2 . 阅读下面材料,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Technology is changing the face of the world, and now faces are changing technology too. Facial recognition technology,     1     its capacity to analyse a huge amount of data, has come into widespread use. It works by comparing the facial features of     2     (give) images with what are in a database. It offers a quick and cool alternative to traditional passwords, and you cannot forget your own face! In theory, networks which use our own body as passwords should also be     3     (safe) from hackers and better protect us from identity theft than those who use traditional passwords, mainly because every individual is unique. This technology is     4     (especial) useful in public places: banks, airports and railway stations, to name but a few.

However, facial recognition technology has also started to pose some difficult questions. Experts have been giving     5     (warn) about this technology, saying it may not be as good as we think. Facial expressions often vary,     6     (make) facial recognition less effective. Moreover, there is growing concern     7     we might fall victim to this technology, as there are cases in which hackers have broken into facial recognition systems by using people’s social media photos     8     (build) models of their faces.

Scientists and engineers     9     (urge) to improve existing technology and make it fail-safe in recent years. Apparently, this will be     10     tough task. Whatever happens, we need to make sure that facial recognition technology can be trusted—or we will have to face the consequences.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了对科里海鸥迁徙的模式的研究。

3 . In habitats across the planet, animals periodically drop everything to walk, fly or swim to a new place. Wildlife such as whales and geese learn migration paths by following their parents. Others, including small songbirds, gain the distance and direction of their migration within their genetic code. And some animals use a combination of genetics and culture to guide their migration.

Another group of migrators does not quite fit either model, and researchers have only recently started to figure out how they find their way. Take the Cory’s shearwater, an oceangoing sea bird that migrates over the Atlantic every year. The young do not migrate with their parents, so culture cannot explain their journeys. And the exact paths vary wildly from individual to individual, making genetics equally unlikely.

Cory’s shearwaters are long-lived, rarely producing young successfully before age nine. This leaves an opening for learning and practice to develop their migration patterns. Researchers call this the “exploration-refinement”, and until now it has been hypothetical (假设的) because of difficulties in tracking migratory animals’ movements.

But a team of researchers has done that by attaching small geolocators to more than 150 of the birds aged four to nine. They found that younger birds traveled longer distances, for longer periods, and had more diverse paths than older birds. “We finally have evidence of the ‘exploration-refinement’ for migratory birds,” says Letizia Campioni, who led the study. Younger Cory’s shearwaters are able to fly just as fast as the adults—but they do not, suggesting that the young do more exploring, which gradually fades as they mature and settle into a preferred course.

Although it may seem less efficient than other strategies, “exploration refinement could be beneficial to birds and other organisms in a rapidly changing world due to unpredictable man-made changes,” says Barbara Frei. “It might be safer to repeat a behavior that was recently successful than to rely on patterns that were perfected long ago but might no longer be safe.”

1. Why does the author mention different migration models in Paragraph 1?
A.To give an example.B.To lead in the topic.
C.To make a comparison.D.To support an idea.
2. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The opening for learning and practice.
B.The unique living habit of Cory’s shearwaters.
C.The way Cory’s shearwaters form their migration patterns.
D.The process scientists track Cory’s shearwaters’ movements.
3. What does Letizia’s study find about the younger Cory’s shearwaters?
A.They lower the speed for exploration.B.They move in a predictable manner.
C.They travel as much as adult birds.D.They look for a course with their parents.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Fixed Tracks: Safer Migration Model
B.Migration Models: Important Ways to Deal With Changes
C.A Combination of Strategies: A Wise Choice for Migration
D.Exploration Refinement: Migration Model With Better Adaptability

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。研究发现——熊有高智商。研究表明,熊不仅会使用梳子,有些熊还会数数。熊总是独自应对生活中的很多挑战,这可能解释了它们为什么有高智商。

8 . The average bear, it seems, is getting over smarter. First, it turned out that at least one can use a comb. Now it appears that some can count too.

Jennifer Vonk, of Oakland University, in Michigan, and Michael Beran, from Georgia State University, set three American black bears the task of distinguishing between numerically larger and smaller groups of dots (点) on a computer screen. In return for a food reward one bear, Brutus, would touch the more heavily dotted pattern with his nose. The others, Bella and Dusty, would touch the screen with their claws (爪子).

As the researchers report in Animal Behavior, the bears did best with patterns where the coloured dots did not move and where more of them also took up a larger coloured area. This could be explained by the bears’ distinguishing the different areas of colour rather than truly counting the dots. However, the three bears managed to pick out the bigger number of dots even in pairs of patterns where fewer dots took up a larger area.

Moving patterns, where each dot followed its own path around the screen, were more of a challenge. But Brutus, at least, was not defeated. He seemed to be counting mobile dots even when the scientists tried to mislead him by moving the total coloured area of the dots at the same time.

It is not entirely surprising that bears should have a high degree of intelligence. They face a lot of challenges when trying to get food. They are, however, always alone, and so do not have the complex social systems that contribute to animal smarts. Perhaps, then, their maths skill developed because they cannot count on their friends for help.

1. What task did the scientists set for the three bears?
A.Distinguishing different dot patterns.B.Figuring out different colours of dots.
C.Putting the dots into differently coloured groups.D.Picking out the group with a larger number of acts.
2. For the bears, the task was easier when ______.
A.the coloured dots were moving slowlyB.the dot patterns were regular in shape
C.the dots followed a path on the screenD.more dots covered a larger coloured area
3. Why do the bears have high degree or intelligence?
A.They have to survive by themselves.B.They learn skills from other friends.
C.They feed on a diverse range of food.D.They have complex social networks.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Bears Taught to Distinguish ColoursB.Three Bears Learned How to Count
C.New Evidence of Bear Intelligence FoundD.The Smartest American Black Bear Brutus

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍光污染正在夺走我们的夜空,使得星星在我们眼前消失。

9 . In the endless sky, the unaided human eye should be able to perceive several thousand stars on a clear, dark night. Unfortunately, growing light pollution has impeded people from the nightly view.

New citizen-science-based research throws alarming light on the problem of “sky glow”-the diffuse illumination (漫射照明) of the night sky that is a form of light pollution. The data came from crowd-sourced observations collected from around the world as part of Globe at Night, a program developed by astronomer Connie Walker.

Light pollution has harmful effects on the practice of astronomy but also on human health and wildlife, since it disturbs the cycle from sunlight to starlight that biological systems have evolved alongside. Furthermore, the loss of visible stars is a great loss of human cultural heritage. Until relatively recently, humans throughout history had an impressive view of the starry night sky, and the effect of this nighty spectacle (壮观) is evident in ancient cultures.

Globe at Night has been gathering data on star visibility since 2006. Anyone can submit observations through the Globe at Night web application. Participants record which one best matches what they can see in the sky without any telescopes or other instruments.

Researchers find that the loss of visible stars indicates an increase in sky brightness of 9.6% per year while roughly 2% is measured by satellites. Existing satellites are not well suited to measuring sky glow as it appears to humans, because they can not detect wavelengths shorter than 500 nanometers (纳米). White LEDs, with shorter wavelengths under 500 nanometers, now are increasingly commonly used in outdoor lighting. But human eyes are more sensitive to these shorter wavelengths at nighttime. Space-based instruments do not measure light from windows, either. But these sources are significant contributors to sky glow us seen from the ground.

“The increase in sky glow over the past decade underlines the importance of redoubling our efforts and developing new strategies to protect dark skies,” said Walker. “The Globe at Night dataset is necessary in our ongoing evaluation of changes in sky glow, and we encourage whoever can to get involved to help protect the starry night sky.”

1. What does the underlined word “impeded” in the first paragraph mean?
A.separated.B.disabled.C.demanded.D.protected.
2. What does the loss of visible stars lead to?
A.Poorer human health.B.Fewer wildlife species.
C.More delicate biological systems.D.Less nightly culture elements of the sky.
3. What does the author stress in paragraph 5?
A.Crowd sourced data are invaluableB.Shorter wavelengths are hard to detect.
C.Satellites play a vital role.D.White LEDs are widely used.
4. What can be inferred from Walker’s words?
A.Their consistent efforts pay off.B.The dataset needs to be updated.
C.The sky glow has been over-emphasized.D.More participants are expected to join in.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了几个游客很少游览,但是确实令人印象深刻的国家公园。

10 . National parks like Yellowstone are popular destinations for both family vacations and adventure trips alike. But there are some places that simply don’t get the love that they deserve despite the fact that they are truly impressive.

Isle Royale National Park

Located in the heart of Lake Superior, Isle Royale requires a bit of work to reach, but it is well worth the effort. Access is permitted only via daily ferries, which is why larger parks like Yellowstone see more visitors in a day than Isle Royale sees in a year. Wildlife like wolves are frequently spotted by hikers along the park’s scenic trails.

Dry Tortugas National Park

Another island park, the Dry Tortugas can be found 68 miles to the southwest of the Florida Keys. Accessible only by boat or plane, this park is actually quite small, but it’s packed with history, abundant sea life, and amazing coral reefs. At the center of the park is Fort Jefferson, the largest masonry(砖石)structure in the Western Hemisphere.

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

Covering more than 13.2 million acres, Wrangell-St Elias National Park is the largest in the entire U.S. system. Remote and mostly undeveloped, this is a park that demands more from its visitors, after all there are just two roads that lead into it. But in return, it gives them a special connection with nature that simply isn’t found anywhere else.

Big Bend National Park

Travelers looking for a truly wild experience should have Big Bend National Park on their bucket lists. Big Bend is well known for its whitewater rafting camping, and hiking although during the summer months it can be intensely warm, keeping many visitors away.

1. What is the main reason for fewer visitors to Isle Royale National Park?
A.The terrible work.B.The dangerous wolves.
C.The remote location.D.The inconvenient transport.
2. Which park will you visit if you are interested in history?
A.Big Bend National Park.B.Isle Royale National Park.
C.Dry Tortugas National Park.D.Wrangell St. Elias National Park.
3. How is Wrangell-St. Elias National Park different from the other three parks?
A.With its wide roads.B.With its large area.
C.With its beautiful scenery.D.With its special visitors
