii. See the improvements to ease your worries.
Are you already doing hours of revision and are still worried? Maybe you’re not seeing the results of your revision.
iii.
While it’s great to realise that all people are having a hard time with revision, it’s important you don’t get used to thinking negatively about your results. Positive thinking has been shown to build up confidence and reduce anxiety. So even if you’re talking about your fear for the results, make sure you’re imagining yourself passing with success.
iv. Study now!
A.You probably have some scary thoughts about your final results. |
B.The best way to stop worrying is to take action. |
C.Talk to other people who are being negative. |
D.You may get worried about examinations for different reasons. |
E.Keep testing yourself with past papers to track how your work helps. |
F.Try to take the negative energy away from your thoughts. |
G.The good news is that these emotions are entirely normal. |
6 . More than 500 of the world's smallest penguins have mysteriously washed up dead on beaches across New Zealand over the past couple of months. Experts aren't exactly sure what has been killing off such a large number of the cute seabirds, but they suspect that climate change may have played a role.
It was not immediately clear what killed the penguins, but experts have noted that most of the dead seabirds were significantly underweight. Little penguins should weigh between 1.8 and 2.2 pounds, but some of the bodies weighed less than half that much.
“There was just no body fat on them; there was hardly any muscle to show,” Graeme Taylor, a seabird scientist, told The Guardian. “When they get to that stage of emaciation (消瘦), they can’t dive, which eventually causes them to starve or die of hypothermia (体温过低) because they lack a protective layer of blubber (鲸脂).” he added.
The malnourishment of the dead penguins shows that they have not been eating enough fish, their favorite food, which could be a sign of overfishing by humans. But Taylor suspects that rising ocean surface temperatures caused by global warming have forced the fish into deeper and cooler waters, where the birds can no longer reach them. "These little penguins can dive down to 20 or 30 meters, but they are not good at diving a lot deeper than that.” Taylor said.
This idea could explain why little penguins from New Zealand's South Island haven't been affected, because the waters there have remained much cooler near the surface than waters farther north.
“This is not the first time little penguins have died in large numbers in New Zealand. Die-offs of hundreds of little penguins have occurred about once every decade. However, this is the third time that a die-off has happened in the past 10 years, which is not a good sign.” Taylor said. “As you start seeing it happen regularly like this, then there's really not much chance for the birds to recover between the events and rebuild the numbers again.” Taylor added.

7 . Feeling young may be more important than being young, according to researchers from University of College London.
The findings were published by JAMA Internal Medicine. A total of 6, 489 people who were at least 52 years old joined in 2010 or 2011 and were then tracked for an average of 99 months. When they entered the study, they were asked this simple question, “How old do you feel you are?”
Although the average true age of the volunteers was 65. 8 years old, their average self-recognized age was only 56. 8 years old. The feeling that one’s age is lower than one’s chronological age was very common in the study. Fully 69. 6 percent of the volunteers felt at least three years younger while only 4. 8 percent felt more than one year older. The remaining 25. 6 percent felt “about their actual age”.
A total of 1, 266 of the volunteers died during the course of the study, but those deaths weren’t equally spread among all three groups. The mortality rate (死亡率) among those who felt older than their true age was 24. 6 percent, compared with 18. 5 percent for those who felt their age and only 14.3 percent for those who felt much younger.
The researchers also took into consideration various factors that might explain the connection between feeling older and the increased risk of near-term death. With all of these things taken into consideration, they still found that the risk of death during the course of the study was 41 percent higher for the people who felt older than for the people who felt younger.
“People who feel older than their actual age could be targeted with health messages encouraging positive feelings,” the study authors wrote.

9 . Choosing a musical instrument
Many people would like to learn how to play a musical instrument, but they are put off by one big problem: what to play?
What kind of music do you like?
Many instruments are multi-purpose, but some are more suited to certain types of music. Although there is some classical performance for the saxophone, for example, people associate it more with jazz, and it is not a permanent feature of many orchestras.
Do you want to play with other people?
Think about your long-term future as a musician. If you want to play with other people, what sort of instrument would be most practical? If you want to play rock music, there will always be a demand for bass players or drummers, and if you fancy being part of an orchestra, the bassoon is a great bet to make sure you are always needed.
Where are you going to practise?
Many people live in flats and practising the drums, for example, will drive your neighbors crazy. Electric versions of instruments like the piano, drums, guitar and even violin give you the option of playing into the night using headphones, while your housemates sleep in peace.
How much money can you spend?
If you’re small and don’t like lifting heavy objects, you won’t want to carry around a double bass. Apart from that, use your common sense, and don’t let your physical shortcomings put you off. Who says small skinny people can’t play the tuba? It’s true that some wind instruments require a lot of lung power but with the right coaching, everyone can develop the right technique.
If you are still not sure, find an experienced music teacher, who can give you some advice and push you in the right direction. If you find an instrument you love and that suits your needs, you’ll find the time spent choosing was well worth it. Good luck with making your choice!
A.This is quite a big factor |
B.Are there any physical limitations |
C.Here are some tips for you to follow |
D.Does it matter if you are not strong enough |
E.Here are a few questions to help you decide |
F.Some instruments may lend themselves better than others to the music you like |
G.Alternatively, you may need to consider going to a school or a community centre to practise |
10 . Celebrities (famous people) are everywhere nowadays: on TV, in magazines, online. Is this concern with famous people harmless fun or is it bad for us? How many people are truly crazy about modern media idols? And on the other side of the coin, can fame be harmful to the celebrities?
Studies suggest that the vast majority of teenagers do not really worship celebrities. Researchers have identified three kinds of fans. About 15% of young people have an ‘entertainment-social’ interest. They love chatting about their favourite celebrities with friends and this does not appear to do any harm.
Another 5% feel that they have an ‘intense-personal’ relationship with a celebrity. Sometimes they see them as their soulmate. These people are more at risk from depression and anxiety. If girls in this group idolise a female star with a body they consider to be perfect, they are more likely to be unhappy with their own bodies.
That leaves 2% of young people with a ‘borderline-pathological’ interest. They might say, for example, they would spend several thousand pounds on a paper plate the celebrity had used, or that they would do something illegal if the celebrity asked them to.
What about the celebrities themselves? A study in the USA tried to measure narcissism or extreme self-centeredness, among the celebrities and other groups of adults. As was expected, the celebrities were significantly more narcissistic than the general population.
Four kinds of celebrity were included in the sample. The most narcissistic were the ones who had become famous through reality TV shows — they scored highest on vanity (自负) and willingness to exploit other people. Next came comedians, who scored highest on exhibitionism (表现狂) and feelings of superiority. Then came actors, and the least narcissistic were musicians. One interesting result was that there was no connection between narcissism and the length of time the celebrity had been famous.
So, what can we learn from this? People who are very successful or famous tend to be narcissists and are likely to be unsympathetic, self-seeking workaholics. As we can see from celebrity magazines, they are also often desperate and lonely. They make disastrous role models.
