1 . A year back I received a full scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work had paid off. My mom had spent a lot in my attending a private high school, so I made sure to push myself: I volunteered, joined different clubs, and graduated with honors.
I was so excited to start a new life. I had totally packed two weeks and wanted to go to college at once before it was time to leave.
Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn’t like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the most difficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep.
I was so homesick (想家) and I didn’t know how to deal with my broken heart. To distract myself, I threw myself into my studies and I applied for a lot of jobs. In any remaining free time, I started forcing myself to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn’t think how lonely I felt.
Soon after, I began to limit food, and then I became worse. Finally, I went to see a doctor. When the doctor weighed me, I was crazy about the number of my weight. So I continued to lower my goal, and convinced that controlling this number was the solution to my homesickness. But when I was told that I had no choice but to spend time on my studies. I quickly started recovery in my mind.
How could I do? I told myself that school was what I was best at. I decided to get rid of my homesickness and took exercise actively. My first term of college had passed by at last and I had gotten straight A’s. That’s why I want to share my story—to help other students feel less lonely.

3 . Shark attacks in the screen are amazing. That’s because your actual chances of ever being attacked by a shark are mere one in 11.5 million. That’s roughly the same as your chances of winning an Oscar, which makes shark attack survivor, Mike Coots both incredibly unlucky and lucky: When Mike was 18, he lost his leg to a shark bite.
“I was attacked by a tiger shark in late October 1997. It was near my home on the island of Kauai — a typical fall morning with friends. The waves were really good, so nothing was stopping us.” That is until a large shark came right up under Mike and sank his teeth into Mike’s lower leg. As he tried to free himself, the shark bit down harder, shaking its head back and forth and tossing Mike around like a rag doll. Mike followed his instinct (本能): He struck the shark in the face, again and again until the shark released him. As Mike swam back into shore, he realized his lower right leg was gone. Mike’s friends rushed to his aid, and sent him to the hospital.
As soon as Mike was well, he did what many of us might consider unthinkable: he started riding the waves again, in fact, his first time back was near the site of his attack. But Mike was unshaken. Instead, he was curious — why was he attacked? His curiosity led him to research sharks, and Mike did learn something that would change his life: Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around.
His situation as a shark survivor empowered him to give sharks a voice, Mike says. He began working with the Hawaii state authorities (当局) to help pass a ban (禁令) on shark-derived products. “I partnered with other like-minded shark attack survivors and marine biologists, and we headed to Washington to urge (敦促) senators to create a nationwide bit! protecting sharks.”

I often go to a weekend school. So did many of my classmates. This seems popular among students. Good weekend schools have excellent teachers which help us improve our studies. Besides, we get to know students from another schools and learn about their campus of life.
So every coin has two sides. Our school work is already a heavy burden. Extra lesson often take up too much of our time. In addition, pay lots of attention to the extra lessons will affect their school subjects. We may also find ourselves very tired on Mondays to concentrate on the lessons in our own school. We should think seriously about this issue and make best use of our time.

6 . Jeremy grew up being active in sports. But he never thought about healthy eating until he found himself gaining weight several years after college.Last week, Jeremy hit a turning point when he found that he was too out of shape to play in a company football team. He decided to change his eating habits.
The first step Jeremy took toward healthy eating was to stop going to fast-food restaurants. Jeremy used to eat fast food as often as 4 times a week. To his surprise, he found that giving up fast food wasn't that difficult. Now, he says, “I don't even like it anymore.” When Jeremy does go out to eat,he tries to pick menu items that he knows are healthier. He orders salads and lower-fat sandwiches instead of hamburgers, and he drinks water instead of soda pop.“I try to order things that are already prepared the way I would like them to be prepared.”
Planning meals has been a key to Jeremy's success. It helps him avoid getting too hungry and eating fast food. Each week he plans what he will eat for each meal, and he shops for groceries (食品杂货) with his plan in mind.“It's a lot easier to make healthy choices when you're just planning ahead for it." Rather than cutting out certain foods, Jeremy sometimes includes his favourite foods in his eating plan. “That way I don't feel like I'm letting myself down by not sticking to my plan.”
Jeremy's friends and family noticed when he started eating healthier. They have helped him to make a habit of his healthy eating changes. “It made me feel pretty good, especially when people started making comments about the changes I was making,”he says. “You just get the positive energy.”

7 . I’m fond of EHS because English is my favorite subject. Though that sounds like the beginning paragraph of a suck-up(奉承者), it’s true. I love reading and writing, and while I may not be the best at it, certainly try my hardest. I intend to run for EHS Vice President, along with Jordan Pincus, because I feel that’s the best position for me in this Honor Society. I want to be able to share my own ideas on how to better improve EHS without being the absolute top, and what better position for that than Vice President.
I feel I’m qualified for this position because I’m full of great ideas and love English. I actually get English, and get along very well with others, which is very important for a board member. As a team, Jordan and I work very well together. Despite some disagreeing from time to time, the two of us actually end up getting more done at a faster pace, and because we spend most of our time together, communication issues are not a problem. Nothing is better for Vice Presidents to have than two people who are always together. On top of that, we are both devoted to anything we start, so EHS will never be ignored by either of us.
I will contribute all I can to EHS, whether in making sure meetings run smoothly or finding new projects/events for the club to do as a whole. I personally believe that I am fit for the job and will be able to perform tasks above the highest exceptions placed on me, which may sound a little prejudiced but I really think I'm fit for this! Thank you for reading this and taking me into consideration.

8 . When choosing Chinese universities, it is necessary for students to take both university conditions and self-qualifications into consideration.
Students’ graduation result
Students’ graduation result provided during the application is the key reference for the university to decide whether to admit or not. The stronger comprehensive strength and better reputation the university has, the stricter requirement for students’ graduation result will be.
Economy conditions
The cost of the study in China is relatively cheap, while daily expenses are not exactly the same in different areas. In Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other developed coastal cities, the daily expense can be relatively higher than that of inland. These cities’ living conditions are relatively better and entertainment and recreational facilities are richer. Therefore, when choosing universities, your economy factor needs to be taken into account.
China is a large country and the northern and southern China has many differences in climate and diet custom.

I am interested in your advertisement in the “Arkadia Morning Mail” for hostesses to be in charge of the welfare, entertainment and guiding of British guests in your holiday centre in Ruusulinna.
I am now a third-year student of English and History in the University of Gardenia but I am free from early June till late September. I have spent one year in London working in an English family and attending courses in English so I can speak this language fluently.
My father has been a guide and I have often followed him and also myself acted as a guide to English-speaking groups. My studies and experience have made me familiar with many interesting places in my country. I am sociable, really interested in people and, at the same time, I am the one with common sense on whom people can depend.
I put the address of the Manager of the local Tourist Information Office with the letter inside, who is ready to supply further information about me.
If you are interested in my application, I should be pleased with further information about these jobs, including the salary and general condition of employment.
Yours faithfully,
Polly Cosmos
