1 . When my daughter was five, she     1    (give) a piano as a birthday present. With great     2    (excite), she began learning it.     3    , when she was no longer curious, she become sick of it.

When her first teacher left, my friend introduced me     4     an American teacher whose way of teaching was completely American. After practicing, she would give my daughter some good comments, and then point out     5     should be improved. Every time she came, instead of beginning the lesson right away, she would first play some music. After some time, my daughter became fond of her lessons. Surprisingly, my daughter said to me one day, “Mom, I was lucky that you didn’t give up my piano lessons.     8    (learn) it is like climbing a mountain. But if you stop, you’ll never take one more step.” That was the very thing I wanted to teach her.

2 . In my primary school years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons. The teacher asked me to help her, and     1     was obvious that she expected a lot from me. But as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to avoid her so as to get more time to enjoy     2    ( I ).

One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, “Could you please explain this     3     me? I want very much to do     4     (well) this time.” I started explaining, and finished in a hurry.     5     (pretend) not to notice her still-confused eyes, I ran off quickly. Not surprisingly, she again     6     (do) very badly in the exam. And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her     7     (die). No one knew about the little task I failed     8    (fulfill), but I couldn’t forgive myself. I simply couldn’t forget her eyes,     9     seem to be asking, “Why didn’t you do a little more to help me?”

It was the very starting point of my life, for I began to understand the word “responsibility” and to learn to always do my duties     10     (faithful) and devotedly.

3 . Communicating with the old can be challenging,     1     (especial) when considering the fact that their abilities are failing.

First of all, you are     2     (suppose) to respect the old’s thoughts, backgrounds and life experience. Do not correct their opinions even when you can’t reach any       3    (agree). And when old people are talking, listen     4    (careful). Let them finish because letting them express their thoughts and emotions     5    (be) important.

When you’re together with them, try to know if they would like     6    (chat) or be quiet. And when you feel they want to be quiet, just be there, because       7    (spend) time with them is as important as talking to them or cheering them up.

As communication with old people can be difficult, it is         8    (importance) to be always patient. When you are explaining something     9     them, you should remain patient when they ask you to repeat yourself. Try using gestures while you talk with them, or write down what you want to say when     10    is necessary.

4 . Itzhak Perlman, a famous violinist, came on stage to give a concert. He was stricken with polio（小儿麻痹症）as a child, so getting on stage is no small     1     (achieve).

The audience sat quietly while he made his way across the stage     2     his chair and began his play. But this time,     3     went wrong. Just as he finished the first part, one of the strings on his violin     4    (break). We thought that he would have to stop the concert. But he didn’t.     5    , he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin again.

5 .         In the toys section, I noticed a small boy of about five years old,     1    (press) a doll against his chest. He kept on touching the hair of the doll and looked very sad. I wondered who he wanted to give the doll     2    . So I walked towards him and asked him all about it.
       “It is the doll    3     my sister loved most and wanted so much for this Christmas. She was so sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her.”
        I told him not to worry. However, he     4     (reply) sadly, “No, Santa Claus cannot bring it to     5     she is now. I’ll have to give the doll to my mother so that she can give it to her when she goes there.”

6 . I climbed Kilimanjaro with Lava Expeditions during the rainy season.

I    1    (fly) to Nairobi in Kenya and spent several days there. At my hotel in Nairobi I met the rest of the group with     2     I would spend the next week. We all traveled on the bus together for     3     8-hour journey into Tanzania and then Arusha, a quiet town.

After we arrived at our hotel in Arusha, we had dinner and a few drinks. Then we     4    (introduce) to more members including Taddeus Minja, the main guide, who was very     5    (experience) --- climbing Kilimanjaro runs through the generations of     6    (he) family.

The next day the Lava Expeditions members checked if we had the correct and enough clothing for our expedition on Kilimanjaro. Only one person needed to bring more clothes. After that we set off,    7    (walk) in the rain through the beauty of the rainforest, all the way to the first camp. I was happy the next few days as the view was so wonderful and changed every day. I suffered a little during the trip and I felt so tired. But the members of Lava Expeditions provided me     8     lots of encouragement, which was one of the best     9    (memory). Finally we reached the top of Kilimanjaro in bright blue skies.

I felt excited about climbing Kilimanjaro and the feeling didn’t change during my trip. The fellow members of Lava Expeditions looked after me so well that I was     10    (deep) thankful for their help.

7 . Do you make friends    1    (easy)? Do a wall-sit test and you’ll find out.
     Researchers at the University of Oxford did     2    study with 101 participants aged between 18 and 34. Participants first     3    (fill) out questionnaires about their social lives, and they were then asked     4    (press) against a wall with their     5    (knee) at right angles(直角) for as long as they could,     6    can be really painful.
     The results showed that the longer participants held the position, the bigger     7    outer network—or distant friends they contacted once or twice a month—was. 8 . Last Friday, my friend David called me and invited me and our friend Tom to a party in his university. Tom and I are in    1    same class. We both wanted to go to the party, but there was a problem--we’d have a final exam on the           2    (come) Monday.

   “Don’t worry. We can come back on Sunday and won’t miss the exam,” really    3    (want) to go to the party, Tom said. So I decided to go    4    him.

   The party was great and we    5    (true) enjoyed ourselves there. However, we stayed up late on Saturday night and slept all day on Sunday and didn’t make it back to our university until Monday morning. We missed the exam.
