This particular day began at seven in the morning in Casablanca(卡萨布兰卡). My friend Mike and I were going to visit Abdel, a young man we’d worked with on a volunteer project in Kenitra, an industrial city on the Moroccan(摩洛哥) coast. He’d been expecting us to arrive in Casablanca for a few days now, and since he had no telephone, he’d written down his address and name and told us to just show up-his mother and Sisters were always at home.

Apparently the address he had written down was hard for foreigners like us to understand.   When we got into the neighborhood, our taxi driver started asking directions. Eventually, with the help of a policeman, we were led to a house down a winding road. Our driver went to the door and inquired. He came back saying Abdel’s sister was in this house visiting friends and would come along to show us where they lived.

Soon a girl of about sixteen emerged from the house.   Surprisingly, she didn’t look like Abdel at all. Still I’d seen other families where children didn’t look alike, so I didn’t give it too much thought. She then brought us to a yard.   We waited in the yard while the sister went in and returned accompanied by her mother, sisters and brother-in-law, all of whom greeted us with cautious warmth. We were shown into the living room. The mother told us in broken French that Abdel was out, but would be home soon. We sat on low, cushioned seats, drinking sweet mint tea and eating sugar cookies, while the family members sat with us and made shy, polite conversation that frequently fell into uncomfortable silence.

An hour passed, more family members emerged from inner rooms. I was again struck by the fact that none of them looked a thing like our friend.

After another two hours had passed with no sign of Abdel, the family insisted on serving us a meal in their kitchen next door. “Soon,” was the only response I got when I inquired as to what time Abdel might come back.

Finally we heard the words we had been waiting for from the mother. “Please, Abdel is back in the living room.”

I took out the piece of paper Abdel had given me in Kenitra and showed it to the new Abdel.

4 . In the summer of 1960. Greenberg was playing baseball at Columbia University, when his eyes "steamed up". He had to lie down until the clouds went away. Back at school that fall, Greenberg had more episodes (插曲), but he didn't take it seriously. Yet, Garfunkel, his roommate, saw that he was having trouble.

On the first morning of finals, Garfunkel accompanied (陪同) Greenberg to take exams. Greenberg started writing at 9 a.m. By 10:30, he couldn't see a thing. He handed his blue book to the teacher and said. "I can't see. sir."

The teacher laughed. "I've heard some terrific excuses, but that's the best."

That winter, doctors operated on Greenberg's eyes, but with no effect. Greenberg was going blind. he was so downhearted that he refused to see anyone from college.

"I don't want to talk," Greenberg said.

"You must talk," said Garfunkel.

Garfunkel offered to be his reader. In September 1961, Greenberg returned to campus. Garfunkel took his time out to read textbooks to Greenberg, and Greenberg ended up scoring straight A's. Still, he was afraid of getting around alone.

Then, one afternoon, Greenberg and Garfunkel went to Manhattan. When it was time for Greenberg to go back to campus, Garfunkel said he had a meeting and couldn't accompany him. Then he walked off, leaving Greenberg alone. Greenberg stumbled through the rush-hour crowd. Anyway, he managed to arrive at the Columbia University stop. At the university's gates, someone knocked into him.

"Oops, excuse me, sir."

Greenberg knew the voice. It was Garfunkel's. Greenberg's first reaction was anger, but in the next second, he realized the truth. "Garfunkel, of course, had been with me the whole way," says Greenberg.

After graduation, Greenberg got his MBA from Columbia and a PhD from Harvard. It's all because of Arthur that Greenberg sings every blessing. He's really the luckiest man in the world.

You are one of my oldest and best friends, and although we have sometimes disagreed on scientific matters, I have always remained your friend. I was always willing to do anything for you. Lanyon, please will you do something for me now?

If you fail me tonight I am lost. Please cancel all your appointments and plans and, taking this letter with you, call a cab and go straight to my house. Poole, my butler, has his orders; you will find, him waiting your arrival. You are to break into my office, go in alone, open the cupboard marked “E” and take out the fourth drawer from the top with all its contents, just as they are. So that you will know you have the right drawer, I will tell you the contents. There will be some powders, a small glass container and a book. This drawer I beg of you to carry back with you to Cavendish Square exactly as it stands.

That's the first thing I need you to do; now for the second. If you start now, you should be back home long before midnight. Then at midnight, when no-one else is awake, a man will come to your door. He will mention my name. You must let him in yourself. Do not let your servants do this. You must then give him the drawer you brought back from my office. If you ask the man for an explanation, you will see that all these actions are important. Otherwise, I might die or become mad.

Please, please, do as I ask. If you do, all will be well. If you do not... well, I cannot think of the possibility. Just remember that if you do as I ask, all my troubles will roll away. Serve me, my dear Lanyon, and save Your friend, H. J.

P. S. It is possible the post office will not deliver this tonight and this letter will not be in your hands until tomorrow morning. In that case, dear Lanyon, please do as I ask when it shall be most convenient for you in the course of the day; and once more expect my messenger at midnight. It may then already be too late; and if that night passes without event, you will know that you have seen the last of Henry Jekyll.

6 . I come from a broken family that many would consider dysfunctional (失衡) at the very least: marriage, divorces, etc. After we grew up, my three siblings and I could go years _______ speaking. And that is where this story _______.

My sister Jeanne and I were born only 14 months _______, but by the time we were teenagers we had lost _______. By age 19, I had moved away from our home in Wisconsin to live on my father’s horse farm in Virginia. We lived separate lives in separate states and our connection _______ ended.

Fast-forward about five years, I was 24 and on a _______ with my fiancé (未婚夫) to New York City, a place I had never been to.

During a day of sightseeing, we were crossing a very _______street loaded with people. I was on the point of laughing at something my fiancé said _______ I heard my name yelled from somewhere around me: “Cheryl!” I _______in my steps in the middle of the road. Tears __________ in my eyes. I knew without a doubt that it was my sister Jeanne. I yelled __________ before even turning to look. “Jeanne?” It was her.

Mr. Taylor was fond of hiking, this time in particular, for it was the first time for him to hike with his two sons, Harry and Joel. Joel liked reading books about explorers and Harry joined the hiking club in his school this term. “It will be an unforgettable experience, definitely.” he whispered to himself, unconsciously a smile spreading over his face.

Harry and Joel, however, argued for the first three miles of their hiking trip. Harry accused Joel of wearing smelly old shoes. Joel blamed Harry for using all of the bug spray (喷雾防虫剂). Harry told Joel he smelled terrible. Joel called Harry a coward (懦夫).

“Will the two of you just quiet down and enjoy our hike together?” their father said. “You’re missing all of the beautiful scenery!”

It was true. Neither Joel nor Harry had taken notice of the bear their father had spied at the start of their trip. They hadn’t looked up at the eagle he pointed out overhead. Worst of all, they hadn’t paid any attention to the turns and twists along the way while they continued their argument.

“Joel threw a stick at me!” Harry screamed. “That’s not true!” Joel shouted back.

Mr. Taylor could no longer contain his anger. “And both of you need to stop arguing!” he erupted. As he turned to face them, his left foot caught on a root. He slipped backward and down muddy bank, falling into the river that ran alongside the path.

Harry and Joel raced to their father’s assistance. They helped him up out of the water, and then dragged his wet backpack up onto land.

Fortunately, their wet-through father found himself just slightly injured.

But his glasses came off when he fell in the water.

“Just calm down.” Mr. Taylor shouted, “Without my glasses, we need to work together to find our way.

8 . My mother died at the age of thirty-six, leaving me aged seven. I was _________ mainly by relatives when my father remarried. By my early twenties, I had learned that my mother, who had polio (小儿麻痹症) as a young child, had not been _________ to live past her early twenties.

After the tough upbringing I've had, I began to _________ why she chose to have children when she knew she would die _________. Finally, from my aunt, I got a simple answer: My mother had always _________ the doctors’ prediction. She had done so well with her _________ issues that she thought she would live long enough to raise me.

I got a little relieved. _________ I still felt deeply _________ that my mother had left me in such a _________ situation. And then the ____________ came.

9 . "She is a pretty girl, but I don't know why George stays friendly with her." This is what Maria Osborne, George's sister, said to her younger sister, Jane, about Amelia.

"I can't agree more." Jane said.

One day Dobbin came to the Osborne house to visit George, but he was not at home.

"You are at the wrong house," laughed Maria, and pointed to the Sedley's house on the other side of the street. "That's where he is."

Dobbin smiled strangely and went away. He knew that George had not been there. Amelia was there alone, hoping that George would come to visit her. Day after day, she waited. Day after day, he didn't come. He was busy playing billiards with his friends in the army.

A lot of people thought that the army would soon join in the war against Napoleon. and Amelia was worried that her George would have to go and fight. Perhaps，he would be injured or killed！Then the war in Europe ended，and Amelia were very happy. However，George told her that he had to travel to some other parts of England with his troops. While he was away，he sometimes wrote her a short note. She wrote him very long letters every day.

George was tired of reading these long letters and sometimes used them to light his cigars. His friends Stubble and Spooney wondered who was sending all those long letters to Captain Osborne，but he would not tell them. Dobbin heard Stubble and Spooney speaking about it one day.

“She's probably an actress or singer and just wants his money，"said Spooney.

“Miss Sedley is one of the nicest young women that ever lived." said Dobbin，annoyed. "and Lieutenant Osborne has been engaged（订婚）to her for a long time. ”

Soon，everybody in the army knew about it，and George was angry with Dobbin. Then he remembered that Dobbin often helped him by giving him money. He did not want to lose such a good friend. Dobbin told him that he should write to Amelia and try to make her happier. The next day George decided to go to London and visit Amelia. He borrowed some money from Dobbin，so that he could buy her a present. When he arrived in London，he saw a lovely shirt in a shop and bought it for himself. He had no money left to buy a present for Amelia.

“Never mind，”he said to himself. “She doesn't care about presents. She just wants to see me. ”

She was，indeed，very happy to see him，and admired his new shirt. He talked to her about his plans to retire from the army because the war in Europe had ended and was going to live somewhere in the country with her. She was very happy.

“I will take you to visit your sisters-in-law，"said George. “I have some important business in the city，but I will be back in time for dinner. ”

George took her to the Osborne house，and then he went into the city and played billiards with his friends. He was late for dinner.

After dinner, his father talked to him about his plans. He wanted him to stop gambling and playing billiards with his friends, and George promised that he would.

"Can't you find another girl to marry?" asked Mr. Osborne suddenly.

"But she loves me, and you arranged it many years ago with Mr. Sedley,"replied George.

"Yes, I know. Sedley was my friend once and helped me in business. Now his business does not look good. I think he has lost a lot of money. I don't want a poor man's daughter in my family!"

George was not upset to hear this, and he did not tell Amelia what his father had said. He made Amelia very happy, and that night she wrote him another long letter. He read it and sighed.

"Poor Amelia,"he said. "She loves me so much! This wine has given me a headache!"

10 . When and why did you start running?

It was March 2017. My family had gone through a terrible experience. My nephew Peter had his arms and legs cut to save his life from the after-effects of meningitis(脑膜炎).    1    . I needed to get fit and healthy for my family, to become a role model for them. Peter inspires me to live life to the full: he doesn’t let his disability get in his way!

I'm proud of all the races I’ve done. I never thought I'd be able to call myself a runner. I now regularly race and love bringing home medals for my daughters to be inspired by.    2    !

    3     .We started a campaign called Hope 4 Peter and support has been amazing: our local community helped raise ₤240k for prosthetic legs(假肢)and physiotherapy. We’ve had huge support from Meningitis Now and Time is Precious too, and I’ll be raising money for them, but also pushing Peter around the full course.    4     .

I’ve suffered with mental health problems and running gives me a clear head and removes negative (消极的)thoughts and stress.    5    . We should be so grateful for our bodies and what amazing things they can do!
