Jianbing has a     1     (long) history than almost any other Chinese street food. It is thought to have originated in Shandong Province during the Three Kingdoms Period (220–280 AD).

Jianbing is one of China’s most popular street breakfasts. The recipe     2     a modern-day jianbing holds fairly closely to this principle. A thick, sticky wad of dough (面团) is quickly spread into a giant pancake, using a thick wooden paddle. While the jianbing cooks, an egg or two are cracked onto its uncooked surface and spread evenly. Then topped with     3     (fine) chopped (剁碎) vegetables, the jianbing     4     (fold) in half like a fan,     5     sweet and spicy layer of sauces spread on the back to taste. And each one is cooked fresh to order on a circular cast-iron grill, just the way that you want it.

The batter (面糊) and fillings     6     (use) in jianbing differ by region. In southern China, the batter might be made from green beans,     7     in Tianjin, they use you tiao (fried dough sticks) rather than fried wontons (馄饨) as filling, calling them jianbing guozi. Other fillings vary too, ranging from Chinese sausage to chopped carrot, chicken, or even—in Shanghai—slices of bacon.

Jianbing     8     (stand) are the simple breakfast architecture of every Chinese city. Every city has its own jianbing vendor serving breakfast     9     dawn through mid-morning,     10     (satisfy) hungry locals on their way to work.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章阐述了朱云霞教授提出克服文化障碍的正确方式。

4 . Professor Zhu Yunxia, an award-winning researcher and educator at the University of Queensland and has an international reputation in cross-cultural management and strategy, believes that anyone can learn to overcome cultural barriers with the right approach. She offers the following suggestions.

Be prepared for surprises.

One country might contain different cultures—China, for example, is composed of 56 ethnic groups—and within these, people may act in different ways in different contexts and with different groups of people.     1

    2

While speaking the language is not necessary to understand the culture, it is important to know basic greetings and courtesies (客气话) for social interaction such as “hello” and “thank you”. These everyday phrases and rituals (礼节) are entry points which allow you to access the culture. People will also appreciate that you have made the effort.

Learn to “make strange”.

In day-to-day life, we tend to take many of our own customs and behaviors for granted without recognizing that these might appear odd from others’ point of view.     3

Use a “cultural bridge”.

The customs of another culture can be too strange or too foreign to understand.     4     “Cultural bridges” are people whose knowledge enriches our own and who can help us understand what’s going on. Having arrived as a Chinese student, Dr. Zhu has spent over 20 years in Australia but still sometimes seeks a second opinion from her daughter who was brought up here and occasionally calls up old friends for advice in China.

Don’t focus on yourself.

5     Instead of giving in to thoughts such as “I’m a stranger in a foreign land” or “Nobody talks to me”, try to forget yourself and focus on others. By taking a more positive approach, you can even find ways to use cultural differences to your advantage.

A.Learn the“cultural grammar”.
B.Consequently, wait for the unexpected.
C.Develop and expand cooperative awareness.
D.Sometimes an “insider” can help us to bridge the gap.
E.Be open-minded and always try to aim for a win-win situation.
F.Being too self-conscious can harm your ability to interact and learn.
G.Learn to look at situations with fresh eyes, starting with our own culture.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章讲述了华为研发的智能手机Mate 60 Pro取得的重大突破。

5 . While Huawei’s official website does not call Mate 60 Pro a 5G smartphone, the phone’s wideband capabilities are on par with other 5G smartphones, raising a related question: As a leader in 5G technology, has Huawei managed to develop a 5G smartphone on its own?

The answer is not simple. Huawei, as a pioneer in global 5G communication equipment, has played a leading role in the commercialization of 5G technology, with its strong system design and fields such as baseband chips (基带芯片), baseband processors and 5G modems.

However, basebands and modems are not the only aspects that define 5G wireless communication. The stability and high-quality signals of a 5G smartphone also depend on other critical components such as RF transceivers (射频收发器) and RF front ends and antennas (天线) . These components are largely dominated by four US high-tech giants—Qualcomm, Avago Technologies, Ansem and Qorvo—which account for a surprising global market share.

Huawei has faced significant challenges in getting critical components because of the sanctions imposed by the United States which are primarily responsible for the inability of the Chinese company to launch 5G smartphones in the past three years. However, Mate 60 Pro, despite not being labeled a 5G device, exhibits mobile network speeds comparable to Apple’s latest 5G-enabled devices, offering a stable communication experience. This suggests Huawei has, over the past three years, overcome the 5G development and production limits due to the US sanctions by cooperating with domestic partners, and establishing an independent and controllable stable supply chain.

Considering that Huawei has not explicitly marketed this device as a 5G smartphone, it is possible that it is yet to fully overcome some key core technological and componential shortcomings. For the time being, we can consider Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro as 4.99G. But when combined with the satellite communication capabilities of Mate 60 Pro, it is clear Huawei has been trying to find more advanced wireless communication solutions for smartphones and making significant progress in this attempt. This should be recognized as a remarkable endeavor, even a breakthrough.

1. What do the underlined words “on par with” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.as poor as.B.as good as.C.worse than.D.better than.
2. Why was it tough for Huawei to develop a 5G smartphone three years ago?
A.Its system design and fields needed to be updated.
B.It only focused on the commercialization of 5G technology.
C.It was unwilling to cooperate with high-tech giants in America.
D.It lacked critical components mainly controlled by US high-tech giants.
3. What does Paragraph 4 centre on?
A.The US sanctions.B.Critical components.
C.Apple’s latest 5G-enabled devices.D.Progress in Mate 60 Pro.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Huawei faced with significant challenges
B.Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro—a 5G smartphone
C.Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro—a remarkable breakthrough
D.Huawei leading in global 5G communication equipment

Hello, everyone! As we know, the film is one of the greatest     1    (invent) of the 19th century.     2    you are enjoying a good film in the cinema, are you wondering how the film was made? In fact, the process of     3    (produce) a film is not easy. Many people have done a lot of work before a film comes to you.

First, I’d like to tell you that a film’s sound effects     4    (be) not recorded on the scene but often added after a scene has been shot. Second, CGI has been frequently used in film-making to make visual special effects.     5    , the aid of computers isn’t always preferred. For example, Peter Jackson took a creative approach—clever camera angles, to make characters seem bigger or     6    (small) than they really were when making The Lord of the Rings.    7    (three), to make a film look real, directors and his fellows will make great efforts to research, find and build objects. For example, James Cameron had 500 workers    8    (work) 100 days to build a full-sized model for his 1997 film—Titanic.

Hopefully, next time you go to the cinema, you may as well spare    9    thought for all those talented people behind the     10    (scene).

Finding the Real Me

I had thought losing my job was the worst thing that had ever happened to me. But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Losing my job was not the end of who I was but literally the beginning of discovering the real me.

It started out as one of the best days of my life, and certainly, of my career. My staff and I had been named the number one unit in our company, and I was taking them out for a celebratory lunch. Lunch was fun, the food was excellent, and the friendly atmosphere at the table made me smile. The weather was crisp, cool and sunny. I thought to myself “It just doesn’t get any better than this.” It was a perfect day!

Then came the teleconference at two o’clock as usual.

“Er, if you... if you are willing to move?” stuttered our associate director, voice trembling, “and if you cannot move, you will be given a severance package (遣散费), and ...”

How could this be happening? I felt numb, my world slowly coming to an end. My husband and family comforted me, but I was scared. Financially, I knew we would be okay. But I had worked full-time my whole life and it had become my identity — who I was and how I defined myself. I was a leader, and I felt, a good one. What would I be with that taken from me?

After sitting around feeling sorry for myself, I just casually turned on the television. A program caught my attention — a group of volunteers were helping children and hungry people all over the world. It struck me! I felt guilty knowing that even though I had lost my job, we had plenty of good, healthy food on the table every night. The words spoken by a volunteer seemed directed specifically at me — The best way to be blessed and to forget about your own problem is to help someone else. Ashamed, I realized that I had been abandoned to self-pity when I had so much to be thankful for and to do — a loving husband, beautiful children, and family and friends who needed me.

8 . Have you wondered how your body knows when to wake up or why you need to sleep at night? Day-night rhythms use the Sun to help your body to run on time.

What are Day-night rhythms?

“Day-night rhythms” is another name for body clocks.     1    . Day-night rhythms repeat every 24 hours and almost every living thing has them. They tell animals the best time to hunt, and plants when to flower. Day-night rhythms are influenced by light. When the Sun shines through the window in the morning your body clock tells you it’s time to wake up.     2    .

    3    .

Good-quality sleep lets your brain recharge to keep you healthy. Not listening to your body clock, such as by going to bed late, can mess with your sleep cycle and make you feel tired and irritable the next day. Day-night rhythms also affect energy and body temperature.     4    . Swathi Yadlapalli is a scientist who studies how people grow and develop. She says, “Almost every cell in the human body has a body clock, so there are clocks in most of our organs.”

What do your body clock say?

Day-night rhythms are written into people’s genes. We can’t change them but we can listen to what they’re telling us. The Sleep Charity, which helps people to sleep better, recommends sticking to regular sleep patterns. So, whether you like to stay up late or get up early, try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day.     5    . Even if the sky is cloudy and grey, this can reset your body clock and make you feel more awake.

A.How do they keep you healthy?
B.How do people grow and develop?
C.When it’s dark, your body feels sleepy.
D.You should also take a breath of fresh air in the morning.
E.It also suggests getting lots of natural light in the morning.

9 . Kweichow Moutai, a homegrown luxury liquor brand, has partnered with Mars Inc-owned Dove to make liquor-filled chocolate to make its products more appealing to the younger generation.

The product is priced at 35 yuan ($4.81) for a gift box of two pieces and 99 yuan for a box of six. Products with less sugar are priced at 39 yuan for a box of two, 109 yuan for a box of six and 179 yuan for a box with a dozen pieces.

Moutai announced the partnership with Dove on Thursday, just 12 days after it teamed up with China’s largest coffee chain Luckin Coffee on a liquor-coffee drink which sold 5.42 million cups and reached sales of 100 million yuan on launch day.

The Moutai-Dove cooperation has boosted its chocolate market, which experienced growth challenges during the past three years and is set to make the Moutai brand more accessible to young consumers, said Jason Yu, general manager of Kantar Worldpanel China. Since young consumers often pursue healthy lifestyles, the consumption of chocolate has grown slowly in China, thereby requiring greater innovation in taste and packaging.

The partnership means more in terms of branding than sales volume. “Behind every collaboration, the corporate value and persistence in long-term development make the longevity of a brand, not a one-time deal,” said Zhu Danpeng, an analyst. In recent years, “liquor plus” has become a driving force for Moutai to grow revenue and to get closer to consumers, he added.

Moutai has paid more attention to diversification and internationalization. In May, it launched six types of ice cream products and began to develop liquor-filled chocolate. It now has 11 types of ice cream with the Moutai flavor, selling nearly 10 million cups this year. In 2022, sales of Moutai-flavored ice cream hit 262 million yuan, according to the company. Moreover, culturally innovative products, such as Moutai-themed blind-box gift sets, have been developed since 2022, contributing to nearly 600 million yuan in revenue last year.

“Dove’s global branding and reputation offer Moutai an opportunity to double down on its expansion in the home and overseas markets,” said Zhu.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了科学家通过育种来让孢子甘蓝变得没那么苦,这一成功主要是因为基因技术的发达,一些公司开始使用这些工具来应对开发更美味蔬菜的挑战。

10 . Today’s Brussels sprouts (孢子甘蓝) taste better than you might remember from childhood, and that is because a new variety has replaced the original vegetable. You can thank plant breeders (植物育种家) for the change. Modern breeders, armed with new gene-editing technology, are looking to reproduce Brussels sprouts’ reinvention.

In the late 1990s, scientists discovered specific chemicals which made Brussels sprouts taste bitter. Plant breeders started growing old seeds, previously abandoned due to poor yields (产量), to look for tastier versions with lower levels of these specific chemicals. Then they crossed these delicious but low-yield plants with high-yield individuals until they found a version that made plenty of tasty sprouts, transforming the vegetable from a bitter pill into a popular dish.

But other vegetables haven’t fared as well. That’s because most breeding decisions favor plant traits that matter to vegetable growers, not vegetable eaters. For instance, disease resistance is probably the major focus these days of most breeding programs because that prevents the farmer from growing the crop. The taste of vegetables is ignored.

People, however, are now becoming interested in prioritizing the taste of vegetables thanks in part to new genetic technology such as the gene-snipping technique CRISPR and DNA sequencing which is cheap enough to use widely. “There’s never been a better time to be a fruit breeder or a vegetable breeder because we have more tools and techniques,” says Susan Brown, an apple breeder at Cornell University.

Some companies are beginning to use those tools to deal with the challenge of developing tastier vegetables. One company, Pairwise, is fighting the same compounds that troubled Brussels sprouts: glucosinolates. But this time researchers are improving the flavor of salad greens.

All vegetable growers hope that more flavorful products on store shelves will convince people to consume the recommended allowances (推荐量) of fruits and vegetables — and do so better than decades of nutritional guidance have. “Don’t waste your time talking about trying to educate people to eat better,” said Harry Klee, a professor who specializes in tomato breeding. “Just give them products that taste better and that they want to eat.”

1. Why did plant breeders grow old Brussels sprout seeds?
A.To find out why Brussels sprouts are bitter.
B.To find the less bitter versions of Brussels sprouts.
C.To study the specific chemicals of Brussels sprouts.
D.To select high-yielding versions of Brussels sprouts.
2. What does the underlined word “fared” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.ProfitedB.Emerged.C.Survived.D.Succeeded.
3. What can we learn from Susan Brown’s words in paragraph 4?
A.Fruit and vegetable breeding techniques are booming.
B.Fruit and vegetable breeding techniques need no further improvement.
C.Fruit and vegetable breeders are struggling to develop new species.
D.Fruit and vegetable breeders should develop new genetic technology.
4. Which is the best way to get people to eat more fruits and vegetables according to Harry Klee?
A.Enhancing the taste of vegetables and fruits.
B.Making vegetables and fruits more affordable for people.
C.Improving the nutritional content of vegetables and fruits.
D.Educating people about the benefits of vegetables and fruits.
