文章大意:本文是应用文。文章介绍了四个著名的观赏洞穴。

1 . Blue Grotto, Italy

Despite its name, it is actually not a grotto(洞穴)but a sea cave, about 60m long. What makes it one of the most beautiful caves in the world is the blue color, as its name suggests. When you enter inside, you can see it is filled with weird blue light. This color is formed by the unique combination of the rocks, the entrance, the clear water and the whole shape. In fact, you can’t identify where the source of the blue light is.

Son Doong Cave, Vietnam

This is known as the largest cave in the world, not because of its length—in fact, it is just about 5km long. But its size comes from its enormous passages and caves, reaching 200m in height. In addition, there is an underground river, making the cave even more impressive.

Marble Caves, Chile

Located far from any road, the caves are accessible only by boat. This is the most beautiful cave structure in the world, in which crystal clear water is literally lightened by dazzling(使目眩)blue ice walls. A magical, fabulous, unreal and almost unearthly sight! The caves are best seen from September to February and earlier in the morning when the sunlight streams inside.

Reed Flute Cave, China

Its name comes from the reeds beside its entrance that have been used for making flutes(长笛). It is not too long and not too deep-only about 500m in length. What makes this cave more special is the history. It has been known since ancient times. And when you enter inside, you can see a lot of inscriptions(碑文)dating back to medieval times, starting from the times of the Tang Dynasty (around 792 AD).

1. What is Blue Grotto most famous for?
A.Its long history.B.Its strange shape.C.Its clear water.D.Its amazing color.
2. When are the visitors advised to visit Marble Caves?
A.At noon in March.B.At night in October.
C.At sunrise in December.D.In the morning in August.
3. Which is the largest cave of the four?
A.The Blue Grotto.B.Son Doong Cave.
C.Marble Caves.D.Reed Flute Cave.

The clock read 11 p.m. and I was still in the lab but I couldn’t focus. But going home wasn’t an option. My adviser had required me and the rest of my lab mates to stay in the lab until she had time to read all of our reports. She had decided she wanted to meet early with each of us to discuss the single-paragraph descriptions of our work. We waited dutifully as each lab member took their turn. None of us dared to leave or to challenge our boss. I didn’t get home until 1:30 a.m.

It was one more reminder that I should have been more careful when selecting a graduate adviser. Unfortunately, I was foolish enough not to give the directing style a second thought. I was simply happy to have received an offer.

Part of the problem was that I had limited options. I moved to the United States with my husband, who had a good job in a particular city. It had only one university, with only one department that really interested me. So I started to volunteer in a research lab there.

I was a regular attendee at departmental discussion groups, and that was where I met my future adviser. After she presented a meeting, I approached her and we set up a time to chat. We had a productive discussion about her research. Later, I went to dinner with her lab group.

I didn’t pick up any signs of trouble, although one person who worked in a lab that shared space with hers did tell me about coming across one of her lab members crying in the break room. I ignored that warning sign. Within a few weeks, the staff member offered me a position in her lab as a master’s student. The opportunity seemed too good to pass up. I hoped it would work out.

It wasn’t long before reality set in. Group meetings were terrible. Our adviser was often angry.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了普林斯顿大学的科学家们发现,虽然音乐绝对可以刺激类似的心理体验,但研究结果也强烈表明,文化是一个主要因素。

4 . People often call music a universal language, but do certain songs really cause the same mental images in our minds? Scientists at Princeton find that while music absolutely can stimulate(激发)similar mental experiences, the results also strongly suggest culture is a major factor.

A total of 622 people took part in the study. All of the volunteers came from one of three locations: two suburban college towns in the US (one in Arkansas and the other in Michigan), or the rural Chinese village of Dimen. It’s worth noting that the main language in Dimen is Dong, a tonal language unrelated to the official language of China. Locals there have little contact with Western media or culture at all. All participants listened to the exact same 32 “musical stimuli”— which were 60-second cuts of instrumental music. Half of these pieces came from Western music while the rest came from Chinese music.

After hearing, researchers asked the groups about the images they saw in their heads while listening. Incredibly, people from Arkansas and Michigan often described very similar stories, even using the exact same words frequently. Dimen listeners, on the other hand, envisioned stories that were similar to each other but quite different from the American listeners. More specifically, one track led t o Americans seeing a cowboy in the hot desert surveying an empty town. Meanwhile, Chinese participants imagined a man in ancient times reflecting on the loss of a loved one.

“There’s something about the results that’s really surprising, especially because people encounter music in 2022 often in a solitary way, over headphones. But it turns out, it’s still a shared experience, almost like a shred dream, although not universally shared, ”says Elizabeth Margulis, the study author.

The results paint a more complex picture of music’s power. Music can generate remarkably similar stories in listeners’ minds, but it depends on a common set of cultural experiences. So while we imagine music can bring people together, the opposite can also be true-it can distinguish between sets of people with a different background or culture.

1. What is the probable reason for Dimen being selected for the study?
A.Its unique cultural background.B.Its close contact with US.
C.Its complex language system.D.Its long tradition of music.
2. What were the participants required to do after listening to music?
A.Exchange their comments on the scene.
B.Imagine musicians’ original inspiration.
C.Describe the picture forming in mind.
D.Recall personal music-related stories.
3. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “solitary” in paragraph 4?
A.Strange.B.Individual.C.Outdated.D.Polite.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Unbelievable? Music’s Effects Go beyond Cultures
B.Problem Solved! How Music Brings Us All Together
C.Amazing! Cultures Determine Our Preference for Music
D.Universal Language? Culture Matters When We Hear Music

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要介绍了Daniel Brush是一位创造奇迹的人,使用古老的工艺来制作物品,他终生研究黄金,一生追求艺术理想。

5 . Daniel Brush, an astonishing worker in gold, jewels and steel died on November 2022, aged 75. Students from a jewellery school once came to Brush’s studio, a loft in mid-Manhattan, awed to be meeting a figure who, to them, was a worker of miracles.

For 45 years in that loft, he had pursued his calling. His wife Olivia was the only company. He produced hundreds of objects of all sorts, most of them exquisite and many astonishingly small. Rather than use electricity, he laboured alone in a forest of antique machines and when tools frustrated him he made his own, displaying them in cupboards as art in themselves.

Above all else, he worked in gold. His obsession took fire when at 13 he saw an Etruscan gold bowl in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The ancient technique of applying gold beads as fine as sand-grains to a curved gold surface without solder (焊接), was stunning, but so was the lightness of spirit.

He resolved then that he would make such a bowl, and gold became the study of his life. Simply to watch it melt, turn to red-hot and white-hot, then glow purple, was magical. To hold pure gold grain and let it move slowly through his fingers restored his calm of spirit. His chief motivation, he said, was to understand the material and, through that, himself. He wondered why his heart had beaten so fast in the museum that day. Gold in particular had a message for him. His contact with this glorious metal might focus all his attention and help him to hear it.

He developed delicate craftsmanship, with each object virtually a museum piece. For Daniel Brush, he loved the idea that one might take a piece made by Brush out of a pocket, let its beauty pass from mind to mind, and smile. That too was what its maker was after.

1. What can we learn about Daniel Brush?
A.Students visited him regularly.
B.He began to live in his loft in 1975.
C.He tended to use ancient crafts to produce objects.
D.Most objects he produced were of a surprisingly small size.
2. What is the main reason for his lifelong study of gold?
A.He wanted to learn more about both gold and himself.
B.He wondered why his heart had beat fast in the museum.
C.His calm was restored when gold grain moved through fingers.

3. Which of the following can best describe Daniel Brush?
A.Stubborn.B.Wealthy.C.Dedicated.D.Lonely.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day, Dad took Tim and Lily to the supermarket. “Now where has Tim gone? ” asked Dad. Lily shrugged. Keeping track of Tim was not on her agenda today. She’d been trying to decide on the perfect gift for Dad’s upcoming birthday. This year, she was determined to prepare a present that couldn’t be bought at a store or ordered online.

“Daddy!” Tim appeared out of nowhere, disturbing Lily’s thoughts. He yelled, holding a cereal (麦片) box in the air, “Let’s get it! It’s nutritious and delicious! And it has a dragon inside! ” Tim remembered Dad saying that when he was a kid, almost every box of cereal came with a toy. Ever since, Tim was certain that he, too, would find a toy in the next box.

When they got home, Dad and Lily began putting away the groceries. Tim couldn’t wait to take the box of cereal upstairs to his room. By the time they finished, Lily could hear Tim shouting. “No! No!” Tim’s voice kept getting louder and louder. Lily imagined each word as the sound of a hammer striking metal. Then she raced towards her brother’s room. The moment she stepped inside, she felt a crunch (嘎吱声) beneath her feet. It was obvious that Tim dumped all that cereal looking for a toy dragon. “They lied! No dragon. Just a picture on the box.” Tim sounded close to tears. Annoyed as Lily was, she said quietly, “Let’s see what the box says.” “I don’t know how to read.” her brother said in a low voice.

It reminded Lily that last school year, Tim’s teacher who sent home easy-to-read books and worksheets insisted that he was ready to learn to read and just needed some extra help, but Tim complained about books “for babies” and “boring” homework assignments. It was really a headache for Dad to teach Tim to read! At the thought of these, it seemed that Tim’s dragon issue had swept away her concern for a present for Dad.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了法国一家公司研制出的一款可以缓解晕车的眼镜。

10 . People who suffer from motion sickness have a long list of activities they are afraid of, and often avoid altogether. This includes long-distance airplane travel, road-trips, and even certain movies and video games. However, if the French company Boarding Ring has its way, motion sickness sufferers will soon have nothing to worry about, provided they are willing to wear the strange-looking Boarding Glasses!

Also called seasickness or carsickness, motion sickness is believed to be the result of the brain receiving mixed signals from the sensory systems, which include the eyes, inner ear, muscles, and joints. For example, when you are looking at your phone on a moving bus, your inner ear notices the motion but your eyes, focused on the screen, thinks you are not moving.

Boarding Glasses try to reduce motion sickness symptoms by “recreating the horizon” so that all the user’s senses send the same message. Though that sounds complex, the science behind the eyewear is surprisingly simple. The frames, made of two round lenses on the front and two on the side, are hollow and partially filled with a blue liquid. Any movement in the vehicle causes the liquid to run around the eyes. This allows the eyes to sense the motion and send the correct signal to the brain. Antoine Jeannin, CEO of Boarding Ring, says, “Your eyes always get the reality of the movement and get a signal that is consistent with the balance system perception.”

According to the company, Boarding Glasses, invented by Jeannin’s father, have been tested by French Navy personnel. The CEO says that over 95 percent of the users reported feeling better after wearing them. People who don’t like the glasses’ appearance will be excited to know that they are only required to be worn for a short period of time. According to Jeannin, “You put the glasses on at the first sign of sickness, leave them on for 10 or 12 minutes, and then take them off. Usually, this cures you of the sickness for the rest of the journey.” The best part is that since Boarding Glasses have no lenses, a single pair can be shared among a group of friends, or even an entire family!

1. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Motion sickness causes much inconvenience to its sufferers.
B.Motion sickness sufferers should avoid working out together.
C.Certain movies and video games provide the feeling of flying.
D.The French company Boarding Ring can cure motion sickness.
2. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The theory behind motion sickness.B.The mixed signals the brain receives.
C.Organs belonging to the sensory systems.D.The result of screen watching on a moving bus.
3. Why are the lenses filled with a blue liquid?
A.To make the Boarding Glasses a little attractive.
B.To ensure the brain receives the correct signal.
C.To strengthen the function of the balance system.
D.To make the movement in the vehicle less boring.
4. What is good news for those who care much for the glasses’ appearance?
A.The price is very low.B.The glasses are widely effective.
C.The lenses are suitable for all people.D.The necessary time for use is not long.
