In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.
My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated (毕业) from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to give up college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.
Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted (收养) and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic — and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.
You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8. Our home was a complete zoo — a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream, either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester.
The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.
In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!
I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember: Little steps add up to big dreams.
1. Why did the author give up her education when she was young?(no more than 10 words)2. What prevented her going back to college full time?(no more than 10 words)
3. For what reason did the author insist on having a college education?(no more than 10 words)
4. The underlined word “occupied” in Paragraph 4 probably means ______.(no more than 5 words)
5. According to this passage, how would you deal with a challenge if you were faced with one?(no more than 10 words)
When someone gives you advice, listen without judgment, try to find value in what you’re hearing, and say: “Thank you”. This wise advice is easy to understand yet hard to practice. I’ll give you an example from my life when I totally blew it in terms of practising what I teach.
In my work I travel constantly. I always put off going to the airport until the last second. My wife, Lyda, was sitting next to me in the front seat. I was racing along and not paying much attention. Lyda cried out! “Look out! There is a red light up ahead.”
Being a trained behavioral science professional, who teaches others the value of encouraging advice, I naturally screamed at her: “I know there is a red light up ahead! Don’t you think I can see?” When we arrived at the airport, Lyda didn’t speak to me. I wondered why she seemed mad at me.
During the flight to New York, I did a cost-benefit analysis. I asked myself: “What was the cost of just listening when Lyda called out the warning? Zero.” I then reasoned: “What was the potential benefit? What could have been saved?” Several potential benefits came to mind, including her life, my life, and the lives of other people.
I landed in New York feeling ashamed of myself. I immediately called Lyda and told her my cost-benefit story. I convinced her: “The next time you help me with my driving, I am just going to say, ‘Thank you.”
A few months passed, and I had long forgotten the incident. Again, I was racing off to the airport, when Lyda cried out: “Look out for the red light!” I was embarrassed, and then shouted: “Thank you!”
I’m a long way from perfect, but I’m getting better. My suggestion is that when some people may tell you things like “Look out for the red light”, you should remember that there is possibly some potential benefit and say: “Thank you.”
1. According to the passage, what job does the author do? (no more than 5 words)2. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 1 probably means ______. (no more than 5 words)
3. Why didn’t the wife speak to the author when they got to the airport? (no more than 10 words)
4. What did the author do on his way to New York? (no more than 10 words)

4 . Capturing a moment in time isn’t just about securing a memory- it can help us appreciate our life more every day.
As a student,my campus has been my whole world. While it may seem limiting, studying with the same classmates and the same teachers in the same classroom every day has given me many opportunities to make great memories. I love the jokes told by my teachers in class, the songs my roommates and I sing together and cheerleaders’ loud cries at basketball games. Even the glow of the sunset with the mixture of purple and vivid red over the playground is mesmerizing.
And that is why I began to record my school life, and I’ve kept this habit for three years up until now. The first attempt, in the form of a diary, fell through as soon as my actual experiences became far more exciting than my words. So I bought a camera, with which I recorded every fascinating moment in my school life. Every weekend I transferred those photos to my phone and posted them on my social media. Without fail, I would find how joyful my school life was and how much progress I made, which in turn instilled(注入) more passion and purpose into the coming weeks.
As I progressed to senior high school, that camera gave way to camcorder(便携式摄像机) More and more videos drove me to learn video editing. Those valuable videos witnessed me joining the school choir(合唱团), training for sports meets, complaining about the burden of studying and having fun in the dormitory. They have become a labor of love and naturally my source of happiness.
When I look back on my diaries, photos and videos during this winter vacation, those fond memories came flooding back. Recording my school life lets me not only capture every precious moment in the course of my growth but also gives me the ability to observe and appreciate my surroundings and create joy in my life. It creates positive impact on my friends, showing them how wonderful life is and how it all depends on how much enthusiasm you show. So imagine how amazed I was when people said they felt youth and vitality through my work!

5. How do you capture the unforgettable moment in your school life? Please explain it. (no more than 20 words)
5 . Before I even started school, people felt that I was not going to amount to much. At the age of four, I started speech lessons because even I could not speak well enough to be understood.
First grade was a struggle. I not only had difficulty speaking, but I was expected to learn to read and I just couldn’t do it. My parents grew more and more frustrated. They bought books and offered great rewards if I could read one of them from start to finish to them. Well, with my speech problems and now my reading problems, I did not like to do reading and so refused to do it whenever possible.
Second grade was not much better. It was in the second grade that the teacher decided that I needed special education. I remember the days of taking the physical exams. However, after all that, they decided that I did not qualify for special education.
It was in third grade that a new school was built close to where I lived. I remember going there with my parents and helping to get the school ready so that we could transfer (转学). It was a happy day that we started school at Vandalia. However, things did not get better as my parent expected.
It was now time for fifth grade. Mrs. Wake field was my teacher, and if ever there was a teacher that deserved a gold star, it was her. She did not make me feel upset. Instead, she helped me in so many ways and built my self-confidence so that I actually did believe that I could do something special. And that is just what I did.
For the past 22 years, I have been a fifth grade teacher. Because of Mrs. Wake field’s influence in my life, I am now encouraging students who have had difficulties in their lives to believe that they can overcome and become someone. I have won a large number of awards but I know that all of them belong to one fifth grade teacher who believed in me and challenged me to be all that I could be.
I still have a class picture of her with her fifth grade class hanging on the wall of my office, encouraging other teachers to reach out to their students.

8 . I was the “I can’t” child-- the poster child for the word “can’t.” Whatever my mother told or asked me to do was always followed by my words, “I caaaan’t.” Very few tasks or goals that I set out to do were ever completed.
“I want you to read this article,” Mother began. “It’s about Marlo Thomas. She tells how a simple poem that she was forced to learn by her father changed her life. She went from saying ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can!’ According to this article, she was able to change her life, and her career, by learning the lessons in the poem.”
I thought it must be great to be Marlo! Beside her photo was the poem my mother had spoken of, a simple poem entitled “I Can.”
“I want you to memorize that poem,” Mother said firmly.
“Mamaaaaa,” I complained. “I can’t learn that poem. It’s too loooong.”
“It’s not too long and yes, you can learn it. I want you to know it perfectly by this time tomorrow.”
I dropped my shoulders, turned and made my way back to my bedroom with the magazine in my small right hand. With a heavy heart, I lay on my bed, fell back against the cotton and began my task.
“‘can’t’ is a word that is the enemy of ambition,” I began. I repeated the line. I repeated it again and again until it firmly stamped in my heart. “An enemy waiting to jump on your strength of will ...” I continued until the following evening, when I proudly recited the poem that has continued to be my motto. Ms. Thomas did not know me, but her story forever changed my life.
Saying “I can” helped me to survive the worst moments of my life. Saying “I can” helped me to do things I would otherwise have thought out of my reach. A simple poem learned at seven is a poem that will sustain me to seventy-seven. Maybe even longer.

9 . I was born in Merthyr Tydfil, a small town in Wales and an excellent place in which to grow up. It was probably the first town of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, where people had poured in to work in the new steel mills (工厂) and coal mines. But when I was small, all the great factories were closed and the town was one of the poorest in Europe, although that didn’t seem to be very important to me then. The ruins of the great mills were as romantic and imposing (壮观的) as those of any castle, the open mountains were within reach of any boy who could walk for fifteen minutes.
The first school I went to was a red-brick building on the edge of town, in the district of Georgetown. We had a splendid teacher and he taught us, about sixty small boys between the ages of seven and eleven, for the four years I was in the school. He was not only fond of words himself, but he could use them to tell jokes, to sing aloud, to explain things so vividly to us that we could see, almost, what he described. And he educated our senses, too, he made us look at everything so firmly, to know the textures (质地) of things with our skins, to hear the particular noises that exist in the world all around us. So real were our experiences that we began to look for the words necessary to recreate those experiences. That is how I began to write poetry.
I can't say that poetry was my greatest enthusiasm at that time. I loved boxing most of all. I knew all the great boxers of our town. When I was about ten years old I saw the fight I wrote about in The Ballad of Billy Rose. And years later, in Bristol, I saw the same man, old now, and very frail (体弱的). His name, however, was really Tommy Rose, and in the first version of my poem I called him that.
When I finished it, I read it aloud, and I knew that something was wrong. I was forced to change it to Billy, so that the balance was right, so that there was a satisfying agreement between the word "Ballad" and the word "Billy". Much the same thing happened when I wrote about his last great fight. I wanted my readers to hear for themselves the sounds of the fight with my words.
