2 . Many people are eager to see things in the dark. Now their thought comes true. According to a press release from The Australian National University, by wearing a pair of glasses, you can walk home in the dark, drive safely at night, or explore dark forests and caves without holding a flashlight!
The technology is made up of a thin film that will be placed on the lenses (镜片) of regular glasses. Compared to traditional night vision devices, it is cheap to make, easy to mass-produce, and lightweight. The thin film is made of nanometer-level materials that are hundreds of times thinner than human hair. Yet, despite its tiny size, its performance is impressive.
“Our technology is able to transform infrared light (红外光) into images,” lead researcher Dr. Rocio Camacho Morales said in the press release.
Over the years scientists have studied animals active at night by using infrared cameras, and infrared imaging has been used for body scans in the medical world and for food quality control in the industrial world. Conventional infrared imaging devices work by detecting the heat of an object. The infrared detectors use a cooler and are also sensitive to thermal noise (热噪声).Such disadvantages led the team into exploring an improved device.
Their new device is able to function at room temperature. The new technology is not large or heavy like previous technologies. Once this new night vision device is available to all, it could save lives. Drivers will be able to find their way better at night, especially when driving on rough roads. Police can use it when searching at night, and hikers who lose their way can feel more confident walking in the dark.

4 . With coffee beans in short supply worldwide and Chinese consumers expanding their coffee habit, Yunnan province beans have increasingly appeared in major coffee chains in China.
Yunnan, the largest coffee planting area in China, is blessed with high altitudes and suitable climate for planting high-quality coffee beans. The province is the source of more than 99% of domestically (国内地) produced coffee.
Last year, Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producing country, experienced extreme weather, including drought and frost, which caused a decrease in output of nearly 20%. The epidemic (疫情) is another reason for the price increase. The COVID-19 pandemic has hampered the timely transportation of coffee beans to overseas markets.
With coffee from international markets in short supply, Yunnan has drawn attention of coffee chains in China.
Ye Peng, a coffee farmer in Pu’er, Yunnan, for more than a decade, said she has seen the prices of orders double from last year. With advanced planting technologies and higher quality local coffee beans, her company ships its product to famous coffee chains such as Starbucks and Manner Coffee.
Baoshan Chunzheng Coffee Company is a major coffee provider in Yunnan. It provides coffee beans to Yum China, which operates fast food chains KFC and Pizza Hut (必胜客) in the country.
With promising markets at home and abroad, there are more and more coffee farmers and coffee factories in Yunnan.

6 . I thought it was a cold — then I entered history. For me, it all began with a sore throat followed by a stuffy (堵塞的) nose. I didn’t think too much about it. But I thought it was responsible for me to have a COVID-19 test. Shortly afterwards, the bombshell landed — my test result came back as positive, meaning I had contracted COVID-19.
I began to regret my own previous thinking that “I am young, sportive, and a regular marathon nnner, so even if I am infected with the virus, I should be fine.”
Undoubtedly, it was necessary to tell people I have been in contact with while being potentially infectious, and I did so. But I cannot deny, there was a moment of unwillingness when I felt a bit ashamed and anxious to make such a move. Knowing that it is COVID-19, I felt more of a psychological stress than a physical one.
But I was confident that I would be back at work soon. Sadly, that did not happen as the illness turned out to be more complicated than I had imagined. I felt extremely painful in my head. A few days later, I lost my sense of taste. Thankfully, it was temporary and all the major discomfort started to disappear after two weeks, and now I am recovered.
On reflection, the main lesson for me is to be patient and let the virus run its own course. And I realized that youth and fitness do not necessarily mean a quick recovery. The virus interacts with everybody differently.
